Please. Don't encourage the cockiness of the typical mall cop.
I would only report someone if there were no other handicapped spots. Even then, I can't imagine I'd be bothered to flag someone down.

I don't mind a couple handicapped spots in front of the entrances, but it's getting out of hand. A new super-convenience store has half the spaces in front reserved for the handicapped, and my local Wal-Mart has about 40-50 spaces cordoned off. There aren't even that many handicapped in the town I live in. Plus, it's not too hard to get a permit. Doesn't have to be a physical handicap, you can get one for stress. STRESS! Yeah, I'm stressed out having to hire a sherpa to bring my groceries out to the hinterlands where my car is parked, gimme a handicap permit, Doc.

The god damn spaces are one too many. It doesn't matter where I go, there is always 5 to 6 of these spaces, and rarely even one is taken. They are always empty. I think 2 or 3 is reasonable. Don't tell that to these nut-cases out here in California though. I had to look at 5 or 6 myself while I had to park at the other end of the 1/4 mile parking lot with my pregnant wife. What a ****ing joke.
Ever wonder why they don't offer these spots to pregnant women? I'll tell yuh why, because These bottomfeeders want to have the spaces open so that they can get the revenue from idiots like this guy. ;) It's all about money, just like everything else in this messed up, once great Country that is now ruled by gutless, corrupt scoundrels.
Anyone think I am wrong? Should pregnant women be allowed to use the other Handicap spaces that are almost always empty? Of course they should be allowed. And they should not have to purchase a pass either. A signed doctors note from let's say maybe 4 months pregnant, would be reasonable or alteast a start for the debate. This is just another example of morons making important decisions for the masses of stupid sheople. I'll tell yuh what, I am going to blow this subject of Pregnant women deserving the use of these handicapped spaces up in a personal blog. ~BH

I don't have specific data to back this up, but I'd bet that if there are excessive handicap spots in front of a store, I'd bet that there was the fear of an ADA lawsuit behind it. One of the noxious byproducts of the 1990 Americans With Disabilities Act is that it created more opportunities for frivilous lawsuits.
As for making traffic fines proportionate to their wealth/income, don't give the Obama administration any ideas. In Finland, the amount of the traffic offense is tied to their income. In 2002, a Nokia executive was fined the equivalent of $103,000 for speeding. (Yes, it was speeding a lot over the limit, but still...)

I had a brother that was in a wheelchair. It seemed like everytime he went to the store the handicap spaces were taken up by people who really didn't need them. Some of them only put the handicap sign up once they pulled into the space. Most don't have the sign on their license plate. I know one person who got the sign to hang on the rearview mirror when she had a broken leg. That was two years ago. She still hangs it up just to get a good parking space.

I like that on the military bases (commisary and PX) there are parking spots for pregnant women and new moms. I loved that when I was 9 months pregnant, I didn't have to waddle from the back of the parking lot.
I still get great parking on post. I have my father in law's truck with a CSM sticker. Sergeant Majors and family with stickers get front row parking.
Walmart is a different story. Won't go there anymore and when I have to, I drive around for 10 minutes looking for a spot! I can't carry my 25lb kid from the back parking spot and she doesn't want to walk that far.

Yes of course, I've heard enough whining here about disabled spots not being taken and how you're all angry at having to park a bit further away, well boo hoo. What about the poor disabled guy who can't park near the door because of inconsiderate people flouting the law...
As for the 'outrage' being caused by my suggestion that someone on over a hundred grand a week paying more for arrogantly dismissing the law, well maybe there should be a few points on their license when they're caught. See how these rich people like it when after an accumulation of points they're banned for a while...

Even though I am a cripple I still feel guilt at times about using handicapped parking, especially when lots are full at the holidays.
I worry that someone even more handicapped than I am might get left out.
I don't believe having wealthier people pay larger fines because of their income is appropriate.
However I do believe the frequency of their parking indiscretions should weigh heavily on how they are dealt with on an ongoing basis.
When I lived in Massachusetts they had a little device they employed against people with a large number of unpaid tickets called the "Denver Boot".
Once that was applied to a person's vehicle it got their attention.
It was also cheaper and easier than towing.
So I would not object to an escalating fine system for handicap parking spot scofflaws.
For example...
1st time $50
2nd time $100
3rd time they get caught they get the boot and are charged $150 fine and $350 boot removal fee.
Etc. Etc.
In Illinois the state legislature not too long back raised the fine to $250 and allows for municipalities to fine at $350 for each offense.

Well clearly there are degrees of disability, some disabled people are more disabled than others but the parking bays are specifically for DISABLED people, you shouldn't feel guilty about using the bays that are SPECIFICALLY for you...
So any able bodied person using the bay raises my hackles, but to me a Premiership footballer who is more able bodied than virtually anyone REALLY is the limit...

one one hand if a rich person gets a fine of $300 what does he care.
if i do the same thing and get a fine it would be a big deal to me.
so if the reason of a fine is to punish then the rich are not punished.
HOWEVER! the reason i am against a sliding scale for fines is: how would a person with no income be fined? Would they just get away with it?

One day after I parked, and jumped out of the car, I heard a snotty voice say ''Yer not supposed to park there''/ I just opened the trunk and pulled out the wheelchair. rolled around to the passenger side of the car, and got MoM out...

Although you have given an example of someone that may not need the handicapped placard, what in the world makes you think that only putting up the handicapped placard once one is pulled into the space has anything to do with, well, anything? Handicapped persons are only allowed two vehicles with handicapped plates. My husband and I have two vehicles, both of which he drives from time to time. But when he drives his business car, or is in a vehicle with someone else, or rents a car, his handicap does not magically go away (i.e., the part of his foot that has been amputated does not reappear). And he ONLY puts the placard up once he has pulled into the handicapped parking space -- to do it before obstructs the vision of the driver.

Yup. Walking in from the outer 40 when you're carrying twins isn't easy. "Pregnant parking" hadn't been invented yet when I was carrying my 14 year olds. We got our first spots here when they were about 6 months old.
I sure would have appreciated the pregnant parking when I was expecting. Twins are a heavy load and hard on the back.

Breeder Bays would be a more appropriate name from what I have witnessed, litters of crumb crunchers that pile out of vehicles after the "nother bun in the oven mothers", at Malls, Wally Worlds, McDonald's, and other places.
A store designating close in parking spaces for the pregnant is a good PR move but I wouldn't want to see it made law to require them.
I can certainly appreciate the difficulty of getting around with an aching back, although not because I was carrying twins, but getting preferred parking spots for a condition of choice (with extreme exceptions) is crazy.
I have been crippled from birth, not crippled until birth. :D

I see a few of them around here, but there are massive quantities of handicapped stalls.
Btw, even if your husband is 'in town' doesn't mean that he's at the grocery store with you. Women do a lot of things alone.
First pregnancy, no big deal. Worked up until three weeks before my due date, full load of patients and didn't ask for help. Now with number two, I was 40 years old, the back wasn't happy, and he rode so low that it was painful to walk any distance, let alone deal with the contractions that brought on.
I still went grocery shopping but pushing that pig of a cart to the south 40 was basically miserable. Couldn't walk the mall during Christmas, I did that once and barely made it through. Ended up using Amazon a lot. Would have given my left elbow for a closer spot.
I think that the reason why CA doesn't have them is because of limited land for any sort of use in urban areas, as opposed to here in the midwest. One thing that MO has is SPACE. And the land isn't as pricey.
Just a guess.

CA just needs to get rid of that "compact car" parking up front and replace it with spots for the pregnant women. I wasn't horribly miserable until I was 9 months pregnant and the three weeks she decided she didn't want to come just yet.
