I have Asperger Syndrome.
It's a mild form of autism. People with AS have average to above average but lack social skills and other issues.
Here is more info on it:

That has got to be difficult. I am a bar tender, and I have a customer who comes in about once a week who tells me he has the same condition. He doesn’t seem to have any concept of personal space and has a history of making other customers uncomfortable – particularly women. He’s asked me to place my hand on his shoulder and ask him if he “needs anything” as a signal that he’s not behaving appropriately.
Is there any treatment for the condition? Is the condition evidence that human social behavior is rooted – at least in part – in our physical self? What is the current understanding of the cause for AS?

Not me personally but my daughter has Angelman Syndrome.
21 years ago when she was born I didn't think I would still be bathing her, feeding her, dressing her and changing her diaper.
But as long as we are physically able to care for her at home my wife and I won't put her in a residential facility.

I'm not sure what kind of treatment options there are other than programs to help those with AS learn proper social skills and other areas.
As far as the cause of AS, its toss up. Autism runs on my father side of the family. We belive both my dad and grandfather had AS. My broher is autisic so is one of my cousin. Another cousin was also dianosed with AS which is a rarity since she is a woman and most women/girls who have AS do not have anyoneelse in the extended family with autism/asperger, if I remember correctly.
Asperger is both a blessing and a curse.
Ask anyone who works with kids with asperger and they will tell you how intellengent they are.
For example, when I was tested for reading in 7th grade, they found I could read well into college level.
There are alot of famous people who either has AS or speculated to have it.
Dan Akroyd has it. Bll Gates is rumored to have it. Also alot of experts speculate Albert Einstein might of had it.

My cousin also has it. The only one I am aware of in my family. Remus I am not sure how it is diagnosed. He is 43 and was not diagnosed until later in life. Do you happened to know what the criteria is for diagnosis?

I'm certian 100 percent what the criteria is for the diagnosis.
I was diagnosed when I was 12 years old. That time, AS wasn't widely known. I was taken to someolne who specialized in autism and that was how they found I had it.

As my signature line says, we're all facing struggles. It's the learning to live a good life in spite of them that makes us who we are. I spent most of my earlier life, from 16-30, in a drunken, self-indulgent, apathetic haze.
I wake up every morning wishing I could turn the clock back and un-hurt all those people.

Your signature is spot-on. Many years ago I also struggled with alcohol which I later replaced with horribly addictive pain killers. I've been clean for a long time but it's an on-going battle every single day of my life.
People born with problems like AS have my deepest respect. Keep up the good fight.

I have a friend who is addicted to pain killers...she is so tired of using them but fears the side effects of the with drawal. Are there ways to get someone off painkillers with little or no side effects?

There are ways to lessen the pain of withdrawal but you must first admit your problem to a trustworthy doctor. It strikes me as a balance --- whatever fulfillment you got from the habit must be paid back when you give it up. I don't believe there is a way to overcome any addiction without facing side-effects, especially not pain killers. I know people who have tried to ween themselves off but I've not seen it work. These devils can sink a pleasure hook into your brain that is nearly impossible to remove by yourself.
Again, my only recommendation is to find a good doctor you trust.

I think that finally admitting that she has a problem was a big step and I will encourage her to find a new Dr. She is beginning to see that the one she has does nothing more than push these pills and she even told him that she feared she was addicted to the meds.

I have an older relative who has taken pain killers for many years due to real, chronic pain. In her case, any potential addiction seems secondary to living with the pain. I don't mean to dismiss the benefit these drugs carry for improving the quality of life if the alternative is continuous, debilitating pain.

Yeah, it has weakened some over the years, due to having to do the work of two eyes, that's the reason I wear glasses. The left lens is just a display lens. Glasses stopped helping that eye about 12 years ago.
Most people don't know until I tell them because my left eye still looks normal, responds to light and such, I just can't see for **** out of it.

She does suffer from severe chronic pain...I think that she has heard so many bad things about pain killers she is afraid that she is an addict.
Thank you for talking to me though as I believe that she truly needs to find a better Dr. One who is willing to discuss her concerns and help her find treatment/drugs that will help her with this!

I also suffer from severe chronic pain and take strong pain killers. I think she should see a pain management speicalist. A normal doctor doesn't see that many people in severe chronic pain while a pain management speicalist see's them every day.
A pain management speicalist may also be able to suggest things besides drugs to help cope with the pain. She may not be able to get off pain killers but she may be able to take less.

We are all different, in one way or another. Whether a person has a physical infirmity etc. or not, that doesn't make them any more "special," or anymore different than anyone else.
To compare ourselves to one another, is to drop water on the flame of our being.

Well having Aspergers gave me the abilities such being able to read college level when I was in 7th grade, being able to think outside the box, and other areas.
It does come with alot of adversities especially when it comes to social situations. But the blessings far outweigh the bad.

Agreed.
If I could take medicine to rid myself of Aspergers, I wouldnt do it.
The very thought feels similar to suicide of the person I am.
No, its better to merely learn to manage it.

What makes you different
I was born tounge tied, all the way out to the end of my tounge. I did not talk until I was six years old, and then only with a stutter so bad that it took all day to say four words. To this day I can not pronounce certain words (with the st or th sounds) and by the time I can think of the words to use, the conversation has already by-passed the thought.
Most of my communication is via typing, and the internet was and is a god send to me.
I have always had to have a "front" person to make deals and in business it was a pain in the rear end. I was lucky enough to hire an executive secretary that was (and is) a real gem. Her pay check reflected it too, I paid her more than I paid myself, because she was worth it.
