View Full Version : My Grandson

Ok, maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit here...
My 3 year old grandson is scheduled for surgery. Seems his tonsils and adenoids are so enlarged that they're causing him problems although they aren't infected.
Recently he's been snoring and waking up frequently throughout the night; I thought he was just having problems with a stuffy nose, it never occurred to me that this could be the problem. He's also started having some issues with eating, coughing frequently, poor appetite. :(
Turns out his tonsils are HUGE, causing him some serious issues with eating and sleeping.
She's co-sleeping to monitor for any problems. Needless to say, she isn't sleeping that well now either.
Hooboy.
I pray this doesn't worsen until they can do the surgery, and of course I pray the surgery goes well.
I also worry because after having surgery for ear tubes, he awoke from anesthesia in a pure terror. That's the only way I can describe it. Screaming and disoriented for hours afterward. The PACU nurse said that some children react to the anesthesia that way, but it scared my daughter half to death too. It was horrible to watch; nothing we did consoled him. I pray there is something they can do this time to reduce the chances of that happening again.
Perhaps I should have waited a while before posting this, but it's weighing heavily on my mind since I found out about all of this. I ask too for prayers that he remain healthy prior to the surgery, as they have stated it will be canceled if he gets sick and runs any fevers.

My 3 year old grandson is scheduled for surgery 3/18. Seems his tonsils and adenoids are so enlarged that they're causing sleep apnea. What the hell???
Recently he's been snoring and waking up frequently throughout the night; I thought he was just having problems with a stuffy nose, it never occurred to me that he was having sleep apnea. He's also started having some issues with eating, coughing frequently, poor appetite. :(
Daughter checked his throat, and noticed his tonsils were HUGE (nearly touching in the middle, but he wasn't sick). Whisked him off to the ped, then the ENT who scheduled the earliest surgery possible---but still well over a month away.
She's co-sleeping to monitor for any problems. Needless to say, she isn't sleeping that well now either.

Peace to your spirit EG, and I pray that your grandson has pefect health throughout his entire life.
This very thing happened to my nephew, and now he is better than ever, no more problems. Everything will be better afer the surgery. I will pray for him and you

Thanks, Rhonda. I know that after the surgery he'll do so much better. All these 'head-colds' and such I blamed on him being at daycare... now I wonder how much of it was this problem?

My oldest daughter went through the same thing. Emma, when she woke up after her surgery...she was a new person. I couldn't believe the change and wished that we had done it sooner but we just didn't know. My prayer is that it goes as well for your grandchild and that very soon you will be posting the great success! Lord, please hear my prayer.

Thanks and thanks all.
I'm just nervous, I suppose. A little bit of knowledge and all that...
He's been sick (what we thought were head colds and sinus problems) about once a month. We just figured it was because of him being in daycare. I'm sure that's the biggest part of it, but I wonder now how much was exacerbated by the tonsil/adenoids.

Thanks all. Back from the surgery center, and he did very well. He did worsen over the last month, to the point he was snoring while awake.
With the ear tubes, the anesthesiologist had two nurses hold his arms and legs while the doc held the mask over his face. Needless to say, daughter and child were both nearly hysterical. And then he woke up in a terror as I described above.
This time, different anesthesiologist. He came in and sat with him, played a bit, talked to him instead of over him. I told him about the issues before; he was peeved, and said that the reason behind the terror/confusion after awakening was using the same gas they use to induce sleep throughout the entire procedure--- which he never does. And he said he never places a mask on a child until they're asleep. He simply blows the gas and O2 toward their face and lets them slowly go to sleep. He also said he'd give him some IV pain med before bringing him out to recovery area.
Daughter went back as before to be with him until he was under, and came out much calmer. After the surgery he sobbed a little, but not much.
Right now he's watching The Spongebob, and eating some jello.
All in all this was a far better experience, for Mom and son. I'm grateful we got the doc we did; that made all the difference in the world.

Thank the LORD of all Grace and Hope! For a "small mercy" this was NOT. Children should NEVER be traumatized like that -- not even when the end result is good intentioned. That's an anesthesiologist who needs a letter of commendation in his official file!

I thought you probably would, for you understand the meaning of the word "honor."
I'm just glad the major hurt-to-fix is over and pray it does the job, no further intervention needed.
Children just shouldn't hurt like this. When they do, it's proof the world is all topsy-turvey, inside out, twisted, and bent to hell and gone, IMO.
