[Personal childish rant on!]

So, I've wanted Ann Coulter's lastest book for like forever (on audiobooks) I seldom have time to sit down and just read a book. I use audiobooks. But I've never purchaced a download audio book before.

Anyway, Amazon had the book abridged. I HATE abridged audio books. I don't want the Reader's Digest version , I want the BOOK.

So, Itunes had the unabridged version of Ann Coulter's book. First place I saw it an unabridged version EVER.

I don't own a Ipod, but I know you can burn CDs from Itunes. So I figured I would buy it and simply burn CDs to listen to in the car.

What could go wrong, right?

Twenty three bucks later I discover, I can burn CDs, BUT they won't play in the car. They are in a M4b format which my car CD player doesn't recognize. My mp3 converter won't convert them.

In short, I'm STUCK with an audio book I CAN'T USE.

Yes, I know I was stupid. I am NOT a computer person, but I still feel thoroughly ripped off. The audio book I've wanted forever and it sits on my computer in Itunes like a freaking white elephant laughing at my newbienees about audio formats.

This is your fault Steve Jobs. For being so greedy you make your Itunes so you are forced to buy your overpriced products to use it.

Harrumph!

[personal childish rant off] You may all now proceed to laugh at my newbieness.

Um, I don't have that kind of money. I might as well just buy an Ipod. I don't have that kind of money.

(sigh)

Have you tried some different burning software? I don't understand how it ended up in that format. (I don't use Itunes).

If that fails, see if Winamp can play it and configure the wave output plugin. That's how I used to convert MP3's to a burnable format back before we had decent software that would do all that for me.

Hey Sam,

I got a $25 iTunes Gift Certificate for Christmas and since I don't own an iPod (I hate Apples proprietary BS) so I converted the files using this tutorial:

http://askbobrankin.com/convert_itunes_to_mp3_format.html

My car CD player can play MP3 files and if yours is a recent model it can too. If not, Windows Media Player can convert it to a normal CD for you. Feel free to let me know if you have any trouble.

If you are on Windows Vista..
Play the iTunes file on your PC
Use the Windows Vista Sound Recorder to record it.
Convert the .wav file to MP3
Burn to disk for your car player.

Go to your advanced settings for iTunes. You can choose the options for uploading music/audiobooks onto your computer. I set the default to mp3 instead of whatever else they had. You can then select the default for burning. However, if you choose mp3, it has a problem if you have a lot of them that you burn to the CD, it can have a problem.

I do similar things with my audiobooks. Its easier, and safer for the originals, to burn a copy of it and condense it down.

Try opening the M4b files in Goldwave (free download)...
http://www.goldwave.com/release.php

Then once open you can save as MP3 files or just about any other format, it works for almost every audio format I have tried. I even use it to make MP3s from sites like youtube etc.

And yes I agree, Steve Jobs does suck. I can't believe he can get people to pay more than double for a PC running a glorified version of Linux. Heck, Macs are slower than PCs for the simple fact you can't overclock them. Ever since the release of the Core2 Duo, people have been pushing their processors well over 3ghz air cooled with no heat or stability issues. AMD even released software to overclock their chips from within Windows, so it is not something that is necessarily discouraged by processor designers.

The following video sums up Mac Fanboism beautifully...

what kind of CD did you burn? there are different types of cd's you can burn in iTunes.

when you burn the CD make sure you select "Audio CD" NOT "Mp3". Depending on what version of iTunes you have this selection will either be under the Advanced tab in the Preferences (or options) menu, or in the box that appears after you click Burn CD.

Burning an Audio CD insures the content will be compatible on any CD player.

Steve Jobs doesn't suck, you just don't know how to use his product.

Opened my lap top on my last flight, was all set to watch a copy of the latest Heroes on it and I got, sorry this computer is not authorized to play this video. I have reached my limit of five authorized itunes computers, which is fine but why the heck did it let me buy it and download it without mentioning it in the first place? Now I have to go look up how I can deauthorize some of my defunct old computers or something, bit of a hassle.

Burn to disk for your car player.

The place Throw Cop sent me to worked.

I thought I couldn't burn it to CD, that would play in the car. Turns out Itunes was burning them as data CDs. I had to change a setting on Itunes (I'm a newb when it comes to Itunes.).

The audio book came in two files.

When I separated the files into separate play lists, and changed the settings on how to burn them to CDs it worked like a charm. They burned right to CD.

Then I just put the CDs back into Itunes and told Itunes to convert them to mp3s.

Sounds like a lot of work (and it is a bit. Five CDs just for one side, and now I have to wait until I buy some more CDs. I only have four left and I know I'll seed more of that for side two).

But it was worth it.

I now have the whole first file (five + hours) on my mp3 player and listening to it happily.

Heh.

I had that problem with Netflix. You can watch movies on your computer from there. But, my husband was having trouble loading Vista on my computer. He loaded it three times before it would take.

Well netflix interpreted it as my having three computers and I got a message I was only "authorized" to have netflix on four computers.

I had to call them and get that fixed. It's all okay now though.

BTW, thanks everyone for your help.

I really appreciate it. Even my husband (and he fixes and runs computers for a living) Couldn't figure out how to fix the problem.

You guys were great!

Do you have an MP3 player? Put it on that, and then use one of those FM transmitters to listen to your MP3 player over the car radio. Been doing that for a number of years and it works great.
