The guy doesn't look like he can walk to me. He probably always could have used a walker and the medical attention from the spider bite simply revealed that.

I am glad that he is learning how to walk again. That is good news. I don't think the Brown recluse spider (if that is what it was ) cured him. But if he believes it did, that is ok. Main thing is he is able to walk again.

You know why I don't believe a Brown recluse spider did this for him? There are no populations of Brown recluse spiders in California. If it was, it probably hitched it's way to his home, via a move of his, or someone else.

Why do you think there are no brown recluse spiders in California? Just wondering -- I know several people who were bitten -- one eventually died two years after the bite from continued complications. I'm wondering if it might have been something else but the doctors mistook for Brown recluse? (Being so afraid of spiders I can't talk in the presence of one I might think is poisonous, I'd be glad for your input)

I have dealt with those kinds of bites before in the animal field. Humans suffer the same kinds of effects and trauma.

I don't doubt he believes he such. The scientific facts as we know them to be at this day in time, do not corroborate his claim.

If he was bit by one, it would be very, very rare. And chances are, the spider came into his area through some kind of unnatural means, in regards to natural habitat.

I am inclined to agree with Gene. Something might have been missed with his condition previously, it changed, for whatever reason, or some other reason, that allowed the events to unfold like they did. I hope his recovery continues.

Thank you for that link. I read the article -- it was very interesting. My friend who died had been playing ball at Griffith Park in the Los Angeles area -- the baseball went into some bushes, and he reached in to grab the ball. A few minutes later, he noticed bite marks on his forearm, a few days later, he was in the hospital with necrosis on his arm, and the described pattern of heart problems, high fever, etc. His wife was told he had been bitten by a brown recluse. He never recovered, and died two years later. After reading this article, it would be very sad to think that doctors were treating him for something that didn't exist, and missed what the real diagnosis should have been. However, I will now stop thinking that every spider I see (we live in a forest -- lots of spiders) is a Brown recluse and just be on the look-out for scorpions getting a ride into the house on firewood.

Scorpion bites are no fun either. I have been stung several times before in the past, while on laying on the floor in the house. Talk about a "Shazaam" moment.

Sad story about your friend. :-(

No venomous creatures here in England, well there is the adder. That's our most poisonous snake, oh and you could get the odd bee sting, that's it...

I went to Australia once, they have the worst spiders as well as poisonous snakes....

I was taking a walk on the wild side...........;)...........

I've seen enough brown recluse bites to know that I don't want to be anywhere near the little ********.
