Hey, everyone!
I just wanted to see how many of you were Linux users.
For those of you not familiar with the term, Linux is a free, open source operating system that can be used with, or as an alternative to Wndows.
Due to the fact that most Linux systems are totally free of cost, or very, very inexpensive, most people may not see that it is really one of the greatest examples of the free market around (a product created out of the passion of its creators, for a price of their choosing....that's freedom!) Besides, who does Mr. Gates donate to???
Anyway, if you use Linux, let me know your distro of choice! (I'm using Ubuntu Studio 8.10).

I won't trash Windows to support Linux. I like Linux and used Ubuntu for quite a while when I couldn't locate my Windows CD. Except for some minor issues with driver support, I really like Linux. Plus, most web servers are running Linux. And not just because it's free.
But, I've used Windows since the beginning and probly won't be letting it go anytime soon.

Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD. That close enough?

No driver issues recently. Can't really blame driver issues on linux anyhow, but on the companies that insist on refusing to either release their driver sources or release a linux driver. Microsoft doesn't have to deal with this problem and frankly I think that Microsoft is putting these companies up to this to hinder linux development.
In addition to my linux box, I also run a Winblows XP box.

I respect your wish not to trash windows, but I do have issues with them. However, I do echo the sentiment that Linux is great on its own, and stands on its own merits.

Yes, I agree with that assessment. Microsoft has gotten into some legal trouble in their efforts to thwart open source software (more recently with the OpenOffice vote that took place a year or two ago).
Are you using KDE 4 with OpenSuse?

If Windows keeps releasing quality products like Vista then Mac won't even need a marketing department, the work will be done for them.
With that said MAC knows how to market a product, then know their niche.
They also know how to blatantly lie about the competition and their own user base.

Not trying to nitpick here, but "MAC" is not the company. Apple is the company; Macintosh ("Mac") and Mac OS X are the products developed and sold by Apple.

I used UNIX since long before there was MS Windows, on the VAX platform. UNIX and LINUX are very similar, often use my old unix manuals/books for linux development reference. Now we use it on Suns and on PC's that can dual boot to either Linux or Windows.
AT work I now Linux (Redhat) on some of my computers and Windows on others. It just depends on what system I'm developing.
Since we use RedHat for all the additions they provide, it's not free.
I use MS Windows for things like email, office tools etc.
Visual Studio with the .net framework for both XP and embedded windows development.
And I use Linux when I'm developing products that require that operating system.
They are all tools for us to use when they fit our needs. Every tool has it's good points and it's bad points.

Apple screwed themselves in the early and mid 1980's by being so ridiculously proprietary with their products. IBM was not so proprietary and as a result it was the IBM/DOS platform that gained dominance. Apple has never recovered. If Apple had been more flexible in the 1980's, they would likely be the dominant platform today. It is their own fault they are not the dominant platform.

I first came into knowledge of linux when I was first an IRC operator and later an IRC server administrator. I was given various "shell" accounts and gained a working knowledge of linux. I even learned a small amount of C++ programming.
Fortunately, modern linux systems can be set up and installed by even novice users. NOT like the old days when setting up a linux system was a nightmare that only an experienced user dared attempt.

If you want to pay almost double for a PC that uses identical hardware, feel free to do so. There is absolutely nothing you can do on your Mac that I can't do on my PC, and in almost all cases my PC does it better.
1) You lose out when it comes to performance. The Intel Core (including the new I7s) processors can comfortably hit close to 4ghz air cooled when overclocked, and you don't sacrifice stability. Good luck doing that on a Mac with their much more restrictive motherboards that only run the processors at stock speeds.
2) I have an OSX vmware image that works just fine on my PC. That means I can run all of your native Mac software at a fraction of the cost!
3) If you are using an older Mac (pre-intel) you are even worse off.

I've played around with all of them.
I like Kubuntu the best.
I tripled booted on my old compaq,
Win Me/ Win XP / Kubuntu
my old compaq finally died, so now I have a laptop with Vista
and a desktop with XP.
Function wise, I think XP is still way better than Vista.
I'm never buying another windows system. Once XP and Vista are no longer supported, I'll move to Ubuntu or Kubuntu.
I figure in a few years ubuntu and its variants are gonna nuke microsoft. "Free" is a very powerful motivator.
France has already moved to ubuntu on all it's government computers.

Is this a case of yours is bigger than mine?
I paid a little over $1,000 for my iMac. It's enough for my needs. And I prefer OS X over Windows and the other *nix flavors I've tried.

Nope, it is a case of you wasting money by purchasing an overpriced PC with a shiny Apple logo on it.
I paid a little over $1,000 for my iMac.
I'm sure I could put together a comparable PC for under $500.
It's enough for my needs. And I prefer OS X over Windows and the other *nix flavors I've tried.
Like I said previously, I can run OSX with no problems on my PC. So again, there is absolutely no advantage to paying for over priced hardware.
Alternatively, you can pretty much make the Windows gui look and operate just like the Mac gui...
http://features.engadget.com/2004/06/09/turn-your-pc-into-a-mac/
And that is precisely what you are paying for, a pretty wrapper for your overpriced copy of freebsd.

Isn't Apple now manufacturing X86 based systems? Doesn't seem like that far of a stretch to run OSX on a machine that doesn't have an Apple logo on it.

Ya, they have been using the x86 processors for a while now, exact same ones that you will find in a PC. They use intel processors exclusively though, there are no AMD Macs.

I just spent some quality time recovering files. For some reason XP would show my second hard drive in disk management, but it was otherwise non accessible.
Installed Ubuntu inside XP (on the same partition as XP) and it had no problems at all accessing this data.
Damn Windows!

To all you Ubuntu users. How secure is Ubuntu?
I am tired of Windows. I update it, buy all type of anti virus software and anti spyware software and the viruses and spyware still get thru.
Do you use Internet Explorer? If so, switch to Firefox or Safari (yes, there's a Windows version.)

So how is Ubuntu. Good against viruses and spyware?
In general Linux has very good security.
But it's somewhat in the same boat is Mac. Although it has good security, there aren't nearly as many viri available. Not because it's a flawless OS, but because of the smaller user base.
By the way, you can install Ubuntu inside Windows without creating a new partition and possibly losing data.
This might seem like a stretch, but if you're a gamer, I've heard of native Windows games actually running better on Linux with Wine. I only ran a few Windows apps on Linux, but I think the increased performance has something to do with the more efficient file system that Linux uses.

I have a 600 MHZ E-Machine that I loaded with Ubuntu. This is the computer I have set up in my living room. It works fine for basic internet surfing and instant messaging. I do have problems with it when I try to do more complex things, but I think the problems are due to the hardware.

You don't want to use linux for gaming. Ya, there are some games that perform better under Wine, but the problem is one of compatibility. You will have new games where some features work and some don't etc. Some games that only work with a specific driver and graphics card etc etc
Here is an example...
Warhammer Online
Testsystem:
* ATI Radeon HD 3850 512MB (original ATI driver)
* AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
* 4 GB RAM
and:
* The same system with a Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra
What works?
* Installer
* Patcher
* Character selection
* joining world
* Instances
* Scenarios
* Ui-Addons
* Sound
On both systems.
What does not
* Character Rendering, only weapons no characters
On both systems.
What was not tested
nothing
Additional Comments
Bad Performance with my ATI graphics card and Characterrendering problems. (Rating Bronze)
With nvidia card: 25-30 FPS in capital city on lowest details ans characterrendering problems. (Rating Silver)

It isn't worth the effort unless you only play a couple games and you know for a fact they work well under wine on your specific hardware.

I'm a web developer. I also do server administration. I work on all three major platforms daily. OS x and Fedora at home and Win XP, Fedora, CentOS, RHEL at work. Not too many ubuntu servers in my world a few BSD boxes. If all the tools I need worked under Linux, I would probably switch completely at work. Alas no web developer can avoid checking their work in the browser from hell (IE).
Incidentally, though I have yet to try it, Linux users that have WINE installed might be interested in the following link.
