The calender ends December 21, 2012.
It was an interesting show that did give me a moment of pause considering the political climate of the world right now.

I saw that too - I couldn't help but think that perhaps the guy that made the calendar wrapped up work one day getting so far as December 21, 2012 and was eaten by a jaguar on the way home that night.
Seems as plausible an explanation as anything else they talked about on that show.

It's only fiction until the time it becomes true just like a theory is only a theory until the fact is revealed.

If we all believed everything said about the end of the world, we should have been gone long before now. How many times do we get some nutball prediction from some nutjob guy or group that says "The end of the world is coming". Ok, well wake me when it is over.
Since I am not God, I don't go to places that I shouldn't stray. He decides when enough is enough. Frankly 2012 if things keep getting any worse than they are, might be it.
Then again, chances are it most likely won't be it. I guess we just wait until 12/22/12 and see. We all wake up and sign on here, then we know the Mayan calendar was wrong.
As for me I won't be losing any sleep over it anytime soon.

The Mayan calendar is based on the Galactic alighment of the winter solstice sun with the center of the Milky Way Galaxy. The alignment happens in 2012. It's a 26,000 year time cycle.
The calendar on my wall only goes to December 31st of this year. My God, it's the end!

I also watched the show...love History Channel...but was not able to finish watching it....hate it when that happens. It was very interesting and brought up some good points.
Yeah know what impressed me most? An ancient culture with the ability to calendar out 26,000 years just by looking up into the sky! I can find the big and little dipper...but that's about it..lol Very impressive...enough so that it gave me pause to really take in the points I did hear.
As I said..interesting stuff...
If memory serves..did they not also find correlating information in the Middle East...a time tables of sorts that lined up perfectly with the Mayan calender? I think it was the show on the Sodom and Gomorrah...but I could be mistaken. If true..that two ancient civs that were able to chart the years by the stars....fairly incredible stuff imo.

...(think he is talking about Planet X) is a marvelous work of fiction. Oh yes, yes, there is no such thing as Planet Nimburu or whatever they say. It's just fiction, and they cite sources who cite NASA sources, they don't cite NASA, check the websites, you'll see. And it is all related to this "Doomsday" predictions of the year 2012. Yes, that is what you are getting at, it's behind your question isn't it?
Yes, you want to know if the world is going to end on December 21, 2012. Because the same website that tells you about Planet X, this secret planet that will, has a strongly eliptical orbit that will come into our zone in 2012 and knock earth off it's axis, combined with, on December 21st, 2012, the center of the galexey, the sun and the earth will come into perfect alignment and the excess gravity will also tear the earth off it's axis and it will be the end of the world as we know it. This is what these webpages will tell you.
Turns out if you go to December 21st and look at the star charts, its true! The center of the galexey, the sun and the earth will come into perfect alignment, it will, its true. What the site does not tell you is that, that happens every year on December 21st. They left that out of the account.
So it's a fine work of fiction, earth will be here before, during and after 2012. I will add that the movie, 2012, that is being marketed right now, that is going to come out in 2012, they want you to do all the homework for the movie so they say "just google it", and if you google 2012 its filled with thousands of webpages on doomsday written by people who, didn't take enough science in school.

The world is coming to an end - I think current estimates are about 5 billion years, but that's from memory and I may not be remembering that exactly right. And even the current estimate is wrong; the fact remains that the world, and the sun and the other planets in out solar system, and our galaxy for that matter will all be gone. Chances are good that our species will not be around to see it happen though.
There is no good reason to believe that the ancient Mayans had any special knowledge on the extinction of the planet.

In September 2012 public discontent will come to a head after four years of forced socialism causing the country to spiral into despair and talk of revolution will peak. Obama will declare martial law and suspend the November elections and his full dicatorship will ensue.
There will be months of upheaval and chaos, patriotic citizens nationwide will form militias and arm themselves with guns and weapons that were carefully cached during Obama's gun ban. The military will split into factions, with some remaining loyal to the dictatorship but a large percentage siding with the militia.
In early December, Obama will be pinned down and baracade himself in the Presidential bunker under the White House. In a last act of desparation, December 21, 2012, he will launch every nuclear missile in the United States' arsenal at targets worldwide. All nuclear nations will launch retaliatory strikes at the U.S. and, as a result, the destruction of Earth will occur.

Might this be a boy who cried wolf scenario AGAIN? It's amazing the more info that gets on the internet and in the drive by media the more we start to believe.
Here are some hoaxes over time (that I can remember) that nearly left American's in a panic (in no particular order):
1. Nuclear fallout shelters (A.K.A air raid shelters to protect Americans from nuclear bombing)
2. The religious fanatics expecting Christ's return in 2000.
3. Y2K- remember the fear it generated? Cartoons were written about it. The dried food industry and bottled water industry saw a boom. Doomsayers abounded. But in the end, no planes fell, no one died, the electric grid stayed up, we still had bank records...
4. We only use 10% of our brains... well being that some American's allow media scare tactics and websites to alter their judgment and leave them running scared, that might actually be true.
5. Cell phones cause brain damage and apparently when you crack an egg between 2 cellphone you can fry it! AMAZING!
6. In 1999 the Great King of Terror will come from the sky. Some people think the great terror in the sky was 9/11. But remember that was a "planned" attack. We create out own vulnerabilities from the BS we believe in our media and terrorists take advantage of our naivete.
7. Pope John XXIII predicted in 1962 that Christ would appear in the sky over New York City. Jesus was expected to announce the creation of a 1000-year paradise.
8. Eating beef will cause cancer and heart disease, same for eggs. So guess what? Beef and egg sales went down.
9. Beef provides your body with proper essential nutrients and is only linked to cancer and heart disease when thrown between a sesame seed bun or eaten with a pound of potatoes slathered in butter and sour cream or a super sized french fry, an apple pie, AND a milkshake 3 meals a day, 7 days a week! Wait... that's actually true.
There are at least 40 end of the World predictions before the year 2000 alone! Things like Edgar Cayce predicting that a cosmic storm will hit the earth. Winds of 1,000 miles per hour and tremendous swings in temperature will kill millions.
Yes, everyone should entrust themselves in the MAYAN calendar that we've been using for thousands of years. COME ON! Since when do we use a Mayan calendar??? Did we stop using the Gregorian calendar at some point and nobody told me??? Actually, the world ends at the end of February next year. That's when my Barnes & Noble calendar with the puppy dogs on it runs out.

Replace global temperature with galactic alignment and 1800's with the 12-1400's.
