View Full Version : More people buying guns or something else?

Has anyone tried purchasing a handgun recently?
I live in a small town, and recently purchased a home defense weapon. I had to go to three different dealers in the area. All three dealers said they were experiencing difficulty getting weapons and ammo for their customers. I was looking for a particular model 45 ACP and they all said that they had placed orders but the manufacturer would not tell them when to expect delivery.
My daughter even tried to find me some ammo at the Army's post exchange. The clerk told her that they did not expect to have any for another six months.
Is this because the demand has increased because of many people (like me) who fear future restrictions or is there something more sinister going on?
Your opinions?

it is increased demand. plain and simple. the factories cannot keep up. remember that much of thier custom is also military and LE and those organization get first dibs. so increasing production is not always possible at least not in meaningful numbers. so demand increased and the supply was stable and cannot be ramped up much in my opinion.

How long before financial institutions that have received “bail out” money will no longer grant loans to gun or munitions manufactures?
How long before banks will no longer offer services to gun retailers?
There are many ways to take our guns away, and the back-door approach would be the easiest. Just ask the former CEO of GM or try to buy a black car in California.

I do think the demand is higher on the South, and this would make perfect sense seeing as how there are more people right of center down here and they are the ones fearing a leftist regime.
One interesting note I read the other day in Mark Steyn's book "America Alone", studies are showing the more conservative states reproduction rates are higher than the liberal states. Could this save our country?

Liberals probably get pregnant at the same rates, but seem to have no qualms about abortion.

I was doing some reading this weekend about the guns going south issue and the way it is being touted as a just reason for the reinstatement of the AWB.
I read in one place that an estimated 10 million assault weapons have been sold in the US since President Obama was elected.
Also read that a total of just over 7 thousand assault weapons captured in raids in Mexico last year have been traced back to America.
The Big Lies will be used to take guns away from millions of lawful owners because of a few hundred criminals who would never obey a renewed AWB in the first place.

now THAT'S funny...
Here in Texas "low on ammo" is one drawer anywhere in the house with less than two boxes of shells... God I love this state.
"Castle Law" was updated here too... guns in the truck are perfectly legal now. Yeah baby.
Never heard of anyone getting carjacked in small towns across the south. It's hard for a carjacker to drive with a round from a .45 ACP Hardballer stuck in his chest.

My husband and I went looking for a gun for me this weekend (he has 3, none of these I am really comfortable shooting)
We went to Cabella's and I found a sweet Glock M 32 (Holds 13 rounds)that fit perfectly in my hand. We spent quite a bit of time with the sales person..then went looking for ammo (mine takes a sig 357 round) and were surprised to see the shelves empty of a lot of different types of ammo including mine. We asked him about it and he said they have had a hard time keeping certain caliber shots on the shelf. The 22 rounds and shotgun shells are available, but anything with a kick for a handgun is sparse.
I found this rather telling of what is to come. I think people are waking up. We live up in the Pacific Northwest..so it's definately not a south thing.
Also he said that he had just sold the last Ruger 100 they had in stock but a lot of others were selling fast. Business has been very good.

Here in CT - some democrat staffer, former asst. to the Mayor of Hartford, CT - was convicted for ... shooting a burglar who broke into his house.
Wish I lived in Texas too. Here in CT the criminal is above the victim - kill a man, and you get a nice comfy "hotel room" with cable TV, an exercise room, 3 square meals a day, and your own personal video game. Good deal huh. ( Hah, we've been looking. Our horses would be pleased to live over in Texas - and heck, there's much more land to be had over there too. Oh ... not to mention, the neighbor wouldn't be having a heart attack over us shooting targets with a .22 out back. )
---
Where I live - the local shop is having huge sales - they say they'd have even more if they could sell cheaper weapons.
Sales are up. Insecurity is up. Tyranny is on the rise. We're NRA members too.
:frown:
We've got kids in the family ... including a couple jokers who point the air rifle at people ... so, needless to say we don't have any in the house. ( Though our neighbor has enough rifles to outfit his own personal militia :D )

Once again, it comes down to agenda.
The article you read would like you to believe that 10 million assault weapons have been purchased since the innaguration, when in fact:
Definitions
A genuine assault weapon, as opposed to a legal definition, is a hand-held, selective fire weapon, which means it's capable of firing in either an automatic or a semiautomatic mode depending on the position of a selector switch. These kinds of weapons are heavily regulated by the National Firearms Act of 1934 and are further regulated in some states.
The AR-15, which is the civiian variant of the M-16, will only fire one bullet at a time. Therefore, it is not an assault weapon. Matter of fact, because of its small bullet, it is less capable that a decent quality hunting rifle that you can buy at any sporting good store like Bass Pro Shops or Gander Mountain.
I doubt that there been 10 million guns of all types sold since November.

There are plenty of guns for sale down here and I know of a couple of shops that have plenty of 1911's and other .45 cal handguns for sale. Also, it looks like both Walley Worlds received a shipment of ammo, which is going fast and at least one grocery store sells all kinds of ammo and just received a shipment, mainly pistol and .22 and shotgun ammo. Looks like they got a case of Wolf .30 cal carbine in that I may checkout but have seen mixed reviews/comments on the steel cased ammo in the M1 Carbine. Heck, I even found a brand new Springfield M1A Scout in one of the pawn shops that also sells new weapons. :)

Nothing wrong with a pink weapon. My mosquito is pink! I think a criminal would be more embarrassed to be shot by a pink weapon fired by a woman than a mean looking black weapon fired by a big burly man. Couldn't you see him telling his gang banging buddies about it?

Her birthday or Obama's impeachment! A 9mm would be ideal for her, she says she likes the look of my 1911 but it made her nervous after I let her fire it. She hasn't shot that .38 yet but I have a feeling it may make her nervous at first.

I think they're just standard custom grips. They were already on the pistol when she bought it, it doesn't have all the cool high speed stuff on it....yet. :D I'll have to post some pics of it on here.

Some libs live in this namby pamby world where harsh realities don't exist, such as criminals will have guns regardless of whatever gun control law is in place.
I think some believe you should sit down and talk to thugs instead of arming yourself and sending them to their makers.

Yep, most places here have decent ammo prices but the stuff goes quick. A couple of shops are mighty proud of their weapons and ammo so, I've put them on the "Bad Santa List." :) I'm thinking of picking up a box of the Wolf .30 cal at the grocer for my carbine and trying out. If it does ok then I may pick up the rest he has for range shooting at our new range that doesn't let you pickup your brass.

Yeah it does go fast, .223 and .308 was selling like hot cakes at that gun show. I have some Wolf .223, I ran a couple of mags through my AR-15 and it wasn't too bad. A little on the dirty side when I went to clean my weapon but other than that it did pretty good. I use it and Magtech just to just burn up rounds and save my Lake City 5.56 for special occasions. ;)

Yes, slaes of guns and ammo are up- three companies which actually saw a profit in the last quarter of 2008- Sturm-Ruger; Cabelas, and WalMart.
Ammo is selling like crazy most places, everybody trying to beat the price increase/controls they think will follow implementation of the proposal to make all ammo microchiped and traceable.
Which, BTW, is a ludicrous idea- for starters, the technology to do this does not even exist.

That stuff smells and looks like they cut their gun powder with horse manure, the lacquer on the cases can melt and gum up your chamber, steel cases are harder on extractors, and I have heard that some people have found their ammo to be slightly corrosive.
Go with the brass cased Aguilla (SP) .30 carbine ammo, you can find it cheap at the CMP if you are willing to wait or you can find it on the internet.

On the firearms side of the equation demand is certainly up and causing some shortages and price increases. I do think gun makers are trying to increase production to meet that demand but most have been unwilling to make large capital investments into machinery as the political situation is somewhat bleak and this demand surge is probably temporary.
As for the ammo I think the situation is more complex and not nearly as likely to resolve itself after the temporary demand surge goes away. First off people are definitely worried about politics and stocking up to beat any threat. Also CC seems to be gaining in popularity even more given the bleak economy and more people outside the gun culture are buying firearms and ammo these days. There may be some increased demand due to the WOT but I doubt it has a lot of effect on commercial supply given the volume of small arms ammo that Lake City can pump out per day. The number one issue I see that has ammo prices so high is the increased demand from LE due to increasing militarization of police departments. With the increasing use of .223 patrol rifles and more and more forces adding on SWAT elements the demand for practice and training ammo is huge.

Nothing wrong with Wolf if your gun can handle it. My 1911 will feed .45 all day long but the 1927, you'll get about 10 shots before TINK no more extractor for you.. :((
And the AK will feed all you can give it, grin and ask for more.
Some can handle the steel cases and some cannot. As long as you keep your stuff clean the corrosiveness isnt an issue.
As for the topic of this thread... as much as I like seeing my fellow citizens exercising their rights I'm kinda ready for all this to blow over so I can go back to buying ammo at will again. :))

The corrosinveness comes into play when an unsuspecting person believes what is written on the box and doesn't clean their firearm correctly.
I shot a box of Wolf through my H&K USP without any failures. I just hated how dirty it was and the acrid smoke that hung around after you fired a round, it would burn my eyes and nose it was so bad.

You guys have done far more to limit shooting than Obama could ever hope to accomplish.

I believe it is demand. Prices on guns have jumped a bunch as well.
One of my coffee klatch buddies told me he spent some time researching the issue and found that the overall demand is up ten fold. He said some ammunition manufacturers have gone to triple shifts and still cannot keep up with demand. Furthermore, some wealthy people (hopefully not liberal anti-gun fanatics) will go (with a crew) to the big stores like WalMart, Fred Meyer and Sportsman's Warehouse, etc., on shipment day and buy them out. Civilian demand is currently about five times greater than the military demand.
I cannot verify any of this, but it makes sense.

I went to Bass Pro Shop on Saturday and walked out with my new Taurus 45. No problem getting anything for it there.

Nothing wrong with a pink weapon. My mosquito is pink! I think a criminal would be more embarrassed to be shot by a pink weapon fired by a woman than a mean looking black weapon fired by a big burly man. Couldn't you see him telling his gang banging buddies about it?
"Dude, this crazy chick shot me with a PINK gun! She was wearing her hair in pig tails and had on a pink shirt!" :))
If she had used a "real" gun, he wouldn't be telling that embarrassing story... or any other story... to his pals. ;)

Friends don't let friends shot Wolf ammo!
It does smell funky. The kind I have has a some kind of other coat on the casings, however what you say about the steel casings makes a lot of sense and I'm thinking I may have to stop running it through my AR15.

Check this website out if you haven't already, they have good ammo and has M1 Carbine ammo or did have anyhow. It's a little higher than CMP but his shipment is fast.

A little higher? Its a whole lot higher!
80-90 cents per round before shipping vs. 36 cents a round delivered.

I use them because they're one of the few places I can find M2 ball, apparently I won't be getting my ammo from CMP for a few months.

We shall remember that when one of Wolfs fine standards of overloading helps the slide on your .45 off the frame.

Why? For what they cost each, you could buy two Mini 14s and have money left over for ammo.

I heard it's the demand here.
Have not shopped myself. Just have a S&W .40 semi-auto.
Would like to get a rifle again - probably a 7mm mag.. And would like 1 shotgun.
I understand that full auto firearms are fine to acquire if registered - up to a certain size that is. That's not on my shopping list though.

I'm about ready to start giving my leftover Wolf ammo away after reading what everyone is saying about it on here!
I sure don't want to do any damage to my rifles, ofcourse the only one I have it for is my AR15.

Wolf ammo is crap. Have heard too many stories about it, and have fired it and actually noticed the difference in the GUNK & buildup it leaves, and this was in a DPMS Panther AR-15 that only had 50 rounds through it.

I read S&W's 10Q for quarter ended 1/31/09, their backlog was $123 million.

It's worse than firing blanks as far as carbon and gunk, sounds of things blanks are less damaging too to a rifle too.

It's demand based on fear of losing certain 2nd A rights, nothing more. And no, there's nothing sinister going on. You might just have to order one and wait. There's no problem here in Texas getting the gun (basically) you want, the problem is ammo. I just keep ordering it online and that way I always have some coming in.
