The compensatory picks have been handed out and we now have a draft order for all seven rounds. http://www.nfl.com/draft/story?id=09000d5d80eef17e&template=without-video-with-comments&confirm=true
As a Lions fan, I see that they have 5 of the first 82 picks. Hope that without Matt Millen running things that they have a good draft day. I don't know how compensatory picks get determined or handed out but it's interesting that new England got three of them a 3rd, 5th, and 6th round pick. This year KC gets the last pick in the draft. Hope somehow the Lions can trade the #1 pick, because personally I don't think anyone in this draft class is worth the money that a #1 overall pick gets. Please some trade us for this pick. Al Davis likes to make noise how about he give us the 7th and the 40th pick for the #1 overall pick.

The Lions and Bengals have the most picks this year, and they both need them.

Did you hear they were considering moving the draft up to February? I'm assuming that would be so teams would know who they had drafted when they started making Free Agency decisions...
I think that would force a lot of Pro Days, the combine, and other scouting events into a very small window.

I read that Stafford scored extremely high on the wonderlic. He certainly has all of the physical tools to succeed. So with the combination of a very high wonderlic, and great arm, I am not sure the Lions can pass him up.

50 is a perfect score...Stafford scored a 38
Mark Sanchez scored a 28
Josh Freeman scored a 27
But just a reminder, Alex Smith scored a 40 ;)

Smith doesnt have anywhere near the physical ability of Stafford though. The wonderlic certainly isnt the end all be all by any means, but I think it certainly helps to have a QB with some intelligence.

Steeler got boned on their comp. pick. A 5th rounder for a high-priced, All-Pro, Probowler? Get away from me.

Seems kind of low, but I havent really looked to see what other players were used to decide picks for other teams.

I was just reading about that. Apparently there's a rule that the max you can get for a departing FA over 30 is a 5th rounder. It's in the compensation rules.

Yep. Or the Steelers could have given him the money he deserved last year.

It would make sense for having picks in house for OTAs
I think the first change they should make is a rookie sal cap
I do not see the union allowing the draft to happen before FA as that would cut the wages for already existing players in some cases

7.8M for a 30+ YO guard doesn't even remotely fit into the Steelers' MO.

True, but the comment was more towards smarcos talking about "compensation" for him leaving.

Yeah paid him the money he deserved? I think we did alright without him last year, don't you? Really though it could be worse, we could pay no one money and then sign headcases to try and get fans in the stands like a certain Northeastern team.

Sounds a hell of a lot like age discrimination to me. Assigning a value to someone based on age? WOW!

Age discrimination in an athletic league? The hell you say!

Hey...I have a gripe with it too. We just lost the heart of our defense (Dawkins) and there's a decent chance the best we'll get is a 7th for it.

Nice, I address your post, you take a shot at my team.
Hows the girlfriend beater linebacker and receiver doing over there? Nothing says stable individual like kicking the crap out of your girl.
You point out that you did just fine without him, and then bitch about not getting enough compensation for a player the Steelers had the opportunity to resign him. He was a member of your 75th anniversary team. But it somehow got to the point that he wanted to leave the team. hmmmm.

That's because Alan Faneca is a whiny bitch. He wanted to come back if you remember correctly, he was sad he had to leave!
He was the guy that stepped up to the plate and said that the season was over when Ben Roethlisberger stepped in for an injured Tommy Maddox. That was the season the Steelers went 15 -1.
If they didn't have comp picks I wouldn't care that we didn't get a third or fourth for him. They do have comp picks though so the system shouldn't be an absolute sham.

Pat McInally (Harvard) scored a perfect 50 on the Wonderlic. He played for the Bengals.
Remember the Starting Lineup line of sports action figures? Pat was the brains behind it.

Personally...I think the existence of a compensatory pick system for UFA's is a sham.

I do too. There is a choice, sign the player or lose him. Don't ante up what it takes to keep the player, oh well.

I don't like it either. But if they are going to have one it should be based on actual factors like performance and player compensation.

I think if they're going to have it the picks should come from the signing teams, not forced in between rounds by the league.
And the other factor should be the original team's offer to the player...

I dont like that approach at all, and I doubt the NFLPA would either since it would severely limit the market for players, since teams would have to give up draft picks to sign that player. I really dont have an issue with how it is done, and I think well run franchises can really use this type of thing to their advantage.

Well, like I said...I don't think you should be compensated for not wanting to re-sign a player at their market value.

I understand that, but I also dont it is quite that simple. For one, teams overspend for players all the time, and teams like the Redskins do it almost yearly. I have no problems giving a team an extra mid round pick because they didnt want to overpay to keep a player, that another team was willing to overpay for. If you want to define market value as simply highest bidder then point taken. But, we are talking about a total of only 32 teams, a salary cap that limits teams, large market teams with more money, etc etc. I cant really see how a true market value is determined for a player due to all those factors, and more, being in play. I think the comp system just protects teams to a degree, from not being able to recover when they are unable to keep their free agents.

I would not be shocked to see Cutler wind up in Detroit, the #1 pick with Cleveland and Brady Quinn or Derrik Anderson in Denver. Or a similar deal with another team acting the part of Cleveland, I just can not think of another team that currently has an extra QB who has the potential to be a long term starter.

Tampa is through the roof on Josh Johnson, so that's another possibility.

I agree, he would be a downgrade. I am not sure what Denver is thinking or what the logic behind wanting to replace Cutler is (did he want to leave prior to this fiasco?), but I don't see too many options available to them. Unless they have enough confidence in Chris Simms as a starter, I am pretty sure they have shot themselves in the foot on this.

I'm not sure that Cutler was thrilled about Shanahan being fired - their offensive system was coming together, but their defense stunk (Cutler is 13-1 in games where the defense held the other team to fewer than 22 points)
But what I think really set him off was the half-truths he got regarding the Cassel trade scenarios. McDaniels should have just told Cutler the truth - he might still have gotten mad that Denver would even consider replacing him, but perhaps not as mad.

yeah, the Cassel replacing Cutler rumors/talks were what I meant by fiasco.
Regardless, I am pretty sure that denver is going to get significantly worse at QB this year no matter what winds up happening with Cutler.

Its based on the free agents you lost and obtained the prior year. I dont understand it completely, but there are 32 comp picks, and only teams who lose more players than they obtain in free agency are eligible for any of the picks. Then it is based on the players performance, contract, and as we found out from Dr. Funk his age (if he is over 30). And it could be based around a few more things.
