So I got my first tattoos on Thursday, and it was friggin' awesome. I, like a lot of people, told myself for years "man, I want a tattoo" and I had a particular idea for about a year, but for some reason decided to finally get up and make an appointment earlier this week. I got "Freedom is the will to be responsible to ourselves," written in script around my arm like a band, and the Black Flag symbol tattooed on my shoulder above it. I had the symbol flipped to wave the same direction my US Flag patch was sewn onto my BDU's.

Anyone else have any number of tattoos, and if so, which ones mean the most to you?

I have quite a few tattoos. I got my first in 1985 while in Palma de Mallorca Spain, an island in the mediterranean. I was wasted after about a dozen rum and cokes and was thinking about a girl I had recently broke up with who I was in lust with at the time. My buddies and I came accross this tattoo place ran by a german guy who didn't speak english...we continued to party with him and I decided right then and there to get a tattoo. Since I was feeling all melancholy about my recent break up, I decided to get a tattoo of a rose with a bleeding heart on my right bicep (Ain't that funny). Its still there, but I would never remove it because it reminds of being young and one of many good times I've had in my life. It and all the other tattoos are part of who I am and my history.

Sorry, not a fan, art goes on walls, where I can take it down when I am sick of looking at it.

You know what they say about opinions. Who ask you? This isn't a thread about what your opinions on tattoss are.

Scarification is polular in some circles and can also enhance tattooing.

Real men collect scars :DI've already got an abundance of those, but none seem to come together to make up any cognitive art. :(

My next tattoo is going to be a U.S. Navy Senior Chief Anchor on my left forearm and I'm also planning to get some sort of skull and crossbones tattoo and a tattoo of the POW/MIA flag. My dilemma is where exactly to put them. I'm two or three tattoos ahead of the next one.

They are like Lays potato chips, you can't have just one.
The placement is as important as the art, thats smart to plan one or two ahead....

The subject is "first tattoos" and all opinions about tattoos, pro or con are legitimately on topic.

And my opinion is that there should be a law that says the first tattoo anyone gets must say:

"This tattoo was a really stupid idea; if I get a second one you may slap me on the back of the head - hard."

I know what folks mean by not having just one... I have always wanted to get a "minni mouse" tattoo on my left shoulder so that mickey wont be so lonely.

I also have a tongue piercing... is that painfull enough to warrant my man card? I just have to endure the occasional fellatio joke.

I have both my arms done, half sleeves on both.Nice, I definitely don't see myself getting too elaborate, the ones I get were pretty mild. What designs are your half-sleeves?

On my left arm I have nautica stars in a wind pattern that wraps around my entire arm from shoulder to elbow, on my right arm I have from shoulder to elbow, wrapped all the way around, a mix of wind/fire/wings/and main body/head of a pheonix.

I don't have any tattoos. I don't even have the level of commitment it takes to subscribe to the Columbia House.

I do remember the story of "Matey" though.

Serving on the USS Boone FFG-28 (yep this is a sea story) we stopped off in the port of Malaga, Spain on the southern tip of Europe. A British ship was there as well, and since they kind of spoke English we naturally migrated to the Brit sailors and got to buying "rounds".

Now, the Brit sailors called us "Yankees" which doesn't mean much to me or probably most any American kid, but to "Matey" he was from Alabama and calling an Alabama kid a "Yankee" is apparently a dire insult that you just don't do.

So, the Brits apologized profusely to "Matey" and bought him drinks... many, many drinks. So many drinks that when they suggested he get a tattoo, he thought it was a grand idea.

Drunk off his ass, probably passed out, "Matey" got a tattoo of a British Flag on his back. Hail to the Queen, baby. He woke up the next day feeling like he got burned, and yeah, he got burned all right.

Poor "Matey". He's got that monkey on his back forever.
