S. J. RES. 165
Joint Resolution authorizing and requesting the President to proclaim 1983 as the “Year of the Bible.”

Whereas the Bible, the Word of God, has made a unique contribution in shaping the United States as a distinctive and blessed nation and people;

Whereas deeply held religious convictions springing from the Holy Scriptures led to the early settlement of our Nation;

Whereas Biblical teachings inspired concepts of civil government that are contained in our Declaration of Independence and the constitution of the United States;

Whereas many of our great national leaders—among them Presidents Washington, Jackson, Lincoln, and Wilson—paid tribute to the surpassing influence of the Bible in our country's development, as the words of President Jackson that the Bible is “the rock on which our Republic rests”;

Whereas the history of our Nation clearly illustrates the value of voluntarily applying the teachings of the Scriptures in the lives of individuals, families, and societies;

Whereas this Nation now faces great challenges that will test this Nation as it has never been tested before; and

Whereas that renewing our knowledge of and faith in God through Holy Scripture can strengthen us as a nation and a people: Now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled , That the President is authorized and requested to designate 1983 as a national “Year of the Bible” in recognition of both the formative influence the Bible has been for our Nation, and our national need to study and apply the teachings of the Holy Scriptures.

Approved October 4, 1982. Passed by the President
1 U.S. Cong. & Adm. News '82-29 96 Stat. 1211

As I reflect back onto this resolution that was passed I find it difficult as a follower of Gods Word to not feel insulted by the vanity on display. Although the truth of the resolution and its contents are in accord with our history as a nation it is the body that offers up this resolution in which my distaste lays.

It is true that the Bible is the Word of God given to mankind and through it many resolve deeply held convictions which in turn inspired good men and women to establish a nation of Liberties described therein. It is also certain that many of our nations founding leaders recognized the value of Gods Word and honored it by using it to strengthen the civil laws that govern our great land. Also recognizing that one cannot be forced to Honor Gods Word but must do so willingly from their own volition and that freedom was one of the First recognized in our Constitution. This resolution in the face of great challenges ahead calls for a renewal of our knowledge of and faith in God through the Holy Scriptures. An inspiring and uplifting goal to be achieved certainly but what has occurred since this resolution concerning the desired goal? Was this resolution an attempt to appease a people seeing their Liberties violated or a real attempt to stop the tide of revisionists modernists historians rising up? From my perspective I say the former more than the later, here is why.

Gods Word (the Bible) values life and champions righteous judgment so if the Senate really wanted to Honor the Bible it too would be a champion of life, yet we have abortion as a sacred cow legislatively for most in the Senate. How about the efforts of Justice Roy Moore who did try to honor Gods Word in the setting of life and law, he was forced out by those who thought he violated our nations laws over Gods Law. Shall I even mention the highly valued respect of life they showed towards Terri Schievo! Now I know some may say that it was the court system that let her die. I contend that it is the duty of the Senate to approve of judicial nominations especially of the Appellate and Supreme courts. Wouldn’t it then be at least prudent to confirm persons to those positions who at least have a knowledge of the contents of the Bible, I say yes. Before any one goes off saying, “separation of church and state, separation of church and state” remember the contents and purpose of S. J. Resolution 165 “Whereas that renewing our knowledge of and faith in God through Holy Scripture can strengthen us as a nation and a people: Now, therefore, be it ------- our national need to study and apply the teachings of the Holy Scriptures.”

So was the above Resolution a real effort on the part of the Senate to honor Gods Word? or just an effort to placate a growing discontented people concerning the direction of destruction of life the Senate was allowing us to trod? I believe within my core being that it was an attempt to pacify the people so they could continue on their way towards oppression of life. With all of the body of evidence concerning the destruction of life sanctioned by our Senate surrounding this nation even after this Resolution how could I a follower of Gods Word come to any other conclusion!

Here is my proposed resolution to the Senates vain attempt at trying to seem concerned with what it is Gods Word is and has done for this nation. As a people take this resolution personally to heart read Gods Word renew your knowledge and Faith in God through those scriptures study and apply the teachings and hold those responsible for the destruction of Life, accountable.
