Global warming 'will be worse than expected' warns Stern
Economist says his 2006 groundbreaking report underestimated risk and accuses governments of not being ready for consequences of 6C temperature rise
(http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/mar/12/climate-change-scienceofclimatechange#history-byline)
Politicians have failed to take on board the severe consequences of failing to cut world carbon emissions, Nicholas Stern, the economist who warned the government of the high cost of climate change (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/climate-change), said today.
Stern told a meeting of climate change scientists in Copenhagen that the effects of global warming would be worse than he predicted in his seminal 2006 report on the economics of the problem. He said policy-makers needed to think more about the likely impact of severe temperature rises of 6C or more.
Speaking after a keynote speech at the conference, Stern said: "Do the politicians understand just how difficult it could be? Just how devastating 4, 5, 6 degrees centigrade would be? I think not yet. Looking back, the Stern review underestimated the risks and underestimated the damage from inaction."
His remarks echo concerns by other scientists at the meeting. Privately, many climate experts and officials say that the European target of limiting world temperature rise to 2C above pre-industrial levels is no longer realistic.
Steven Sherwood, a climate researcher at Yale university, will tell the conference later today that warming of 4C or more this century looks "increasingly likely".
Bob Watson, a former head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and chief scientist at the environment department, has already warned that governments need to prepare for a 4C rise (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2008/aug/06/climatechange.scienceofclimatechange).
The 2007 report of the IPCC said that average temperatures could rise by up to 6C this century if no action were taken to curb greenhouse gas emissions. Many scientists say this could be an underestimate, because world emissions have grown faster than expected.
According to the 2006 Stern report, a rise of 4C would put between seven million and 300 million more people at risk of coastal flooding each year, there would be a 30-50% reduction in water availability in southern Africa and the Mediterranean, agricultural yields would decline by 15%-35% in Africa, and 20%-50% of animal and plant species would face extinction. Yesterday, scientists announced at the conference that a 4C rise would lead to the loss of 85% of the Amazon rainforest. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2009/mar/11/amazon-global-warming-trees)
A 5C rise would mean that major cities such as New York, London and Tokyo would be threatened by a rise in sea levels and increases in ocean acidity would severely disrupt marine ecosystems and fisheries. An increase of more than 5C — equivalent to the amount of warming that occurred between the last ice age and today — is, according to the Stern report, "likely to lead to major disruption and large-scale movement of population". It said the effects would be "catastrophic" and "far outside human experience".
...

Hah, what cracks me up is people who were screaming for GW legislation to help out our poor tourist industry (skiing) last year. Now we've got TONS of snow, but no customers thanks to the poopy economy. Now they're trying to get Gay marriage passed so we can boost the economy that way. It's funny these libs using the down economy to boost these agendas but none would jump to the rescue if it meant relaxing regulations and getting Gov't out of the way.

Freaking Insanity is the Hallmark of the AlGorist Cult. But notice that he is not offering any evidence that the temperature will climb 4-6degrees C in 91 years; his predictions are based solely on the speculation of if it warms that much. Of course he tosses in that someone else, Steven Sherwood, has said it is "likely." But also, he offers no evidence that his predictions are anything more than his opinion; they are certainly not founded in science and they totally ignore the multitude of positive effects that a warmer world would have for humans.
You have to look very closely at the words that these people use: "if," "could," "might..." Those words are caveats that make everything that follows meaningless. For example, it is equally meaningless to say "If the the global temperature falls 5 degrees by the end of the century, live would be very difficult and billions of lives could be in jeopardy."

I hate to be the guy on the outside looking in, but the economist is correct.
IF the temperature of the world increased by 6C (~10F) in less than 100 years it would almost certainly be a natural disaster of epic proportions.
I think we can all agree that the extra heat would move the optimal farming range drastically. Yes, sir, IF the temperature went up, the world will pay severely.

If the temperature went up 6C the earth would be a warmer wetter place with much less cimate fluctuation. More water circulating means more arrible land, more stable temperatures means longer growing seasons. It would not be a crisis at all. It would be a miracle.

100+ years of climate data vs. millions of years of climate.
Temperatures corresponding directly with solar activity.
Mars experiencing similar temperature patterns.
Computer models held up as science.
Unproven claims stated to be settled fact.
Skeptics targeted.
The whole bloody dogma is so transparent, yet held as provable as gravity.
1970's: Global cooling will destroy us all
1980's: The Ozone hole will destroy us all
1990's: The Ozone hole has always been there, but Co2 emissions will cause Global Warming that will destroy us all.
2000's: Forestation causes more warming than CO2, but Climate Change because of our progress will destroy us all.

The temperature here in Phoenix, AZ can swing ~30° in ONE DAY. Tonight's low is 53° and the high is 80° but nobody is going to die from that mild weather.
What difference would a crummy extra 10° make? It's GOING to get up to 115° this summer anyway, same as it does every summer.
I LIKE IT HOT. The record high temperature ever in Phoenix, AZ was 122° on June 26th, 1990. I'd love to see that nearly 20-year-old record fall. I remember that glorious day, it was almost like an undeclared holiday. That was totally fun. The airport shut down because jet airplanes aren't rated for temperatures over 120°. Hot air is thinner air and doesn't give the lift to airplane wings that cooler air does.
If we've got global warming killing us all, then why can't we beat that crummy 122° record high from 1990? TURN UP THE HEAT!! I don't live in the desert to chill out.

Ah, if it was an economist that made the assertions in the OP, then I know it has to be true. I always seek the opinions of economists when trying to determine the truth about global warming - just like I seek the advice of climatologists when it comes to making decisions about my investments.

what exactly is the problem? The earth has survived many periods hotter than even the predicted high.

This was the coldest winter since a record less than 10 years ago...10 years? I thought these wackos said we were all going to fry?!? I would have thought it would have been the coldest winter in the last 1000 years from what we hear from crazy Al (just give me more money) Gore.
I have a couple of questions...what about the global freezing scare in the 70's? What about those killer bees that were going to kill us all...still have not seen them and it is now 20 years and no bees when they were suppose to kill us within 5 years.
Is it just me or are they now calling it "climate change" instead of global warming...maybe because their conference in DC got snowed out last month caused them to change tactics.
Hey Al...we had much warmer temperatures when T-Rex was roaming the Earth even in Anartica...did T-rex drive an SUV?

India and China are so much more responsible for polution right now.
Global warming is a theory, anyway and NOT PROVEN AT ALL. Supposedly our footprint will only raise the temperature like 1 degree.
Just another way for Gov'ts to scam us out of money.
The earth has heated and cooled before. It's a normal cycle.
I do think we should stop poluting, but the US isn't the main culprit right now.
I'm sure it all fits in nicely with cap and trade.

Well duh.
IF the world gets hotter, things could go badly.
IF the world gets colder, things could go badly.
I just wanted to point out that this was an economist (STUDIES THE ECONOMY) who took the assumption that the earth warmed, and went from there.
He might as well have said "If an asteroid landed in Antartica..." and gone on from there...
And IF Liberals had any sense at all we would not even be discussing this topic...

Who cares about CO2 levels..what we really should be concerned about is that pesky Dihydrogenmonoxide..see my link!

I don't know what all the fuss is about. After this past winter (snow still on the ground) I am officially in favor of global warming. I am pumping as much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere as possible.
Bring the warmth on!

Global warming 'will be worse than expected' warns Stern
Economist says his 2006 groundbreaking report underestimated risk and accuses governments of not being ready for consequences of 6C temperature rise
Good for him. The Left is hanging in there with this canard. Let's not let a nasty little detail like the fact that there has not been any global warming since 1998 get in the way of a good government power grab.

Well, things got pretty nasty in the world during the last Little Ice Age.
Bring on the CO2, boys.

The problem is self-loathing liberals looking for yet another reason to trash the West and its successes. This gives these chicken-little kooks something to whine about when they are not busy killing babies, "marrying" homosexuals, and finding rights for terrorists.
