The victim of the identity theft is reportedly serving 3 years in prison (most likely unaware of the problem). The illegal immigrant, claims, "I only wanted the pain to end."

She's a thief and a child neglecting bimbo who took off running from her own kids to go do some thieving. She's a horrible person any way you look at it. She's a bad mother who took off running from her kids, she's an idiot who can't get a job better than an assembly line even with a stolen I.D. and she robbed Medicaid of over $100,000 in benefits from an insurance plan she never paid a dime into.
Identity theft which involves changes to medical records can kill somebody, but this damned disgusting piece of trash didn't care who she hurt or killed; she was all about herself and everybody else be damned.
I have no sympathy for this thieving child abusing piece of human debris. Calling her scum would be a compliment.

From the article:
"It's absolutely common," said Julie Santos, a League of United Latin American Citizens organizer in Chicago who helps low-income immigrants in need of organ transplants find charitable aid. "It has nothing to do with: 'Oh, I'm going to steal your identity and screw you.' Unfortunately, that is the reality and that is why the immigration system is so broken."
Citizens Organizer in Chicago? Why does this not surprise me?
And, Julie..... It has EVERYTHING to do with "I'm going to steal your identity and screw you." This woman deserted her family, traveled into our country illegally, then stole a job from an American citizen, and then stole a half-million worth of medical services. Afterwards, she fled back to Mexico.
I feel no compassion for this human debris whatsoever.

People wonder why health costs continue to rise?
You have this one woman stealing over half a million dollars from the hospital, only some of it recoverable (what was it 1/5th or less?). Now, imagine what happens with the multitude of other illegals abusing the ER and other services. The costs pile up and the people that actually pay their bills end up getting hit in the wallet because dregs abuse the system and get free health care.

Also from the article:
"She secured an assembly-line job in a snack food factory with an ID purchased on the black market."
She does business with identity pirates. Her purchase of a forged identity is what fuels the identity theft criminals. "Gloria", the woman whose identity was stolen is going to have to do a lot of credit repair because she's got a quarter-million dollars in unpaid medical bills, a job she never paid income or FICA taxes for and probably a whole bunch of other bills this deadbeat bimbo racked up in her name.
This article tries to gin up some sympathy, but if she'd done that to my identity I'd want to strangle her. This is not a victimless crime. Sure, "Gloria" is in prison where she can't do anything about this which made her an easier identity to steal, but from the sounds of "Gloria", a grave robber and armed robber serving a stint in Texas, I don't think I'd want to tick her off too much. A convicted Texican felon who has no problem with dead people is not somebody to trifle with.

Correct. The story tries to build sympathy for the poor illegal and demonize her victim. The illegal was just a helpless victim of cervical cancer. Her victim, Gloria, was an evil grave-robber, a convict. No need for sympathy there!!!
The problem is simple, identity theft is identity theft no matter who the victim is. If Gloria is going to rehabilitate herself after her stint in prison (don't know her case) she will have the extra burden of dealing with the identity theft.

If a doctor or hospital had done this - falsified records, sent out bills with bogus names or identities with the intention of getting paid enough to keep the medical office/clinic/hospital solvent - it would be called fraud, the fraudulent party would be vilified in the press. Meanwhile, the health care system is out a half million dollars.
In Hammonton, NJ, a hospital that serviced a primarily blue collar, working class and geriatric population just shut its doors because it could not afford to stay open. And now, to the drain of unfunded charity care, we have to worry about identity theft siphoning off the shrinking health care dollar?
Did the person doing 3 years in Texas, the one who's identity was stolen commit a theft of a half million dollars?

Did the person doing 3 years in Texas, the one who's identity was stolen commit a theft of a half million dollars?
Yep, because the thief was using her identity so she's on record as being the recipient.
What's likely to happen is the hospital, for tax purposes, is going to write off this as a bad debt. To do that, they have to give an I.R.S. 1099 to somebody and that somebody has to be identified to the I.R.S. with a Social Security Number. "Gloria" has one and "Mariana" doesn't, so guess who the Hospital is going to 1099 for the value of the goods and services received?
Now the I.R.S. is going to believe that "Gloria" has gotten $400,000+ worth of goods and services that she owes taxes on. Since that's good for about $150,000 in taxes, the taxman is going to be keenly interested in collecting this money.
Sucks to be Gloria. She's probably going to do her 3 years for robbery and go right back in for tax evasion.

"Trinity Regional Health System, which treated Mariana de la Torre in the Quad Cities area, has seen a 23 percent jump in Medicaid and charity cases since 2004, treating about 12,000 such patients in 2008, the hospital said.
The hospital spent 41 percent more on charity care last year than the $16 million projected, and none of it was government-financed."
Now, if you do the math, 41% of $16 Million is $6.65 Million, bringing the total the hospital spent to $22,650,000 on 12,000 patients. That means the average case sets them back about $1,900.
Trinity Medical Center has 514 licensed beds. That means each bed has to cough up $1,900 per year in unpaid expenses, which costs the paying patients an extra $5.20 per day best case.
No problem, the insurance companies will pick that up, right? Who pays for health insurance? That's you and me, so these people are taking money right out of our pockets even if we don't use those beds.
Now if Mariana de la Torre had been honest, the Hospital could have gotten money from the Federal Government which reimburses hospital services to illegal immigrants to the tune of about $250 Million per year, but again, that money comes from taxpayers and she robs the legal American citizen.
Actually, if Mariana de la Torre had been honest, she wouldn't be sneaking across the border in the trunk of a car, buying fake ID on the black market and lying on employment applications.
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-marianamar15,0,7117047.story
"And that even means bringing Mariana to see a local soothsayer to determine whether Mariana's illness is "a sort of curse." It might be a curse, he would tell them, but he had no answers for it."
A thief's guilty conscience is a curse too, but apparently Mariana has miraculously avoided that one.

LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens) is crazy in bias for Democrats.
http://www.lulac.org/publications/108thcongress-1-2.pdf
If you look through their Congressional "Scorecard" only DEMOCRATS get 100% approval from LULAC. The highest Republican scorer, AZ Senator John "JUAN" McCain only gets a 67% from these people and he's the leading advocate for open borders and no control over immigration.
To LULAC, being a Republican is at least -33 points on their stupid little Congressional scorecard. Meanwhile, Democrats get about a +50 point boost to their scores for being Democrats.

I say I am darned sad the woman is dying of cancer, and I pray for her and her family.
She has a lot to answer for with what she did to her children by leaving them abandoned for three years, now knowing she will soon leave them again.
Beyond that I have no sympathy for any of her actions once she crossed our border with the intent to deceive and defraud and break all of our laws.
Her condition does not make me forgive her her crimes.
But there will be many a person and I am certain many an Obama supporter that will say this is reason for amnesty legislation, so that she could have come out of the shadows and not have been afraid to seek medical attention sooner.
They will blame America for her death and for her having to leave her children motherless.

No. By the time she dies, she will probably be back, working down at the car wash in Kansas City. She will be the one who has been receiving treatment at a different hospital under a differrent name. She'll have brought her kids this time so they will have to be placed in foster homes where they will then be elligible for free medical, food stamps, and education. The seed doesn't fall too far from the tree.

There are 4 States that border Mexico. All 4 States consistently land in the top ten most identity frauds per capita. Coincidence? Hardly.
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/bus/stories/DN-perfi_02bus.ART0.State.Edition1.3a6ab43.html
In 2005, there were a whopping 249,000 cases of medical identity theft. These thefts are potentially devastating for what they do to innocent victim's ability to obtain health insurance or possibly employment.
For example, the real "Gloria" (not Mariana) is going to get out of jail and want insurance, but since Medicaid was billed in Gloria's name for cancer poor "Gloria" is going to have a heck of a time finding an insurer who would touch her with a ten foot pole. If she does find insurance it probably won't be cheap.

I had to read the story twice to make sure I was comprehending the 'spin' and 'twist' correctly.
Cancer and pain did not bring this woman here...a job did. This woman left her children and came here in 2006...nothing said about her condition or knowledge of her condition. It reads as though she was coming here to work..and would send for her kids once she was set up. 2007 rolls around and this woman feels faint...finds out later she has cervical cancer...waits a bit longer as she doesn't have insurance...then bleeds out one day and is rushed in ER. Out of no where she chooses to use her fake id in hopes of receiving treatment? Come on..this has flim flam all over it. Con game...and she knew what she was doing.
I understand having an illness and wanting to receive help..but this goes far beyond that simple precept. What this woman did was unconscionable! But hey..she's poor and everyone in America is rich right?
They need to finish that darn fence....send home those who don't belong here legally..and be done with it...sob stories and all!

What I really don't understand is if Mexico is blaming us for their current drug wars...death tolls rising into the thousands now...why on earth are we simply sitting on our hands? Why aren't we shipping these illegals home? Why aren't we pulling out the 'Louisville Slugger" and taking care of biz? It's like we are purposely ignoring the issue? Why? what does our government hope to gain by ignoring it? Save a few crop pickers? Cheap labor dish washers? I mean really...Why?

However, it doesn't change the fact that we live in a society of laws that are to protect everyone within that society...regardless how fantastic the perps story is or how heart wrenching their situation. There is always a choice. We abandon certain laws and make way for one or two cases...we have chaos on the horizon.
As I said..we need to do something about this now...not ten years from now...not some heart wrenching story of strife given as an excuse...not some excuse as to why they are breaking our laws....start placing them in Gitmo as enemy combatants....maybe they'll think twice before trying to come here illegally?

What about the hospital? It sounded in the story like they pretty much knew that she wasn't in the country legally and they let her rack up a huge medical bill anyway!
The hospital didn't notice that "Gloria" didn't speak any English, didn't notice that her next of kin was "N/A" and had no medical records anywhere?
I see these illegals at the County Hospital all the time. They can't even keep their own aliases straight among themselves. You see them at the front desk asking for the room number of Jose Gonzalez, the receptionist says "we have no one by that name" and then they start rattling off alias after alias! "Jose Ramirez?" No. "Jose Velazquez"? No. "Jose Jalapeno?" until they've gone through a list of aliases and the receptionist doesn't bother calling the cops on these people.
They're blatant and I don't get how they're so hard to catch. I mean seriously, if you've got Sally Jones on the I.D. card and she doesn't speak anything but spanish, then why can't anybody see that as a clue?
Employer: Sally Jones?
"Sally": Si?
Employer: Speak any English?
"Sally": Very little. Hablo Espanol!
Employer: How'd you come by the name "Sally"?
"Sally": Salazar!
Employer: Get out you freak impostor!
This should really tick off the Latino community because their identities are the premium ones for these illegal aliens from Mexico to steal! If you've got a name like Sanchez or Rodriguez, a fake ID with that name on it is a lot more credible than Smith or Jones or Cunningham. That makes those with Hispanic-sounding names profiled for Identity Theft by these illegal aliens.
They're actually eating their own and don't seem to realize it.

Self preservationist and pilgrim Marianna de la Torre was merely another undocumented Mexican immigrant who took advantage of America's open-door policy. The American people have no right to complain about "illegal" immigration. The American people have in effect invited illegal immigrants to come to America. An analogy would be having a house full of visible money and jewelry -- and leaving the doors and windows unlocked with a sign saying "Welcome! Come and get it! Make yourself at home (Mi casa es su casa)."
Furthermore, Americans should welcome illegal immigrants as they help add to the growing list of foreigners who contribute to our goal of ethnic diversity and multiculturalism.

Admittedly, I've stepped away this week and weekend from the t.v. news. However, I did hear the wonderful blurb from the Mexican President last night that the USA was to blame for this current boarder drug war mess. And why are we to blame? Well...gee...cuz we have an appetite for drugs that only Mexico can conjure. To tell you truthfully...the guy gives me the hibbie geebies.
Your most likely correct in assuming the legalization of marijuana. Harder stuff like cocaine, or heroin...I can't see it just yet...but one can never know what the great and powerful OZ Obama will consider in the future.
Perhaps Washington will wake up when one of their family members is kidnapped? Or killed for trying to traffic American made drugs? It's not real to them until it happens to them...sad state of affairs to be sure.

If you're a woman and you steal a name like "Gloria", Mariana's victim of choice, then that's a fairly common name for a hispanic woman. Ever heard of Gloria Estefan? I digress. Anyway, the name was probably chosen by Mariana De La Torre for her fraud because Gloria is a totally believable name for a Hispanic woman.
So, if you've got a name like "Gene" (my personal favorite) or "Gary" or some such there's not a whole lot of believability in a fake ID with that name on it. You're not likely to get employed, rent anyplace or get a loan with a name that far out of whack with your ethnicity.
The problem with E-Verify is that it ENCOURAGES identity theft because what it does is runs SS#'s against names which means it's even MORE IMPORTANT for illegal aliens to be stealing good matches between names and SS#'s. It's a horribly flawed system which accomplishes nearly the opposite of what it's intended to do.
If the gov't were SERIOUS about E-Verify (and they're not) they'd link more than SS# data and citizenship, they'd also link tax information to net more red flags.
Let's say that I make $80,000 per year and have been making that kind of income for decades. Why would I be looking for a $20,000 per year job and take a $60,000 annual pay cut? That doesn't make sense, and things that don't make sense should throw up big red flags. Do highly skilled radio comm techs with decades of experience and FCC licenses normally take jobs washing dishes? Not very often.
If E-Verify had any plans to succeed, it would have noted "Gloria" lives in Texas (in prison, actually) and Mariana/Gloria is in Illinois. She's a thousand miles away from home, and applying for a job packing food snacks? E-Verify as it sits is too lobotomized to catch that. If the SSN and name match, GOOD TO GO!
E-Verify needs to include I.R.S. data to catch location disparities, salary disparities, and occupational disparities. Lobotomized as it is, it's not catching much of anything.

If the gov't were SERIOUS about E-Verify (and they're not) they'd link more than SS# data and citizenship, they'd also link tax information to net more red flags...
The government is NOT SERIOUS.
The red flags that the mainframes at IRS throws up are more likely to be noticed if they're from you or me. They overlook the multitude of people using the same SS numbers. That's just more revenue to the federal coffers.

The victim of the identity theft is reportedly serving 3 years in prison (most likely unaware of the problem). The illegal immigrant, claims, "I only wanted the pain to end."
What say you?
She's a thief and should go to prison.

Another informative post. :) You raise very good points. Although, it still bothers me that all that would need to be checked for *me* to get a job.
I suppose there's no other way around it.
At least my name doesn't seem like a viable match for illegal immigrant ID theft.

Remittances (money sent home) to Mexico by relatives in America are estimated to be about $25 Billion per year.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/28/world/americas/28briefs-REMITTANCESD_BRF.html
Social Security taxes at 12.6% (combined employer and employee) would be $3,150,000,000 which I'd call a nice chunk of change.
That's just based on remittances, and not all Mexicans are sending every dime home so it's true, we're talking about big money for the Government now but it's a debt obligation with a balloon payment due.
If "Gloria", the victim of Mariana's fraud lives to collect Social Security, the SS administration will be owing her based on contributions that Mariana made. They'll be paying more at the end of the road than if there had never been an illegal alien throwing money into the SS system in the name of an imprisoned inmate named Gloria in Texas.
Worse, the illegal aliens with Social Security numbers wreak havoc on the actuarial tables. The odds are pretty good that people are going to die before they're 65 (68 in my case) and that SS won't have to pay, but what if two people have the same SS#? Three people? What happens to the odds of them living to benefit age? It perverts the actuarial tables and means that SS is more likely than it should be to have to pay out on that SS#, costing more money.
This corruption is a threat to an already-doomed system and while it's gravy now, it's garbage later. Today's money is tomorrow's bill and the irresponsibility of taking the money now is going to cost bigtime in the long run.

Illegals turned to citizens will mostly fall in which voting block?
When the Republicans had control of the White House, Congress and the SCOTUS,did they end this crap?
No, so how can you only point the finger at Democrats?
We should blame ourselves for not voting for our own economic interests and instead voting along party lines.
Illegal immigration is a demographic invasion of the US by Mexico where it involves illegal Mexicans.

Illegal Alens should be treated the same way in America as the way Mexico treats its Illegal Aliens , do what ever it takes, and pretend you don't understand them even if you speak their language.
Mexico : The most dangerous Country in the World !

Illegal immigration IS an economic interest. Here in Arizona, when Proposition 200 was going full tilt, businesses tipped their hand when they ran ads and lobbied hard against it. http://www.immigrationline.org/feature.asp?issueid={19AAAD22-5EEF-4523-90FB-F8738D74BABD}
Now, why would Businesses oppose moves against illegal immigration? Same reason businesses exist! MONEY!!
There was an interesting call on KFYI some years back with radio host Barry Young (husband of Kim Kommando). The caller was detailing how businesses hire illegals without HIRING illegals through the magic of subcontracting.
Let's say you're running a golf course and you need landscapers. Do you hire illegal aliens? HECK NO! Do you want to keep expenses down? HECK YES! So what do you do? Subcontract with a landscaping company who gets in, does the work cheap, gets out, you pay dimes on the dollar and your nose is shiny clean because you didn't hire one single person, much less an illegal alien.
So businesses make out like banditos, don't run afoul of any labor laws and if anybody asks questions about who did the work, he points at the subcontractor who is probably running under his fifteenth business name by then.
Remember, revenue minus expense equals profit. Lower expenses means higher profits, and what businessman doesn't love higher profits?
Economic self interests aren't the solution to this problem at all. They're the SOURCE of it.

Wow we are touchy.
Castigating me for asking a simple question...
Why not answer my question then give me hell?
Why not?
FYI I am on record here at Hannity for soundly condemning the right, Bush McCain ET AL for their not doing more to fix the illegal immigrant problem when they could have, as well being on record as soundly condemning anyone in business, left or right leaning, for aiding and abetting the illegals with jobs or free medical care or free public education etc. etc.
So take your indignation and go pound sand or answer the question, "Illegals turned to citizens will mostly fall in which voting block?".
When you have answered that question then there will be a follow up question.
