I reside in TX and have been working in CA for the last 6 months.
Of course it is tax season, and in going through my forms and preparing my taxes, I notice that CA wants to use my entire federal AGI to base their taxation on, when less than 50% of my income came from that source.

Still digging through the details of 540NR, but sheesh... CA wants their cut.

Yep. I was stationed in California when I was in the Navy, but never a resident. I was protected from the California Franchise Tax Board by the Soldier and Sailor's Relief Act.

But it still didn't stop them from threatening to prosecute me for non-payment of California state income tax.

They've confiscated securities I owned simply because I opened the accounts while stationed in California. It took almost two years for them to refund what they took.

They nail everyone for as much as they can possibly get, and they still can't make ends meet. Liberalism doesn't work. And unfortunately, that's exactly the kind of change the majority of people wanted for this country last November.

Blinded by the promised table scraps and other vote-buying programs liberals talk about during their campaigns. They appeal to people's greed.... promising something for nothing. The fruits of another man's labor.

It's not working for California and it won't work for the rest of us, either.

I feel your pain, though, Joey. I don't know if there's anything you can do about it though.

Except find a job where you don't have to earn part of your income in California.

they're bound and determined to get my money one way or the other... they're trying to get it through a bailout this time.

I always paid more for state taxes than I did for federal, no matter what my marital state or whether or not I had kids.

California sucks rocks. Don't anyone hold your breath if you are expecting a refund: http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/californias-budget-crisis-may-delay/story.aspx?guid=%7BECAEADD3-9E77-4793-B288-43EFC09CBB5E%7D&dist=msr_1

They're like teenagers. "How can I be overdrawn if I still have checks? Whatever!"

The California legislature has NEVER stuck to a budget or said "gee we just CAN'T afford it!"

You can always write or call your elected officials in California.

Oh yeah, that's right. You probably can't vote there. They can tax you, but you have no representation.

Got a great visual of a teen stomping foot while whining this one out....

Really, I didn't used to mind paying State taxes...as I knew I actually received the benifit of those monies in services (ie roads, library, schools, etc..) It was the Federal taxes that really steamed my veggies! Seemed to me the Fed got something...I got nothing. Present day.....both take so much, it makes me wonder just how far they will go to get all my money? What little I have anyway....gonna tax me all the way to the poor house! :((

I have no problem paying a fair tax. However, never saw that from CA! LMAO! :))

How far will they go? Pretty much all of the way.

The way to avoid the poor house? Move out of state. *cough*

The worst part is that my company won't let me claim more W4 exemptions for CA than I do for Fed taxes, so I am stuck with giving CA withholding this year as well.

I'd much rather give them squat, and if they can prove I owe them something, then I'll write a check the next year.

Something about taking my money before establishing that I really owe it then not having it when it turns out I don't just rubs me he wrong away...

It's like putting a deposit down on a rental, and then the company not having the funds to refund it later...

I've tried living in AZ for two years...we have friends that live all up and down the Pacific Northwest...and ya know what? none of them come close to California for me. I was born here...and will most likely die here...it is home. Parts of Nevada I like...and we have thought of moving...that is until you realize that one of the most liberal members in congress is their Representative! Harry Reid....ewwwww...the guy gives me hives!

Best thing for California now would be to simply cut all those damn 'extra's' out of the budget. A true conservative needs to go in there and clean house! As Joey pointed out, the State wants our money long before it's even determined that we owe them anything.

I've thought about running for a seat....but know darn well, my mouth would get me in much to much trouble. So, I've begun a writing campaign of sorts....to the newspapers, to my representatives, and to my governor. I'm trying to get as many people as I can to simply do the same thing...on both sides of the party aisle. Nothing else I really can do ....

Joey...please tell me you have a great tax guy? You can, in some circumstances, even right off his fee's on your taxes as a business expense. Something just doesn't sound right to me. Six months of work here should not be any different then three months or a year. You live here...a resident of California...so I don't know why our being taxed as a temporary workers or guest worker. Just strikes me as odd. We've got a great guy...if you would like..I can ask him for someone to refer in your neck of the woods?

My brother-in-law is a CPA, and he is helping me with it this year.
I normally just use tax software and do my homework. My taxes aren't that complicated:

Single income
3 kids
Mortgage Interest
Charitable Contributions
Interest on investments

Of course this year I have a little more:
CA taxes
Form 5695 for my windmills

I think I have it pretty much figured out so that CA owes me back every penny (besides the disability insurance they require) but who knows when I'll actually see a check from them. I would just rather save myself the headache and stop withholding anything for CA.

Ya know Joey...you can put your up to 8 on your State w-2 as dependents....which means you get almost all your earnings post Fed deductions. However the down side to doing this is that at the end of the year...they get ya for a larger chunk in taxes...but it may give you just what you need since you get everyting back at the end of the year anyway. Just a thought I wanted to pass along. ;)

I actually claim 12 exemptions, and I come out about even each year on federal taxes. That's mostly because the amount of money i give to charity on top of having a single income, 3 kids, a mortgage, etc.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2009/01/tax-refunds-now.html

It's official, Arnold is holding all returns for the next 30 days.

Interesting quote from the article:
"The controller's office estimates that the delay in tax refunds will free up $1.99 billion over the next month to pay for education, debt service, and other payments that legally have first claim to state funds."

BUT THESE ARE NOT STATE FUNDS!!!

CA debts and education have first claim to MY MONEY?!?!? What About MY debts and education? It's MY MONEY!!!

I've just figured out a way to pay nothing to CA this next tax year. If next year they can prove I owe them something, perhaps I will send them a check depending on whether my personal budget can afford it after everything else that has first claim to thise funds allow it.

"Your return has been received and processed, however, your refund cannot be issued at this time.

Due to the state’s persistent cash flow problems, the State Controller has directed FTB to stop sending refund requests to the State Controller’s Office for payment. Refund payments will resume when the State Controller indicates there is enough cash available to make refund payments."
