I talked to my twin today. She had a biopsy on her thyroid and the results came back--cancer. April 1 she will undergo surgery for either partial or total removal of her thyroid depending on whether it is malignant or benign.

Please say a little prayer for her. Thanks.

That's encouraging.

Of COURSE we're praying. The LORD give her docs the wisdom of Solomon -- and the loan of His Own healing words that healed those who had faith in Him and asked when He walked the earth with His own dear footsteps.

And give her the strength to dig her fingers into His coattails and never let go.

Hello Fall Guy,

I will keep your Twin in my prayers to the Good Lord that your Sister be given the Blessings of healing and strength to help her through this trial.

Be well,

Thanks everyone.

I've been doing research and it seems that it's the easiest to treat. Women are three times more likely to get it than men. I'm debating on having them check out my thyroid. But I don't have any symptoms.

I appreciate the prayers. Thanks.

I appreciate the prayers. Thanks.

My daughter was tested for thyroid cancer at the age of 15. A scary time it was and thankfully the tests came back negative for cancer.

The doctor she was seeing told us that thyroid cancer is the most treatable of all the cancers.

Not trying to get too personal here, but if you do not mind me asking...does your sister live on a coastline? The doctor that treated my daughter told us that the area within which we live has the highest incidence of thyroid cancer in this country due to our love of shellfish.

Prayers for your twin sister with a kicker thrown in for you. May God calm your anxiety as you wait for the results of her surgery.

Hang in there FallGuy.

Prayers continuing. Thirteen days and counting till the first.

May it be benign and the damage to stop it minimum.

And may her twin escape the same difficulty entirely.

And do NOT forget Fall Guy Boy #1 and Fall Guy On-the-Way and Lady Wife.

Nah, she lives up in the Rockies. Even if California falls into the ocean we'll be miles from beach front property. But if global warming persists....

And yeah, the research, I've done says it's one of the most treatable, mainly due to the thyroid absorbing iodine, so radioactive iodine can be used as part of treatment.

Still, it's one of those nasty surprises that hits.

Spoke to my sister this weekend. She's upbeat about the surgery, a little disappointed that it happened. But she's explored a lot of the options regarding what can happen and the drug supplements she can take.

I think she's more concerned about the financial side of things, I would be too.

Thank you so much. This means so much to me.
Glad she's upbeat about all this. You stay upbeat, too.
I'm upbeat, I think she's going to do fine. It's the worrying over "nothing" that gets to you.
How're the boy and the one the LORD's shaping even now doing?
The boy is growing and developing at greater rates than I thought possible. His vocabulary is expanding and I'm sure he'll be formulating sentences in no time. Is there a remote with a little "half-step" function for little children? I swear someone switched it from normal to 8x speed. As far as the growing one, I think all is well. I'm not sure when my wife's next appointment is, but this pregnancy seems to be going fine. I'm so excited.

She is doing fine. I need to get her on an exercise regimen (and my tubby little self too). Last pregnancy she was dealing with 3 and 4 year olds. Now she's dealing with Jr High kids. More mentally challenging, less physical. Run kid run!!!

Her nausea gets her every once in a while. So, if I'm home I scramble an egg for her. Crack it into a shot glass, mix with S&P, a little thyme, then onto a hot pan, flip it once, throw it on a tortilla and she's happy. Me? I'm nauseas now. Can't stand the smell, taste, or texture of eggs--all I get is sulfur. Bleh. My boo is the same--hates eggs. Ahhh daddy's little boy. So, my wife and I trade nausea for a while. But apparently I make mighty fine eggs, especially since I don't know what they taste like.
Not to mention the new job for Daddy........
I had an interview for a manager position last Monday. It went really well, so well I didn't get the job. But, the more important thing is, I made a really good impression on the interviewer who has tons of contacts throughout our organization. She didn't want to throw me to the wolves, yet, but is going to keep an eye out for me and recommend jobs. Already she's been talking to senior management about me. So, even though I didn't get the job, it's a blessing in disguise.

As far as my current job, which is an assistant manager position, we're bringing up a brand new team and next Monday we start training 7 new employees. This will be a great opportunity to show off what I can do. This'll be an experience.

Good news all around, for which I give the LORD most humble thanks!

No, toddlers do NOT come equipped with a Slow Down knob -- they're either dead stopped sound asleep or they've got the throttle of their engines wide open and the drive in FORWARD!

Teens, on the other hand............ well, they've got this special gear shift: forward full speed ahead -- to hell with obstacles, backwards full speed ahead kindergarten was FUN, and sideways, up, down, in circles and loop-de-loops I-don't-care-just GO, full speed ahead and to hell with obstacles or directions, focus, or anything else resembling adult OR child existence.

I adore toddlers -- and teens are even more fun. NO BOREDOM

I got the news last night that she had to be there at 10AM local time, which means she probably will be in surgery at noon. As soon as my wife gets off work, I'll be making the trip over to see how my sis is doing.

On a side note, my older brother had his thyroid examined and it's "abnormal" or something. So, I'll probably have to get my thyroid examined. Bleh.

Thanks for your prayers and support.

Update:

It was malignant cancer. They removed her entire thyroid plus one of the parathyroids. They would've removed a couple lymph nodes in the area, but they looked good and her vocal nerve is really thin. So, instead of risking damaging the nerve they left the lymph nodes in. She looked fine (as can be expected post-operation) and they'll check on her calcium levels to see if she can be released tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for the prayers. My older brother and sister were also diagnosed with cysts or nodules on their thyroids. I'll be scheduling an appointment with a doctor to see if I'm in the clear or not. I'm just hoping my stay in radioactive Chelyabinsk cured me of that years ago.

Yeah. She'll be taking meds for the rest of her life. One of their friends was joking about the end of the world/civilization saying that because she'll be on the meds she just won't survive. Their doctor laughed and said all she'd have to do would be to eat animal thyroids.

Did the doc tell her about keeping Tums/Rolaids with her 24/7?? My calcium gets low and the first place you feel it is your lips and your nose. They get that semi-numb feel. Since her parathyroids were removed also, she'll have to self-regulate her calcium levels and eat tums when it's low.

There are all sorts of thyroid meds that are prescribed. The one that I take is Armour Thyroid. It's dried, grinded up, compressed pig thyroids. It smells like it too... I also have to take Synthroid since my T4 is not high enough on the Armour.

My dad's a pharmacist and my mother's a nurse. They've been advising her on that. Only one of her parathyroids was removed (I believe there are 4). I'm not sure what prescription she will be on.

Thank you for the advice.

my thyroid and all 4 para's were completely removed, so I'm 100% reliant on meds. Glad to hear she came thru with flying colors!!

btw, a good endocrinologist is hard to find, especially one that will listen to their patients. They can tell the doc all day long that they're drained and display nearly all symptoms of low thyroid hormone, but as long as the blood work comes back normal, that's all the doc cares about. But if you can find that lonely doc out there who cares about the patient, you're doing well. I finally found one after about 6 years of searching and swapping docs.

There are sites that she can go to and get reviews about endo's. My doc is one who ranks up toward the top in patient satisfaction.

Thanks everybody.

She came by on Friday for a little bit. She looks great. Has a little scar across her throat.

In a couple weeks my sister will be doing radiation therapy. She won't be able to be around pregnant women, so my wife won't be able to visit. And she won't be able to be within 6 feet of people for a week. I'm thinking, hell, I've been exposed to more radiation than what they can put into her.

Monday I'll be calling to set up an appointment for my thyroid. I get to see if I get a matching scar across my throat.

I will be praying about that radiation therapy.

Thanks.

I've my first scheduled Dr.'s appointment tomorrow and they're going to do a first exam. On May 5th, I have an appointment with the endocrinologist. We'll see how things go from there for me.

Hello FallGuy,

I wish you all the best in your appointment today. You, your Sis and your Family were in my prayers at the Falls last evening. I was going to take the ride earlier but some things were a bit pressing. It worked out for the best though; I usually read these threads before I go and I'm glad I did yesterday afternoon. The 'Big Guy', if He was listening, heard many words of hope, healing and some pleas for new miracles and grateful thanks for the ones I pray He is working on already. There is no harm for the asking methinks and I did.

Be well, you are in my prayers this fine day.

Jim

It was just blood work today. Listen to my lungs, see how fat I'm getting (flabby really). BP is a little higher than my normal it was 120/70. I'm usually 110/60.

The blood work could take up to a week. We'll see what happens from there.

Thanks Rea and Kelly. I'm not too concerned. If it is God's will, so be it.

This weekend I get to plant about 30 trees. Yeah?

I also got myself a Kindle from Amazon and have uploaded about 130 books to it--including scriptures. So, if I disappear from here for a while, I think I might have found the cure for my Hannity's addiction. ;)

Sheesh, how environmentally responsible of you.

I'm glad things are going well for you.

Praying about your own membership in the cuthroat club.

And about the tree planting.

After 30, you're going to NEED those books. Hope Kindles work from a semi-prone position -- just be careful, young man. You are precious to us.

The funny part is, I got my little brother to do most of the digging.

It was really good to see him. That kid makes me laugh.

So far, I've really enjoyed the Kindle. I downloaded about 130 books onto it so far (most of those free). I'm in the middle of Brothers Karamazov. Finished Crito, again, makes you think. Honestly, I think this is the way textbooks should go. Except they need to be sturdier, especially if we're going to have kids use them. I love the dictionary feature on it. There are times I see a word and am either unfamiliar with it or want to confirm I have the correct definition and since I don't have a dictionary right with me, I continue on getting the gist of it without the full picture. This has a built in dictionary that all I have to do is put the cursor right in front of the word and I can see exactly what it means in seconds.

Planting trees and a paperless book... Guess I must not be conservative enough. Maybe I should find out what my carbon credit is, anybody know Al Gore's number?

Wow! I may have to look into that Kindle thingie for Christmas.

Crito to Karamazov? shocking juxtapositioning Might be interesting to have one fresh in the memory while tackling the other.

And I work like a fiend to teach students to wait for the context to clarify a meaning instead of getting bogged down with a dictionary! :)) I've got to check this technology out!

I really enjoy it. But it's not the only electronic reader on the market. There are others, some cheaper, like the Sony eReader. They do about the same thing, except the Kindle can download from amazon with the "whispernet" technology. My little brother thinks if he's deployed he'll get one. I would push him more towards the Sony. Seems more solid (he's a clutz), doesn't have the whispernet (cell phone technology) which he wouldn't need anyway, and you can put SD cards in there for more books/audiobooks/etc.

 I know. And if I really knew what I was doing, I'd have the double  going. :)) I'm just an ignorant naif looking for something to read.

I do that first. Look for the context, then go for the dictionary. I'm trying to expand my vocabulary. Seems I'm only successful in expanding my pant size. :(

Look for Kindle 2

Basically, you download a book to your computer or in the cases above to a little hand-held device. The above have a screen that isn't backlit and is easier on the eyes to read. No eyestrain. More like reading from paper. I think that is where technology might shift, especially for academics.

We're okay.

Facing money crises out the wazoo -- but what's new about that, huh?

And I'm very seriously thinking about never teaching again -- because my own health problems are hurting the students in keeping me from being as effective as I should be. Which is tearing my heart out in some ways, and in others would be a great relief.

But the LORD will provide solutions on both fronts -- of this I am sure. I just have to trust and not panic and not flip out to try to ram my own solutions through instead of waiting on His.

Which, for a control freak who does NOT like chaos, is really tough to do.

We academics NEED those reading technologies in the worst possible way. Our students need them even more.

Mostly, we need a way for us to download the text and interact with it -- like the two-column table I teach my students -- the text is in the left column, with specific critical phrases in a different font color to highlight it FAST -- and their comments in the second column right beside the highlighted bits and pieces. A sort of computerized marginal annotation system, if you will.

You know you're in my prayers. It can be very difficult to chase after the thing you love and have your health prevent it. Have you ever thought of doing classes on-line? My twin sister is a teacher and she looked at doing that.

That annotation thing is possible with these electronic readers. I can highlight phrases, make notes, bookmark a page, right on the page. It stores the notes on the device and I can either access them separately or in-page. The only problem is that the keyboard is tiny, built more for the texters of today. Guess it'll be one way for me to learn how to text.

I've actuallly thought about offering my own Web based instruction in basic English grammar and speaking/writing effectiveness as a sort of remedial tutorial package for all ages.

But I'd need greater computer knowledge from an assistant to manage the darn site, I'm afraid. Grammar and how to manipulate the English language I know. Computers bum-fuzzle me to little shreds of blithering idiocy, I'm afraid.

And those tiny, dinky little text messaging keypads! Sheesh. No way I could would might want to piddle with that peck-peck-peck like a chicken typing with the point of a pen.

Paperless books...???? What would I hold my dvd stand with...what would I do when one of the kids puts up my new book and I can't find it...what would I do for furniture if I couldn't stack my books??? Can you imagine what would happen if I was to not buy anymore books and was able to get rid of the 1000's that I already have? I would be in "HEAVEN!"

I do love the feel of an old book and the history that it represents! I often sit down and wonder just how many others have sat like me to read...what were their thoughts a hundred yrs ago while they were reading?

Sounds like a truly wonderful idea, I do have one concern though! I wonder if anyone has ever taken a bath, dozed off and dropped your book? You know the paperbacks that swell to 4 times their size when water is added? The same books that you attempt to painstakingly dry but it takes weeks as they are so water logged!!! I would love to do the paperless books but would I get zapped if it accidently fell in the bath water...??? Wonder if they come out with any that are water proof as it defeats ones purpose to take a bath when they can't read a book!!!

As you can tell FG...I am a deep thinker! In fact my mind is like the bottomless pit, once something gets in it......it is lost FOREVER!:))

Hope all is going well with you and your sister! Take care and have a wonderful day...

That's the ticket, finding someone who can develop and maintain the site for a can of Mt. Dew and cheesey poofs.

As for the keypad it's perfect for Generation Y kids. They've grown up texting all their lives. It turns the phrase "I'm all thumbs." For us it means I'm a clutz, for generation y and subsequent generations it means their dexterous.

Books!!! You gotta love them. If you dropped the electronic book, the most you'd get would be a tingle and money down the drain. Because it isn't plugged in to a current it wouldn't be able to get enough to do any real damage.

And I'm sure someone has done that already. ;)

Well, I just received a call from my mom. My little brother is in the hospital with ulcerative colitis. He was doing his rounds last night and has been experiencing a lot of pain. So, he checked into the ER and they admitted him. I called, but they're still in doing a scope, had to sedate him.

I didn't want to start a new thread. Please pray for him.

If it lasts that long. I keep nibbling the leaves. They said it was an annual. So, I might have to seek ways to remedy that.
Word on your brother?
He'll spend another night in the hospital and then they'll release him. He's in a lot of pain, goes from his rectum to his chest. Poor kid. It looks like they'll perform a colectomy sometime. :(
Your sister?
She's doing fine. In June she goes through the radiation treatment. Bleh.
And the process of getting FG Darling #2 safely into this world is not forgotten either. How goes your bride and her contribution to the "be fruitful and multiply to fill the earth" project?
My wife is doing fine. Going through the puke and the tired stage. Which means, I try and cook eggs for her every once in a while. Yuck. So, we trade nausea. May 29th is the day we find out our baby's gender. FallGuy3 (already got FallGuy2) or FallGirl. :D I'm in the precarious position of wanting both. Either one will be great. FallGuy3 would be great for FallGuy2 so they can roughhouse, but I still would like a little FallGirl.
And the new job?
I love the new job. It's keeping me really busy, though. Run all evening long just to keep up with 20 people and keep them on task. This next week should be better since I'm not doing all my other tasks in addition to training, answering questions, and 100% reviewing their work. I'm also applying for another managerial position in another function of the organization. Job closes on Monday, so I'll send it in tomorrow. (I've got a couple upper management people reviewing my application for pointers.)

Hi Fall Guy,

Just a few months after my mother passed away I began having difficulty with my blood pressure, increased pulse rate, losing weight rapidly, muscle weakness, and extreme exhaustion. I was diagnosed with Graves Disease and had to have several scans of my thyroid which turned up to show numerous nodules. My Endocrinologist believed they were cancerous and so he sent me to an ENT specialist to schedule surgery for a thyroidectomy. I'm very happy to tell you that thyroid cancer is the most treatable cancer of all cancers with a success rate of the cancer never returning in the high 80 percentile. While going through surgery and treatment is tough at the time, please let your sister know there is a rainbow at the end of her journey. I am cancer free and feel great! She's going to feel good once again. The valleys we traverse as christians teach us about faith.. God bless you and God bless your sister. I will keep her in my prayers. Let her know if she needs someone to talk to who has been there, I'm here..
