I've seen a few homes in my neighborhood with these large black stars (at least 2 feet in diameter) displayed prominetly on the house. I just noticed this about a month ago & was curious as to what it meant.

It can be related to armed services.

Either someone is currently deployed or is a veteran.

Or, in other areas, especially the south, it's just a decorative "barn star" representing well-being and prosperity.

Well, I've seen the blue stars and gold stars around here for veterans & deployed servicemembers (I'm active duty military) but the black ones threw me for a loop. One of my neighbors' star must be about 5 feet across! I just recently saw these go up on 2 different streets in the last 2 months.

A new decorating fad, like Pennsylvannia Dutch barn stars.

If it's what I think it is, it's just decoration. My wife loves the stars. Only thing though not sure about them being black

Blue stars = one for each member of the family serving on active duty

Gold stars = one for each family member killed in a war

Does it look like one of these, except black?

If so it probably doesn't have any symbolism behind it, it is just a decorating fad.

They are for pure decoration, however, there is some history behind it. Buildings used to be constructed using metal beams throughout the length of the building in an effort to better strengthen the walls. Metal stars were placed over the ends to make their appearance better.

Well, our neighbors to the right and across the street each have large RED stars on their houses and we have a collage of 3 different sized rustic GREEN stars on our house along with a BLUE STAR BANNER for our son. Ours and the neighbors across the street are displayed on the porch so, at times they appear to be BLACK. I had thought about displaying a GOLD STAR BANNER for one of my wife's uncles who died in the WW2 Battle of Savo Island but decided against it as people may get the wrong idea due to the ongoing conflicts.

Well, we just had a couple of flights come over the house along with a few Air Force jets. Lately, it's been happening a lot but then again we do live smack dab in the middle of one of the military flight corridors. :)

You know I just now realized that a scrawny white kid from Wisconsin grew up to be a black doctor on House ....I've watched both for years
