UN Watch obtained a copy of the Pakistani-authored proposal after it was distributed today among Geneva diplomats attending the current session of the UN Human Rights Council. Entitled "Combating defamation of religions," it mentions only Islam.

While non-binding, the resolution constitutes a dangerous threat to free speech everywhere. It would ban any perceived offense to Islamic sensitivities as a "serious affront to human dignity" and a violation of religious freedom, and would pressure U.N. member states -- at the "local, national, regional and international levels" -- to erode free speech guarantees in their "legal and constitutional systems."

Amazing...so much for freedom of speech with the U.N.

Islamic states: Religious freedom report does not sufficiently attack Israel
Published by UN Watch- at March 12, 2009 in Uncategorized.
During a debate at the U.N. Human Rights Council today, Islamic countries complained that a report on religious freedom did not adequately attack Israel, while daring to criticize Islamic countries. The report was presented by U.N. expert on Freedom of Religion and Belief, Ms. Asma Jahangir of Pakistan.

Although there is no "First Amendment"-type language in the UN charter, I would still hope that the spirit of our amendment would prevail in the UN. And tied to that hope is the expectation that we would not support any proposal that even hints of "establishment" of a preferred UN religion.

This Pakistani proposal violates all my hopes in that area. If we don't fight it aggressively in the UN, I will be sorely disappointed.

I'll go one step further. If this proposal passes (even as a non-binding resolution), we should exit the UN. Probably not during this administration, I just can't see that happening. But this organization is not in our interests any more.
