A good test in witnessing on how bad the economy and unemployment is, is by seeing the amount of people applying for basic blue collar civil service jobs.

Back in the recession of the early 1990`s, the Chicago Police Department was hiring new police officer recruits. There were over 40,000 documented applicants for 200 or so open positions. In 1997, there were roughly 7,000 applicants. In the early thru mid 2000`s, the averages were in the 2,000 applicant range.

There were over 1,000 applicants for 3 job openings at the Cook County building. Let`s see what the numbers are when city, state, federal government announces open testing for jobs. The majority of them will be overqualified.

Right now a government job is the best one you can get. The benefits are huge and job security is guaranteed with a democrat who wants to expand government, not contract it.

And get this - there's already a proposal to give federal workers a *raise* of at least 2 percent for 2010. That's on top of the 3.9 percent they got this year!

What is our government thinking, giving out raises while so many can't even find a job? Maybe just buying votes from a solid Democratic constituency?

The best test for me has been what is printed in the news. I understand what those huge numbers mean. It doesn't matter to me that there are 3,000 people applying for 30 jobs at Walmart or with the Police department, that's a huge disparity no matter how you cut it.
