The book signing at the Huntington Book Review was a celebration of conservatism and a mini Tea Party all in its own right, with Mark and Sean standing in as two Sons of Liberty, but with every one of you there making up the membership in no lesser degree.
Mark's new book, Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto is the right message for where we are right now - the outpouring of support I saw was from people who not only have him in their hearts, but also this country and its best interests in their hearts. That is the common ground that underlay the whole evening, for me it was palpable and almost overwhelming at times.
My response, and I said this to both Mark and Sean, was "These are the people that listen to you - you should be proud." Amid a press of people that went around the block and had to wait to get a chance to get upstairs to where we were at it was courtesy that abounded, and the people who waited patiently to make it through this mini-gauntlet had a smile and words of encouragement to Mark and Sean.
We took home everything you gave us, we are trying to get through it all and address the points and the gifts - the picture of the past great conservatives laughing around a table together and the statue recreating the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima were two of my favorites.
It helps and it makes a difference to see you all like this, please never doubt it.
Thanks for a terrific evening, I enjoyed seeing you all, and more importantly I know they did too.
