Wish me luck, I am running for Township Clerk in the April elections. I live in a strong Dem area and I am already an elected Republican Precinct Committeewoman. The woman I am running against thought she already had the job locked in. When the dems. found out that I was running against her, they tried to get our caucus thrown out. Thank goodness our democrat County Clerk likes me. She ruled in my favor and I am on the ballot. My opponent is well know, but not all favorable. I am well liked by a lot of dems in my area. We will see if people will vote for qualifications or straight party lines.

Thank you John. I have been involved for a while. I have been elected Precinct Committeewoman 3 times. I have been the County Coordinator for a number of local, state-wide and national candidates. I am looking forward to the campaigning. I have almost 2300 registered voters in my Township. That is a pretty good number for around here. A friend of mine was nominated for Supervisor of another Township. He has 120 registered voters and it a Republican area of the county. He is a shoe-in.

Years ago I was real active in local Republican politics, those phone calls at all hours seven days a week, campaigning, elbow rubbing with people I did not have anything in common with and other things got old it takes a strong will to be in politics, lol. imho at least.

I wish that Illinois would go to an open primary. The way it is now is just wrong. I may only have 25-30 people in my precinct pull a Republican ballot during the primary, but a couple hundred Republican votes in the general. People know they will pay for pulling that R ballot.

Naw, I am a "redneck conservative". But I am a conservative that knows how to cook. ;) I take a full meal and snacks up to all the election judges in our polling place every election. That has earned me a great deal of respect and liking by a lot of dems in our area. Not the reason I do it, but it is nice. No one had done this before me and all the judges really appreciate it, since they cannot leave to get food for themselves. They have to be there around 5 a.m. so it is a hassle for them to drag food up there themselves. I figure it is the least I can do for them.

Closed primaries are a bad deal IMO. Some people register in the party they are opposed to just so the weakest candidate will make it to the general election.

Where I live, PCOs get elected in the primary. I don't know if that is a universal situation

I got re-elected as a Republican PCO with 99 votes last year.
The Democrat PCO in our precinct got over 500 votes.

Same here. Committeemen/women are elected in the primaries, every two years. This past election I think that I did get more votes than the dem., simply because she was a write-in candidate and I was actually on the ballot. Funny thing is, this is the same person I am running against for Township Clerk.

Kinda like a rematch. It sounds like you have a little bit more fame going into the campaign than your opponent has.

I like your odds. If I was in Vegas, I would call you a 7-5 favorite

Well only 9 days left until the elections. I have my yard signs and campaign lit. I had an open house today and it went well. This week I will be hitting the pavement and knocking on door. I will also have an ad run in the local paper this week. I could use all the prayers you can muster and all the good vibes you can thrown this way.

Well election day is here! Things are looking as good as they can for a Republican running in a den of Democrats. I know that at least half of the dem judges working in the two precinct in my town voted for me.

I took a meal up to ALL the judges here, (6 judges in the 2 precincts that vote at city hall) as I have EVERY election for the past five years, and the stuff has started already. The other candidates have been trying to pull some stuff that is not kosher. Luckily the Election Judges (both Republican and Democrats) put a stop to it. I look for it to get worse before they finally give up trying to pull this stuff.

Say a prayer for me if you would. It is going to be a loooooonnnnnngggg day.

Well the votes have been counted.........

The bad news is, I lost.
The good news is, I accomplished what I set out to do. I did get 35% of the vote, and for a Republican in this area that's pretty good. Now my name is out there and I will have a better shot at the next go round.
I did manage to win one of the five precincts. And I did get 213 votes, even though there are only 128 registered Republicans. That mean that even if every Republican voted, I still got 85 Democrats to vote for me. I am looking forward to seeing the voter rolls for this election. I am willing to bet that not every Republican got out to vote and that I received a lot more Democrat votes that just 85. We only had a 31% voter turnout, so more than likely I got at least 150 Democrats to vote for me. I am happy with that start.
The other good news, the 1% County Sales Tax proposal went down in flames.
Thanks everyone for your prayers and well wishes.

Not to demean the position, but all that political maneuvering for a Township Clerk nomination? What would a republican do differently in that position than a democrat? Curious.

Around here, no one really cares if a Democrat or Republican runs for anything less than the State Legislature. We all know each other and who's best for the job. I suspect it will be similar in your area. Good luck.

Curtis, a couple of things. 1. You have to understand, people would vote for Satan in this county, especially in this town, as long as he has a (D) next to his name. This county is refered to by those in Springfield as "Little Cook County". There has been political mayhem going on here for the past couple of decades. The Republicans are trying to get things cleaned up, but it is an uphill battle to say the least since EVERY county position in the court house is held by a Democrat and only one mayor in the entire county is a Republican. Just to give you an example; our state's attorney is a Democrat. In one town in the county, the ELECTED mayor hired himself as the chief of police. This is illegal. An elected officer can not receive a paycheck from the same entity that they are elected in. The state's attorney won't do anything about it. My opponent is planning on doing the same thing. She plans on being the ELECTED township clerk and still act as the secretary and get paid for doing both jobs. She will work the same hours and get paid twice for the same hours, one check as the clerk and one as the secretary. Illegal, but nothing will get done about it.

2. In the town and township that I live in, EVERY elected office is held by a Democrat. EVERY ONE OF THEM. As far as the township goes, the same 4 guys have been the trustees for over 20 years, some going back 40. No Republican has even dared to run against any of them for decades. No Republican has run for the office that I did for decades. They have their little clic and do not want anyone else involved nor will they allow it.

3. Yesterday, I had Democrats telling me that they voted for me and that they could not believe anyone voted for my opponent. She has been arrested for shoplifting and has been fired for stealing. She has a criminal record for pete's sake. It is public record and is publicly know, but it doesn't matter. She is a Democrat and part of the township clic. They also told me that a lot of people didn't know that I was me. They know ME, they know MY FACE, but they do not know MY NAME. Those who do KNOW ME and my name, voted for me. Plain and simple. I am going to run again. It may be for the same position, it may not. But I do know that in the next couple of years I will be at every city council meeting, every township meeting, and every county board meeting I can get to. It is hard though, since they do not advertise when some of these meetings are (they do not want any "outsiders" there, you see) in the paper.

4. They were cheating on election day. Thankfully, the election judges in my town, where two of the five precincts votes, stood their ground and would not allow it. The other 3 did allow it. My opponent was up at the polls, in the faces of the election judges demanding that they allow her to do what she was trying to do. They wouldn't. This same crap has been going on for years. It's the way "it has always been done". It is illegal, period, and it is not going to stop until people are arrested and fines are imposed and people are barred from being election judges and from running for office when they break the rules.

Thanks for your well wishes, but I lost. I will save them up for the next time I run though.

Thanks Bella. I am not down at all. I don't think people understand what I have done. I am proud of what I have accomplished. I got a lot of Democrats to vote for me. I kept the elections clean in my town. This will not be the last time my name will be on a ballot. I am planning on running again, to the dismay of the powers that be in my area.
