View Full Version : Motorcycle Enthusiats What's Your Favorite Ride?

I'm getting so antsy waiting for spring!
There's been a few days nice enough for enjoyable rides, but I miss riding daily.
I'm especially anxious about the 5 state run (http://www.5staterun.com/) that's coming up in May. We're arranging with friends and family to attend and so far it's looking like there'll be about 20 of us all riding together. It sounds like it should be a nice scenic route.
Where do you like to ride? Are there any particular runs that you especially enjoy?
There's some back roads around Cushing, Oklahoma that are really fun to ride. Lots of nice lazy curves, the scenery is nice, and the roads are mostly tree lined so it's nice and cool in the middle of summer. I think that was my favorite place to ride so far, except too short. :(
I also really enjoy the toy runs around November and December. I love the sound of thousands of bikes roaring and seeing how some decorate their bikes. There's always some interesting custom jobs out there too. I don't like that first few minutes though, when everyone starts up and all you can smell is exhaust... bleh.
The last few I've been on, someone has come in/on those stallions (http://southwesttrikes.com/stallion.htm). They're neat, but it seems like if you were going to get one of those, why not just go all the way and get a car?

Hubby belongs to an FJ group. (Sport/Tour motorcycles) Every year in May they gather together and do a three day camp and ride. This year they are meeting up in Petaluma....(On the other side of Sears Point/Infinion Raceway) and will ride up and down the 101 and side highways up and around the coast of Northern California. It's beautiful...cold...but beautiful.
The pictures he brings home are just gorgeous. He says the rides are varied from nice and lazy to hard Kook-a-lou-ing. lol. (that's their word for wild and hairy...lol)
Up the other side of Northern California, Hubby and I have taken several trips up into the foothills of NorCal. Really beautiful and nice sweeping curves to tight hairpins (mostly up the 49, 88, and 89, heading into Nevada)
I'm good for about three hours...then I have to get off the bike for a bit. Darn hard seat on his bike...like a postage stamp....and my bum gets numb! I miss being able to ride my own bike...but being a passenger gives me the leisure to take a good long look at the scenery.
Can't wait for Spring!

My neighbor had one of those bmw's when I was younger, Oddball. As I recall, it was a very nice bike. Myself, I'd like to have a Harley Softail Custom FXSTC one day.
Is there any particular place that you like to ride, or any "runs" that you look forward to?

Harley Fat Boys but I don't own one, enjoy them though. I always wanted to take Route 66 all the way and then up the ocean highway to Washington State on a bike.

Oh I bet that is beautiful scenery, Mysticbeauty! I bet there's a lot of nice places to ride there. I'm envious.
You need to make him get you a better seat! Still, three hours is a long time sitting still no matter what you're sitting on. Speaking of postage stamp size seats, the Harley Rockers have a fold out passenger seat that looks like it would be the most uncomfortable thing ever! Not to mention it doesn't look really sturdy! Hubby wanted one of those, but since our daughter has to ride with him when she goes with us, he opted against it much to my relief.
I agree, while it is fun riding, it's also nice to just be a passenger once in a while to be able to take in the view. :)

Fat Boys are nice bikes. That would be my second choice behind a Softail.
Wonder how long it would take to ride Route 66 across the country... Whatever it'd take normal people, double it and that'd probably be how long it takes me. I like to stop at all the interesting places along the way.

Did any of you catch Robbie Maddison's New Year's Eve jump on ESPN? I hardly ever watch ESPN, but was flipping past it at about 11:50 and saw the motorcycle and the setup and had to stop.
It was pretty neat. He jumped up onto a 10 story building and then back off! I wish I had the guts to do that kind of stuff. I bet it's amazing even though he broke his hand. :(

The best rides?
British bikes (Triumphs, Nortons, BSAs) from the 1960s were the best rides.
I know, you had to tinker with them constantly. You had to adjust to their idiosyncrasies. You could not run the hell out of them and expect them to last. They were not as fast as modern bikes. They vibrated.
They leaked oil. They were finicky about starting. The Lucas electrical system went on strike periodically.
Maybe you have to be a masochist to love those ornery old Brit Bikes, but I still think they were the best ride ever.
Second best is BMWs (I have a '79 R65 that runs good but needs a little bit of work). Beemers are almost as cool as Brit bikes, and more reliable.
I have a Honda CRF230F for the trails that is also an awesome bike, except that I don't get out with it often enough.
If I hit the lotto, I would have a bunch of bikes. I would travel far and wide to obtain a mint condition 1971 Norton Commando, a '65 Triumph Bonneville, a '66 BSA lightning, a 1947 Indian Chief, a '51 Vincent Black Shadow and a '59 BSA Gold Star. I would also have a new Harley V-Rod, a new 1200 Sportster, new Suzuki Hyabusa and a new Royal Enfield 500.
I would stick with my CRF230F for the dirt, but would like to have an old Bultaco just for fun.

Wow, you know a lot about motorcycles, Robertneal! I googled Bultaco, those are some interesting looking bikes. Do you like to tinker with bikes too? I confess, I'm not as interested in tinkering as I am riding. I'd probably be considered a dub in biker circles, but oh well. :shifty:
Our friends' dad has an old Indian (don't know what year) that he takes out every once in a while. It's a nice bike. He's had it forever and has taken really good care of it. I wish I could afford getting a bike to only ride once in a blue moon. I'd be too afraid of hurting it to ride it if I collected bikes like that.
I think my very favorite bike that I've seen ever was one that we happened upon while riding in town. This guy built his own, he had parts from all sorts of bikes on there. I'm not 100% certain that there weren't 10-speed parts on there too! THAT'S dedicated to riding! :))
Do you have a favorite place that you like to ride? A route that's particularly pleasing to you for one reason or another, or a particular event that you like to take part in?

Pst hasnt been 666 for many years, it's been relabled 191 (at least in Utah) And Utah's portion of it isn't exciting at all. Have to get off 191 (666) to get the excitment. (I know I took it from the I70 Junction to about 30 miles from Monument valley in a car. Not much to see. )
Now if you get off the main road into Valley of the Gods, Goosenecks, Castle valley, Deadhorse point, Bridges National Monument. Now your talking.

Some short (Old highway 4 Cleer Creek Canyon (less than 20 min total), to the Mirror Highway (full day ride), North Rim of the Grand Canyon (okay that's arizona, but I'm hopefully going to do it This summer, and the loop from Kanab out on Highway 89a Through Marble Canyon back up through page and back to Kanab -- That's a 6a - 9p ride hehe)

I spent 3 months on a motor cycle in New Zealand in 1970/71. It was absolutely fabulous. The traffic there is most likely still tolerable for motorcycling... but with the exception of a few remote out-of-the way places in this country the open road is a distant memory. I always wanted to cruise the coast highway from Washington through California one day, but what I found was that most of it is bumper to bumper when the weather is nice enough to enjoy the trip.

I still remember the first time I ever saw a Bultaco, way back when I was a kid and went to a dirt flat track race. In those days a lot of guys raced Triumph 650s and BSA 650s on the flat tracks.
But here was this little 250 cc two stroke racing bike that had a black and yellow striped tank (that looked like a bumble bee). It had straight pipes, outrageously high compression and the noise that little engine made was deafening; BANG BANG BANG. It probably weighed less than the guy who was riding it, and the little 250cc (15 cubic inch) engine was rated at 38 HP. It went like the proverbial bat out of hell and I can't imagine that it ever set any records for longevity or reliability. It gave the bigger Triumphs and BSAs a run for their money, if the right guy was riding it.
Bultaco presentled a fairly diverse selection of bikes, off-road and on road, racing and non-racing. As far as I know, they were all of the old school two stroke variety where you had to mix gas and oil. The companies that survived either went to four stroke or went to oil injection system for two strokes. It got to where nobody wanted the mess of having to mix the stuff anymore, so the "old school" companie like Bultaco went out of business.
One of my favorite place to ride is a five mile loop in a park. There are lots of curves and you can ride slow.
When we go dirt riding, we go to a national forest where there are many miles of trails that are challenging but well maintained. We haven't gone there for over a year, though. We need to make time and get with the program.
I am not a very good mechanic, but I do like to tinker with bikes as long as it does not involve tearing them down.
I have never participated in organized events, other than as a spectator. Maybe I will eventually join a vintage riders group. That would be fun and informative.

I love the choices of music accompaniment, but I think you should try leaving the Harley sound in the background. That other clip you posted with only the engine was great.
I am astounded how similar this Boulder clip is of the highway into the hills north of Fairbanks... the vegetation is different of course, but the terrain and road curves are so similar I could almost tell where I was on our road in your film. ;)

There's been a few days nice enough for enjoyable rides, but I miss riding daily.
Tell me about it. Out here, things get miserable after Halloween and stay that way till around April. I'm going to have to check out that 5 state run - though I'll have to trailer my bike out of the snowbelt to do it.
Where do you like to ride? Are there any particular runs that you especially enjoy?
Everywhere, but I don't ride in massive cities with crazy traffic (LA, SF, Chicago, New York, Philly, Miami...). I particularly like to ride sweepers at high speeds in the west.
As far as trikes, they are good for they day when age, reflexes, or health conditions keep you from adequately controlling a motorcycle. I don't think I'll ever go that route though.
I like Buells - tuned Harley Sportster motors in a sportbike frame. They have a number of unique design characteristics, but have the feel of a Harley while handling like a Ducati.
Someday, I hope to be able tour Europe on something with Desmopower.

I bet your winters up there make ours seem like a chilly day! That would be quite a drive for you, about 12 hours or so, huh? You ARE dedicated! I've never been on this one before, but it looks like there's probably a lot of good scenery and maybe some interesting places to visit along the way.
I sure hope it doesn't rain! I was trying to look closely at the photos from previous years, to see if I could see any indication of rain and couldn't so that's a good sign.
It looks like they might have a pretty good turn out this year. I visited the host hotel website two days ago and it's already booked for those days, but there's several others nearby and camping too.
Everywhere, but I don't ride in massive cities with crazy traffic (LA, SF, Chicago, New York, Philly, Miami...). I particularly like to ride sweepers at high speeds in the west.
I don't like to ride in crazy traffic either. Not even a little bit. That'd be cool to ride sweeper. I prefer to be at the back anyway because I get a huge kick out of seeing the stream of bikes in front of me. One fellow that we go on toy runs and stuff with always wants to be in the front. He's the busy sort though, finish the run, drop off his toys, and head off for his next activity. I like to idle around and check out all the bikes.
Have you ever had to handle any emergencies when you ride as sweeper?
As far as trikes, they are good for they day when age, reflexes, or health conditions keep you from adequately controlling a motorcycle. I don't think I'll ever go that route though.
Oh yeah, I've seen a lot of neat trikes and I can see the necessity, but those stallions are a few steps beyond. From what I can tell, they're just cars with one front wheel and no roof.
I like Buells - tuned Harley Sportster motors in a sportbike frame. They have a number of unique design characteristics, but have the feel of a Harley while handling like a Ducati.

I had to google the bikes you listed. Lots of nice looking results. I especially liked the look of the ducati monsters (http://www.ducati.com/en/bikes/my2009/FamilyPage.jhtml?family=Monster). :) I get lost in all the features and technical stuff. I know that I should know more if I'm going to ride, but at this point I don't. I'd like to remedy that, but once the conversation turns toward compression, torque, etc, I can literally feel my eyes start to glaze over.
I'd like to tour Europe on ANY bike. That would be sweet!

We need to chip in and get ROBERTENEAL one of those trickle chargers so he doesn't have to wait to recharge when it's time to ride.
So far our bikes haven't sat long enough to require one. If it gets sunny, we get itchy and start making excuses to go to the store! :))

There's info on local hotels etc as well. I think the Super 8 that we're staying at is booked, which is just as well for you because, as I've learned since I made the reservation, the owner doesn't honor the rates that she cites.
We'll be arriving in Guymon on the evening of Friday, May 8th, but I don't know what time. We don't do well with schedules...
I'm planning on taking off on Friday so that I can get everything packed and ready to go. I'd like to leave by 11am, which should put us in Guymon around 6 or 7 depending on how many times we stop along the way...

Fat Boys are nice bikes. That would be my second choice behind a Softail.
Wonder how long it would take to ride Route 66 across the country... Whatever it'd take normal people, double it and that'd probably be how long it takes me. I like to stop at all the interesting places along the way.
I have a relative who works for an American Motorcycle manufacturer who rides to work on his bike nearly every day. Right now he has one of their touring bikes. Nice bike. He says his next bike will be one of the new bikes they juststarted amaking a couple of years ago. He says it is one really sweet ride.

Nortman, my hubby rides most days. I do when I can, but I have to move equipment a lot of times so I need the trunk space :( Some of those touring bikes have got everything you could imagine on them! Sometimes I think I'd like to have one.

Tires, brakes, brake fluid, fork seals, fork oil, motor oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, turn signals, mirrors, headlight stay, grips, lube the cables and the chain... and lots and lots and lots of cleaning.
Trying to track down an oil leak as well. I think it is coming from one of the seals on the oil cooler.
I'm working on Monday and then taking the rest of the week off to get it all finished up.

Had an "adventure" today with mine. I'm working graveyards, but I still get up during the day to get stuff done. Well I hear this "crash" outside. I'd been listening to the wind blowing all day so I go outside to see what the wind has got . . . . . my motorcycle is laying on it's side . . . . the wind blew it over. Now I've lifted the think a couple time no problem. Took me and two nieghbors to lift it into the wind. Got off lucky, no broken parts. Couldn't put the cover back on it with the wind, so it got covered by a couple of inches of snow this afternoon.

Thanks, Jim. I really do enjoy it.
That's quite a ride there! I'm sure you DO miss it! They had a '47 knucklehead at the shop a few weeks ago. I was glad to get the chance to see it. The controls were something else! I can drive a standard, but that just seems like it'd be hard to get used to, maybe if it was on the right though. There was a gentleman there with pics of himself in his youth and one of those. He had some interesting stories to tell too. :)
There's a coupla different modded bikes and some 'off the shelf' bikes that maybe you could still ride.
You could get a stallion http://motorcycletestdrive.com/stallion2008.htm. It's even got a heater built in, I think. :)

No place to bring it inside to.
And I do have my limits when riding. Not in the snow, and ice has to be off the roads, and needs to be above 40.
That said, I have got out on it at least one day each month this winter. Last week was nice 70 degree days and put a couple hundred miles on it.

LOL at least you're not COMPLETELY crazy! I see some guys bundled up in the worst of weather and always worry about slick spots and black ice.
We get breaks throughout winter here where there's a day or two you can ride. Week before last, hubby started and finished his break in miles, it was so nice, upper 70's and mid 80's! We both rode to work, and then this week it got cold and rainy and then snowed! :(
I wouldn't have expected that in Utah. I guess I always imagined a looonnng cold winter, with snow that actually sticks and stays throughout winter.

I'm a huge BMW fan. My last one was an R11R. I rode it all over the midwest. If I get another one it will be an RT. BMW makes a great ride.

They SAY that the HD on accessories stands for Harley Davidson, but my friend told me, and I think he's right, that it means Hundred Dolla!

Yeah no kidding. Just to put a 2 up seat and a set of passenger foot pegs on my sporty cost me over 500 bucks. Hand grips were another 80, pipes were 350, new mirrors 120, and a set of adjustable highway pegs 300. Will be another 400 if I ever get around to putting a sissy bar on it. Of course, just wait till I can get my hand on a Road King!
The Girl from Ipanema
June 25th, 2009, 11:46 pm
Yeah, it adds up quick. We went through the same thing with both of ours. I was amazed. When we got hubby's new ride, he went ahead and had the 2 up seat put on and when I looked at the bill, I didn't see any reduction for the stock seat.
Now I think we should've done the seat ourselves and then put the stock seat on ebay and at least recoup something!
IIRC, just the pillion for the sissy bar on mine was like 55. For a tiny little cushion!
Hubby's looking at highway pegs for his and I'd like to have some, but I consider this bike to be transitional so I don't want to put too much more into it. I'll just wait till I get my soft tail. :)
Right now, I'm shopping for good luggage so we can go on longer trips and take along at least a few creature comforts, like clean clothes. :))

Yeah, seats aren't too hard to put on. I think on mine it was a screw and a knob. Pipes and the other stuff wasn't to hard either. Anyways , always have them give you the old stuff if you do have the dealer do work on it. I wouldn't give them more than what they charge. As for the highway pegs I have, they're not too bad. I don't like to clutter my bike up with a bunch of junk, and these still allow me to keep the clean lines. http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444184171 9&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302290103&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302290103&bmUID=1245985611035&bmLocale=en_US

They make the sportster in a low model now too. Should be a lot easier for a person of small stature to ride. It has a 26.3" unladen seat height compared to the 28" unladen height of the XL883C. It's what mine is although I'm 6'0. I don't know what I was thinking when I got the XL883L. I hardly fit on that damn thing. But if I ever get my way and bob that thing, I think it will look sweet.
I like the Nightster and Sportster Iron bikes too. Harley came out with the Nightster a few months after I bought mine, otherwise I would have got one instead.

Hubby's is a 2009 Sportster, I liked it at first; especially the fatter tank, but it might be the lower seat because it feels very short to me, which is odd, because when I took over this 883, it felt too tall for me and I didn't like the thinner tank. It runs great though, takes off so smooooootttthhhh.
He really likes the rocker, but because of the passenger seat, or lack of one that would be good for longer trips, had to choose something else because our daughter rides with him when she goes with. I'll be happy with either a heritage classic or fat boy. But I'm not too picky. :)
If it goes, it's good.
Heh, speaking of which, I saw an old bicycle that a guy had put what looked like a lawnmower or chain saw engine on. That cracked me up. I approve of his dedication. :))
