World of Warcraft
Pros: Action, adventure, commerce, beauty.
Cons: I don't get paid to play it.
I was looking forward to Wrath of the Lich King WOW expansion pack, but, it's here.
I don't have time for any other game.

I used to play EVE Online and Anarchy Online. EVE was a space opera with an economy where users generated pretty much everything. In it, I was a guild head.
The cons to both games were the time you have to invest to get your character to go anywhere. Playing for an hour or two a day isn't enough. Moreover, while I love most people in game, I'd be lying if I didn't say that gamers tend to be a particular crowd. There's only so much discussion about Magic the Gathering, Star Wars, really obscure anime, and Battlestar Galactica that I can take.
EVE had an additional problem: enormous numbers of hours were required to build something in EVE, and once other players destroyed it would be gone for good. Some objects took years to build and would be destroyed in a single battle.
My own thought - I know, I'm preaching now - is try a few games, see which has a community you like, or better yet - get some friends that you know won't let you kill 16 hours at a time, and go find community together. I'd be gaming if there were a way to read more and talk more about what I read with gamers; I'd be gaming if gamers were more open to talking and communicating outside of the game.
There's a really cool blog about MMORPG's: Terra Nova (http://terranova.blogs.com/terra_nova/)
If you want more to read about the academic uses of virtual worlds, and why I harp on that "hours vanish a second" bit: Game Theories (http://www.walrusmagazine.com/article.pl?sid=04/05/06/1929205&tid=1)

World of Warcraft...just now upgrading to Burning Crusade.
Pros: Family game...wife and 19 year old step son both play it
Cons: So does her ex-husband
Pros: Ex-hubby's dingbat girlfriend doesn't like WoW and went back to Evercrack
Cons: $25 to transfer a toon to a new account. Finally getting our other computer fixed so wife and I don't have to share one. Now I'll be able to play at the same time but only if I pay to keep my character. Only lvl 22 so will probably just start over and use the money for a dinner out.
Cons: Game is down every Tuesday for maintenance and they never bring it up on schedule.
Oddly enough we're all in the same guild headed by her son. Guess that's not so strange after all since we used to live with her ex before we moved back to Kentucky and her son moved in when we moved out.

played EQ1 for almost 5 years.......its where the name Vaard originated....... was a L70 cleric (was the max level at the time) when i sold my character for $1500.......
being a cleric in a high end guild turns into a full time job... i was required to be online 6-8 hours a day on weeks days and raiding all weekend........
i loved my character, i loved my guild and loved the game, but when we bought our house, i quit the game, got permission from my guild leader to sell my account (since all my gear came from guild activities, i never would have sold it without permission, i would have turned it over to the guild as a bot).....
i played voyage century for a a year, but with item mall, i ended up spending more money on that game then i did in 5 years of EQ......
now i just play sigle player games like fall out 3 and bioshock since i can stop at any time to do other stuff......

I played UO way back when, and some EQ... alot of EQ.
Went to DAOC and now I am playing Lord of the Rings.
Tried Age of Conan but it was too buggy and WOWs graphics were too simple and I like a sense of immersion so I dont play WOW.
Warhammer was too simple and havent tried anything else since.
I like to have a sense of exploration in a huge world, socialise some, level up alot, but also feel like there is a community of sorts developed. UO was the best at the community thing because you could do so many things not related to leveling up.
Maybe LOTRO will come along more in these elements but I get the feeling it wont happen.

Make you a free account with fileplanet. That way when it goes open beta you may get that free trial. Otherwise no free trial unless you get a trial key from a friend.

My youngest daughter...almost 19 now, got me hooked on playstation games like God of War 1 and 2, and now Final Fantasy 12...almost have the darn thing beat...100+ hours and more then half done...
So last year at Christmas, my girls got me Hellgate London and COD 3. I had played Civ 3 &4 and the Dungeon siege games... so I was more then ready to jump in...got more then half way into the game...and they killed it! Talk about depressing! Granted, I can still play the game solo...but it was Hellgate that got me interested into online gaming.
Is world of warcraft really that good? How are the graphics and war sequences? If I have to use my imagination to enjoy game play...then so not the game for me....

WoW is great to get your feet wet and keep them in the MMO world for quite some time.
Nice learning curve, metric craptons of content and flexible on a variety of systems.

Its about 15 buck a month.
This is typical for a large MMO where they maintain persistant servers that everyone uses at the same time.
There are some MMO that you do not have to pay monthing for but they use instancing heavily.
Instancing is when the main towns are public communial areas but every where else is only running when a group goes to that location. If another group wants to go to that same location, they will be in another instance and their paths will not cross. This is much cheaper to maintain than the true MMO's that charge a fee.
WoW is very well maintained and frequently patched, no problems there.
There are no legitimate external sales of in game items or currency. While you can buy in game items and currency with real cash, it is done through a third party on the black market and is against the game's terms of service.
I do believe you can download a 1 or 2 week trial version of WoW to try it out before investing it in.

I've got a 20 tauren druid and a 15 blood elf hunter on the sin'jin (sp?) server named "sameltorro" and "taicus" respectively. I would be higher but I have to share the computer with wife who also plays. She has a low 50's hunter and a 13 blood elf mage.
I like the game for the roleplay...don't care for pvp and only duel with friends. It's fun to meet new people randomly that you may have nothing in common with in real life other then you're on the same quest or in the same reigon of the game.
I tried Guild Wars and started to like it but couldn't afford to buy the game at the time and had a series of computer crashes anyways. Then step-son got me and his mom into WoW so haven't looked back.

A Knights of the Old Republic MMO is coming out in 2009 or 2010. It's being developed by Bioware.
Darkfall finally went to beta, but I have reservations. It's basically a throw back to UO. Open pvp, full corpse looting and all the little things that make a game hard to deal with. It'll be another niche game where everyone is a griefer.
I played Tabula Rasa for a few months and I liked it a lot. Wife liked it but only played my account. Never made her own.
I played Eve Online for almost a year. Fun Fun Fun. The difference between Eve and Darkfall is that even Eve has "safe" space for those who don't want to take part in pvp.
Lately, i've been staying with FPS games because i've never found a mmo where pvp even comes close to the balance of an FPS.

Played Wow a bit.
Dungeons and dragons online.
Tried Eve and Dark Age of Camelot.

The thing I like about MMORPGs is that they are much like life. You have to work to get somewhere. I don't mind the grinding at all. I quickly bore of instant gratification type games. WoW is often like work, but it's a job you enjoy. When you reach a high level, have high gear, and talents, you have accomplished something. Whne I see players with top shelf stuff, I'm always impressed and motivated to better my character.

I don't begrudge the Big MMO corps charging monthlies. They are constantly putting out updates, new material, they have live events all the time and I play with people around the world. Considering the rich graphics, complex stories, highly customizable characters and everything else, $15 a month is a bargain. Besides, I don't have to wait years for an expansion or update. I've played plenty stand-alone games and though they are fun, once they are over, they're over. I've tried a few non-monthly games online but they just didn't have the extensive input to keep my interest.

I played WoW after I got out of the Army and it served its purpose killing a lot of time. I hit 60 on my Undead Warrior and did the only two 40-mans that were out at the time before I sold her for $450 or so. After BC came out, I rolled an Orc Warrior (very diverse, I know) and leveled her to 70, did all the raids again, got into the Arena system, and dominated some faces. Ended up selling that character for a bit less than $600, and have yet to play the game since WOTLK was released.
The game became a problem between my ex-girlfriend and I, though. I love video games, I don't mind sinking a lot of time into them - if I'm single, and there's not much else to do. I'm more than capable of spending 10+ hours a day gaming on a day off and being content if I'm on my own, but if I've got friends to hang out with, or a girlfriend to spend time with, I'd greatly prefer to do that and have absolutely no problem simply dropping a game. She wanted to play a lot though, where it consumed most, if not all, of our free time, and I had a problem with that. That's not to blame the game itself as I'm sure differing personalities are more subject to the addiction, but I think it's relatively easy for most people to get sucked in.

I play maybe 2 to 3 hours a week, so the content is just fine. I tried WoW and the content is the same or better on the Free to play games I play.

I play Gladiatus because it doesn't take a lot of attention but it is a long time to build your character.
Check it out yourself.

Why would I want to play any other game than WoW? I could spend that time doing something useful. Like improving my reputation with the Ebon Blade.

Crap! Sorry about that. I haven't had good sleep in about 2 weeks. I ment I played Guild Wars and they are now free.
I'm sorry about that.
Me, too! I've been at Guild Wars for about 3 years and online play has always been free. I really enjoy it and play with my girlfriend on the west coast. We don headsets and kill Charr until 2:00 AM east coast time.
Pros: Beautiful environments, free online play, family game - my son and daughter also play.
Cons: No level higher than 20 on current game and I waste too much time there!
They have a new game coming out soon, Guild Wars 2, you'll be able to level higher than 20 in that one and there will be new professions and characters.
I've got several characters - two of them are level 20+, one is PVE and I keep one in pre-sear just because that environment is fun and it lets me help out noobs.

I can't stand when people spell it "noobs". Drives me nuts, it comes from the term NEWBIE and hence should be NEWB. ::sighs:: not noob, not nub....NEWB. Ugh....nevermind.

That is one of the major drawbacks of playing online games. Little kids who try to bully you, kill stealing, and otherwise being a jack ass.
Yesterday I was playing and this "punk" was stealing my kills waiting until I started attacking then finishing off the monster and collecting the loot and exp.
I finally got tired of him and logged off that toon and logged on my higher level toon and spent better part of an hour stealing all his stuff. When he finally cried about it. I mentioned that he should not do the same to others.
The little fart lied and said he never does that, I told him to wait and switched toons and said "really?"
He logged off.

Good thing about WoW is they cannot do that to you. once you engage the monster or whatever, it's your kill. If someone kills him for me i say thanks and grab the loot.

What they do instead is run up and hit your target once before you can and run off to let you do the fighting for no xp or loot. Then there's the PvP lurkers that hang around you hoping to be "accidentally" caught in your field effect so they can attack you
That's why I like dungeons, it's just your group no matter how long you're in there.

I like the graphics and the rest of the community on Rohan. You will always encounter some snotty 10 year old messing things up.
BTW I played WoW. I just didn't like it.

That must be the reason why I was fighting mobs for nothing in WoW. In Rohan they have a justice system for those PvP lurkers. Most of those bozos like to prey on lower level characters, if you whack a low enough level you are sent to jail for a time. The victim will have a vengence file that keeps track of who owned him and later on he can use the file to teleport in on the PvPer and nuke him.
It keeps the random Pker from bullying the noobs.
But if you are a PvPer you can sign up for township battles when whole towns attack each other. The battle takes place through a gate so if you don't want to pvp you don't have to. I like Rohan.

Yes, I know the origin of the word. However, language and spelling often evolve into something that has little to do with their origins. According to the Urban Dictionary:
II. Defining 'Noob'
Contrary to the belief of many, a noob/n00b and a newbie (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=newbie)/newb (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=newb) are not the same thing. Newbs (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Newbs) are those who are new to some task* and are very beginner at it, possibly a little overconfident about it, but they are willing to learn and fix their errors to move out of that stage. n00bs (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=n00bs), on the other hand, know little and have no will to learn any more. They expect people to do the work for them and then expect to get praised about it, and make up a unique species of their own. It is the latter we will study in this guide so that the reader is prepared to encounter them in the wild if needed.
Noobs are often referred to as n00bs (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=n00bs) as a sign of disrespect toward them, and it's often hella funny, but I will refer to them as noobs during this reading.
* Usually the topic at hand on an internet forum.
BTW, [intentional acronym for "by the way", common internet slang], you might want to check your location. Is that really how you meant to spell "business"?

Holy Moses that drove me up the WALLLLLLLL:wall:
You might want to check out Guild Wars 2 which is being introduced in March, I think. According to GuildWiki, GW2 will have Z-axis:
The control system is going to be significantly changed (in particular mouse movement in the form "click to move" will be removed from the game), however target (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Target) locking will still function. Guild Wars 2 will introduce a Z-axis (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Z-axis) to the game which will allow characters (http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Character) to jump over obstacles. Actions which have characters interacting with the environment, such as sliding and swimming will also be introduced.
I can't wait!

Personally MMORPGS to me are quite boring, heck its really a grind fest that never really ends and you get better loot along the way. I guess I don't find them to catch my interest like a standard RPG game. Also has anyone played Sacred 2? I'm thinking about getting that for either PS3 or 360.

I might check out Champions and also will definitely be checking into Star Wars Old Republic when it comes out but it looks like Bioware is a ways off on that release (2010 or 2011 it looks like). Diablo 3 although not a strict MMO I will also buy and try although I like the dark D2 look better than what I have seen so far.
Ex-Wow player (didn't care fo WoTLK) I now play Lord of the Rings Online and really enjoy it. It's a great game for me and the background/stories are solid and fun.
