The first major front on liberalism was here in the United States in the founding of this great nation.http://i3.ytimg.com/vi/BZBtVBh9Ok0/default.jpg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZBtVBh9Ok0)There were two parties, the Democrat-Republican Party and the Federalist Party, and the Federalist Party believed in what most liberals believe today which is a huge national government, higher taxes, and paid income to government officials while the Democrat-Republican Party believed in low taxes, state's rights, and the duty of the government official. The biggest front of liberalism came from across the Atlantic in the French Revolution however.http://i2.ytimg.com/vi/5I23Z1sZ8Mg/default.jpg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I23Z1sZ8Mg)Two parties arose out of the French Revolution, the Girodins and the Montagenarts. The Girodins believed in a weaker national government, lower taxes, the power should be in the local county in France, and the imprisonment but not the execution of King Louis XVI while the Montagenarts believed in a strong national government, higher taxes, and the immediate execution of the king. The movement they started was called a radical democracy or liberalism. The first big social change here in the United States was the counter-culture where you can still see these "flower kids" as the liberal professors in American classrooms and as liberal politicians. That is the history of liberalism from the start of our Great Nation.
