No hugs. No high fives. And certainly no kicks to the groin, the incident which kicked off this new policy.

Principal Catherine Williams sent out a letter earlier in the week telling parents recent behavior has seriously impacted the safety and learning at the school.

"Observed behaviors of concern recently exhibited include kicking others in the groin area, grabbing and touching of others in personal areas, hugging and horseplay. Physical contact is prohibited to keep all students safe in the learning environment," Williams wrote.

They should get rid of pencils and pens, too. Someone could get stabbed.

I looked at that thing to see where it was. Oh, surprise surprise. In the biggest welfare & worst cities in America belt along I-95.

I'm not surprised. Not surprised one bit.

To be fair, "zero-tolerance" policies absolve teachers and administrators from having to make decisions using common sense.

It also protects them from litigious parents whose little darlins are absolutely perfect and just couldn't be the playground bully.

Not sayin' its right, just sayin'

What is it with kids and touching each other's privates and behinds these days? A lot of you know I teach preschool, and we had a serious problem last year with 2 boys that kept grabbing other kids, and this year there's lots of behind smacking. ::eyeroll:: They need to knock it off. The time has come to start issuing serious punishments for that sort of behavior. It just isn't appropriate. Hugs are one thing, but some things, just NO WAY.

I'd like to point you to Connecticut Style zero-tolerance. ( Trust me. I've lived here my entire life. )

It's called: Officers of the law being called in to resolve squabbles between two kids. Zero tolerance here - is never a good thing. Especially along I-95. While the cop's messing around with a couple of kids fighting over a candy bar - someone's getting stabbed or shot somewhere else in town.

It should be more like:

"Mr [insert kids last name] - if your kid doesn't shape up - I'd like to inform you that school attendance is mandatory, and your child's attendance at this public school is a privilege. If you refuse to control your child, teach [him/her] manners, you will need to pay $XXXX.00 / year for private schooling. So - it's your choice. Control your kid, or he's out of here - and you're footing the bill. Have a nice day."

It's called: PARENTS. There's very few of them today.

Having gone to school in CT for 8+ years now, I can honestly say that this does not surprise me.

EVERYTHING in CT is less personal.

People are not very friendly to strangers, and even among friends there is a general diminished "warmth" that I was used to in NJ.

Granted, I have made INCREDIBLE friends up here that have lived in CT all their lives, so I am speaking in completely general terms, but social interactions up here are definitely...

... different.

As far as the school's policy? Its a crap policy. Inappropriate actions need to be dealt with in a BETTER fashion than this! I can imagine these kids growing up and freaking out the first time someone hugs them!

1984 has arrived.

My elementary school had a similar rule...back in the late '70s. Somehow, we survived.

Well.....I'm okay with the 'no groin kicking' thing. I'm just sayin'....

Why is banning all forms of touching a sensible response to a groin kick? It's not like kicking people in the groin was not against the rules already.
