Just last night, I was driving down on route 7 with the car I just bought and out of nowhere a ****ing buck came out of no where and I nearly hit him. Thankfully, I wasn't going real fast, and I managed to stop just in time (thanks to my brakes). It only tapped the animal without any damage to my front
end of the car.
The deer ran off and I'm just sitting there just shooked up and what almost happened.
What makes it interesting is that the cops in this area will ticket you if you are caught going more than 10 miles below the speed limit which the limit on RT 7 is 55 mi.
I was going at about 35 miles an hour. I'd rather take the damn ticket than hit a deer especially this time of year where they get real bad.
I have started seeing on average 3 to 5 deer when I'm coming home at night.

My wife and I have each hit one. I know of a guy who hit one and had two more plow in to the side of his pick-up all at once. 2 died, one ran off. He said they were delicious. So was the one i hit.

Given two deer little "love taps". First one was in my car. Left some nice skid marks in the middle of the road. Dang deer just sat in the middle of the road watching me. Soon as my front bumper tapped her, she ran off.
Second one was on my motorcycle (in the middle of town!). Laid down some rubber that night, but this lady turned and was trying to outrun me down the middle of the road. She got a tap on the butt before I got the bike stopped. Now THAT was an experiance I don't wanna do again.
Round here, I go about 10 under the limmit at night, and have my wheels right on the center line to give a little more monuverability.

Yes. Last winter I hit a deer at about 15mph. It was with my 1988 Buick Park Avenue though so it didn't do much but crack a headlight.
I see deer all the time though, and my Dad has hit a deer in the past year and my brother has hit 2. It's very common here. We have some of the highest density of deer population as well as deer collisions.

Hit one about 4am doing 75 on the freeway in rural Montana. Ripped the deer completely in half and nearly totaled the truck I was driving. I didn't even see it until it was right in front of me.

When I lived out in the sticks after college, I had to travel a slender 2 lane road to get to the house. There was no shoulder and tall grass grew right up to edge of the road. I used to pick quail and dove out of my grill after every trip.
Biggest animal I ever hit was a big ole owl. He was feeding on a kill and I rounded a curve, there he was. All I saw was feathers flying all around my truck...

Squirrels are funny, ever see one get caught under a transfer truck's trailer, looks like a pinball:)

Hogs.
Oh my heavens....that reminds me of the Saturday morning, after some heavy rains, when I glanced out of our sliding glass doors to our deck and there were two HUGE hogs there. Enormous. Massive. (The rain had washed away part of the fence of a nearby ranch)
There is no way any vehicle I have ever owned would have been able to run over either of them. They would have totalled a car hitting them. Probably would've killed them in the process, but they definitely would have been like running into a 5 foot by 3 foot boulder.

At night.
In the forest.
On foot.
We sorta stepped on the spot where he was bedded down. He butted me and I punched the little SOB 'cause he screwed up the night attack we were gonna spring on some Jaegers. Someone shot a flare after him while he was high-tailing it out of the AO.

I had a deer hit the side of my tire in a miata. I swear the only thing that saved me from it comming in the car with me was the popup headlight. Worst part it was in town, kind of. I was doing 65 so he flew several yards to the side of the road.
Another time we were going slowly down a winding road in the daylight and a huge buck ran into the passenger side door of our el camino one horn was stuck on the side mirror until it (the mirror) fell off. Stopped to go back and get our road kill, that big sucker got right back up and jumped the fence before we could get close.
My son said he accidently ran over the same squirrel several times in one day and it kept making a crunching sound under his tire.

I smoked a big buck with my Camry at 430 in the morning heading to work. I got out, couldn't see the deer anywhere, it was too dark to see the damage to my car other than a headlight was out so I drove to work at the large Government center.
I was running late (due to the deer hit) and parked up by the front doors with the intention of moving my car before business hours at the court house.
Best laid plans..it got busy, next thing I know I have a police sargeant laughing and asking me if I was trying to make a statement with my car.
I go outside, the entire side of my camry is crushed, there is deer poop and blood all down the side and best of all, there is a deer leg hanging out of my door jamb.
:)) :)) They took pictures of it and harassed me with the evidence for a long time :D
So yes, I have hit a big old deer, one that would make any trophy hunter proud.
I have also done in racoons, rabbits and two dogs and countless birdies
I feel like Michale Palins character in a Fish Called Wanda, I love animals, but I seem destined to kill them...frequently :(

About 4 years ago, on Interstate, this guy was going approximately 70 mph, and this deer charged him. I think they've decided to turn on us! LOL.
As for me, I've been hit twice. I say I've been hit because they ran into me. The first time was when I was coming home after doing a store run...country road, just at dusk when it's slightly hard to see, and doing 20 mph. This deer jumped on my hood from the right and when it fell, it's legs flew into my grill, broke out my headlight, and then it bounced into my left front quarter panel. Now I drive a Lincoln Towncar, and I knew it was going to be expensive, but the dealer wanted $500 plus tax just for the cheap plastic grill that this pricey car had on it. I won't even discuss the front quarter panel and the rest.
A couple of days later, same road, same speed, pretty much the same time, but about a quarter of a mile further down the road, another one jumped me. Sadly this one broke its back leg. It took off up into the trees and brush so fast I never even got my door open before it was gone.
Thank God I didn't buy that grill and that quarter panel. That would have thoroughly ticked me off!
The deer are quite populated where I live, and I've noticed the past few years that right before deer season comes in, they all disappear, only to re-appear a couple of days after it's over. And yes, they've taken to attacking us. Not funny. Not funny at all.
ROTFLMAO anyway.

I hit a very small deer years ago. The darned thing was shorter than the hood of the car. The car was a mid-80s Chrysler full size, so it was built like a tank.
Except for the grille and the front end that were plastic.
I was traveling about 40 (the limit) in a residential area at night (no street lights). Didn’t see the thing until I hit it.
It looked like the front end of the car exploded! All the plastic ****tered, including the grille. What a mess.
Can’t figure out this word filter? The word isn’t the least bit objectionable!

In north Florida it is a common thing.
The deer graze in the ditches off to the sides of the road in the dark hours after sunset and before dawn and any body commuting to work is at risk of hitting one if they get startled.
You can even be traveling slow and in two leaps they are right in front of you before you even have a chance to react or even if you could , to stop.
Had to take a pickup into a body shop for repairs after taking out the grill and right fender at about 45 mph and there were about 8 others there in line ahead of me.
Owner says they average a deer hit about every week and a half or so but some times of the year when they are moving he can get as many as 20 or more vehicles a week from either hitting deer or the deer hitting the vehicle.
Smashed side panels, oil pans ripped off the bottom of engines, cracked circuit boards in engine computers, radiators and ac cooling coils, stabilizer bars bent, windshields and door windows taken out.
This is a place that holds about 50 vehicles for scale. I live in a rural / farm area where a lot of people commute to the cities for work so dark hour driving is common on the early runs to work.

In australia hitting wallabies and kangaroos is pretty common in the country, kangaroos make a nasty ding on your car. in the burbs running over possums is really common.
Because they have a pouch where their babies live you have to get out and check to see if any survived and take them to wildlife services. every put your hand in a wallaby pouch? i recomend against it

Remus, if you had just pulled off to the side of the road, waited about ten minutes, taken a flashlight out and looked for the deer, you might have found it laying dead within about fifty yards of where you "tapped it".

I had friends that were driving an F-250 that saw a group of does about to cross the road in front of him on a rural road. He slowed down to a crawl and then simply stopped and let them run across in front of him. After they had crossed he started up again and said it felt like he was driving over a speed bump. They stopped again and got out to see what it was. There was a small nearly dead deer laying under their truck. Evidently while they were watching the other cross one got paniced, slipped on the blacktop and ended up under the truck without hitting the side. My friends were quite freaked out by the whole experience.

Depends on the trauma to the deer.
If you dress it soonest and hose out the carcass well, there should be np problem.

Certain cuts are tasty. For the most part you will probably find it tough and of a "funny" taste. Best stuff is deer summer sausage or jerky or ground meat. If you are gonna eat steaks, the loin is the only way to go. And does are much better than bucks. Especially younger does.

Yes if the internals are not damaged. Once the organs get messed up or burst the meat is probably no good. A good processing facility will not take a poorly killed or dressed deer.

I've personally hit a couple deer, with minimal damage done. But a couple weeks ago a friend of mine had a buck run square into her driver side door full speed. The damage to her fender and both doors was nasty. And the buck just ran away. Tough as nails, deer are.

Three elk and two deer, mostly in the same car, an '02 Sonata, which is still up and running.
The first elk was almost a broadside; it was running one way and I swerved the other, so I just caught it's hind leg with the driver side headlight. It went up onto the hood, but slid off just before the windshield, taking out the mirror and ripping all the trim off. Banged up the quarter panel too...
After that, I another one run into the passenger side of the car, right at the front of the front door. It was about 10P, and I saw him jump the fence on the side of the road, but couldn't stop in time. I may have actually been beter served by speeding up...
The third one was another that ran into the car, just behind the front tire on the driver side. He was the biggest one; his head came down just a hair behind the windshield, and not only put spiderwebs on the window down to the windshield wipers, but left a dent the size of a dinner plate about a good two inches deep. Scratched the heck out of the paint on the roof with his horns too... also popped the door. The only way to keep it closed was to lock it, after which the rods connected to the handle fell off.
One deer ran into me, and I hit the other. The one I hit was the only one that happened during daylight; I was in a line of cars/trucks, about ten long. I had just passed in a passing area, and settled in between two jacked-up 4x4's. I saw a small group of deer on the side of the road, but figured that they weren't stupid enough to run across the road with all the vehicles going by.
Since I was driving a New Beetle at the time, I figure that the one said to the others, "Bet I can jump that little car"...
The last one I hit ran out, turned around and went to the shoulder, then turned around again, stretching out it's neck to run. Well, it stretched out just far enough to put it's head through my windshield, although there was almost no damage to the rest of the vehicle.
Spun it around like a top, though.
Luckily, my insurance company not only took care of it, but my rates didn't change. Even after all but the last one ran a minimum of $4000. :)

its only blue in the CITIES not in the country where all the deer kills happen. 2 years ago my wife totaled her 93 accord when she hit a doe carrying twins!!
She works nights so she usually calls me on her way in so we can chat and at least once a day she has to hit her brakes and blow her horn because deer run in front of her. The other night she had a "Sweet 10 point buck" try to play chicken, the buck ran thankfully.
I see on the average 1 fresh deer a day on the side of the road during the rut. Also I think since the weather is much cooler than normal it has the deer confused and running a bit earlier than normal this year.

Oh yea, in fact in Ohio if you want to you can give your name/number to the local PD or the State HP and they will go down the list calling people when there is a deer hit. The one my wife hit, she called a friend at work who then called her ex husband and he was there to pick up the deer within 30 minutes, thats how we found out the doe was carrying twins. Its safe as long as you have it processed quickly.

I hit a possum or something once. And I've been in a vehicle when my dad hit a cat. Right in front of us once, a deer came out of the woods out of nowhere and nicked the car in front of us. It was thrown to the ground and it jumped up and ran off. Don't know if it had internal injuries, but it seemed ok at the moment.
I'm of the mind that if an animal runs in front of me, I'm not going to hit the brakes and endanger myself or anyone in the car with me. If I can miss it, I will, if not, sorry critter.

I didn't see the actual hit but unfortunately did see the aftermath on this one. I was travelling on I64 and came upon a horrible scene. A semi must have hit a whole herd of deer. There was blood and deer parts for 100 yards or more over both lanes of the road. It was pretty gruesome even for a die hard deer hunter like myself that has field dressed a lot of deer.

It depends on which organs were damaged and how soom you are able to field dress it. Personally speaking, if I opened it up and discovered that the kidneys or bladder were burst, I would forget it right there. If the intestines were burst and I could stand the stench, I would just make sure that I THOROUGHLY washed/rinsed the cavity with clear cold water until the stench was gone. Thorough cooking after that point would be a very wise choice. Of course, on a couple of occasions I have eaten (while sober or mostly sober) Kimchi. The taste was not at all bad after I got it past my nose.

Most of the venison I have had has been from Pennsylvania or South Carolina. What the deer are eating when harvested does make a Difference to the taste. If the deer are harvested from a primarily forest habitat they tend to taste a little bit more "Gamey" than one taken from a primarily "Farm Country" habitat.

I've personally hit a couple deer, with minimal damage done. But a couple weeks ago a friend of mine had a buck run square into her driver side door full speed. The damage to her fender and both doors was nasty. And the buck just ran away. Tough as nails, deer are.
That deer is undoubtedly dead. I used to be one of the MP game wardens at Fort Jackson, SC. and most times "the deer just kept going after it hit the car (or vice versa), we could find it within about fifty yards of the road.

Hubby rides FJ's....motorcycles. Anyway, someone found this and posted it on their FJ group posting site...Watch closely....it replays in slow motion several times...:D

Way back in the late 80's, my husband told me a story about 3 Cows and a Camaro. Yuba City, out in the country. This guy has the worse luck with cars. He had 6 cars in 7 months. All wrecks!
So this guy is driving down a country road, at night...dusk actually. He's doing 90 in a 55 zone. He comes across 3 Black Angus cows standing in the middle of a 2 lane highway. Before he can even hit the brakes, he has nailed the group of cows! Center punches the middle cow, nails the cow on the right of him, and it goes flying off into the pasture....nails the cow on the left of him, and it goes flying off into the dark.
He gets the car stopped....the black Angus that he center punched is now on top of his car! It has crushed the roof of his car in. There is a huge poop streak that ran from the hood up to it's resting place atop his roof of his car. Can't open his door...he had to crawl out his window.
Now about this time, the local police show up, and know him very well, looks at the accident, and calls it into the County Sheriff, because it's out of the police jurisdiction. Starts taking a preliminary statement from the guy....and then walks off just how far the cows from the left and right of the accident are.
The cop asks the guy..."How fast were you going?" The guy responds..."I was going 55mph". Cop asks again..."How fast were you going? ...the guy responds over and over.."I was going 55, I was going 55!" Cop responds with, "If your gonna stick to that story, you better get your ass out there and pull in both those cows about 100 feet in before the Sheriff gets here!":lol:

Most likely. My buddy took a buck on Sunday he had to track for 3 1/2 hours cause he gut shot it. They are tough.

I've lived in and around the country most of my life, so I've smacked quite a few critters. I always hate it. A few years ago coming home a small herd of deer were on the highway and two cars in front of me were trying to brake and swerve.....there were deer going every where and one of them flew over my hood. I turned around to see what happened because I thought one of them might not be dead. It wasn't - it's back was broken and it was going to lay on that dark highway until it got hit again or died slowly. I have my hand gun with me, so I got out, walked behind it and shot it in the head - then I pulled it off the highway as far as I could. I did the right then, but when I got home I was crying when I told my husband what happened and then I threw up. But I can shoot a deer when I'm hunting and no problem. It just didn't seem fair.
I also hit a barred owl sitting on road kill at night on a dark highway. Not good. As much as I fight it, I am part Native American and raised with alot of stories, so that was pretty super bad luck to do that. I swear for the next three months, I saw more barred owls in the daylight sitting on fence posts, small trees, all close to the road where I was driving....looking at me. Even had one sail low over my head during the day in the woods - and that REALLY spooked me!!

Sorry, couldn't help it. I've a sick twisted sense of humor...no offense met to you or your experiance.
I can't imagine hitting an owl. Birds usually get out of a moving vehicles way don't they? I was taught that to never swerve for birds. An owl...? don't know how big they get where you live...but we don't have many here in Sac town.
As far as deer. During hunting season, don't go driving in our Nor. Cal foothills. Everyone carries their shotguns with them...so if they see a deer...they can pull over and go after it! Makes driving on two lane foothill highways a nightmare! Sides of the road look like parking lots some days! It's a mess!

I was hit by an owl once, driving through central Texas. It was night, and I could see it ahead of me, sitting on a fence post. I wasn't paying much attention to it as I was passing, but it decided to take off at the wrong time, and flew smack into the passenger window.

I did, once, about 7 or 8 years ago. I saw the deer crossing the street ahead of me, and slowed down so I wouldn't hit them. Unfortunately, one straggler I didn't see slammed into the side of my car. I felt horrible afterward because he was only a baby and I hadn't seen him. Didn't do much damage to my car, thankfully. Still had to wait for the cops to come and file a report though.

Question. Is it safe to eat deer hit by a vehicle? I was told it wasn't because of possible internal organ damage and contamination.
You CAN and I've know people who have, but it seems like the blood just shoots through the meat and there are alot of clots. Also, the bone marrow give the meat a really strong taste and if there are broken bones, etc. - yuck. I've known people who removed all the material within the body cavity, it was washed out with salt water and believe it or not, Listerine (you can buy the cheap knock off stuff that does the same thing - poultry producers use it right before packaging). Skinned and hung in a meat processors and then all meat removed from the bone and taken to have sausage made out of it, which is really good.

Certain cuts are tasty. For the most part you will probably find it tough and of a "funny" taste. Best stuff is deer summer sausage or jerky or ground meat. If you are gonna eat steaks, the loin is the only way to go. And does are much better than bucks. Especially younger does.

Personally, I usually just hit small critters (rabbits, skunks, armadillos, 'possums, etc.) I have hit a coyote once.
Just pray you never hit a moose in a car. When I lived in Anchorage, this dude in a Saab hit one, the moose landed on his car roof, and broke the poor man's neck. I've seen a Suburban hit a BIG cow moose, total the SUV, and get up and walk off.
Also REALLY, REALLY pray you never hit a buzzard. I know 2 people who have and it is true that they puke when they get hit. NAAAAAAAAAAASTY!!

I hit a few deer. When I go out at night, I usually have to wake up 5 or more that are sleeping on the lawn in front of my car. They know the routine and walk into the woods now, instead of running into the street!
Everytime a new development goes up, all kinds of critters end up dead on the road!
Cracks me up when I hear people around here say there more animals in the area...when I know there are less. They don't consider that the animals have lost 2/3's of their habitat! Duh!!

Hubby hit a deer on the highway doing about 65 mph. They didn't total his truck and it was around $8,000 worth of damage. Within a year, about a mile up the highway he hit another one. Still didn't total the truck and did about the same amount of damage. Both times at about 5:30 in the morning on his way to work.
I almost hit one with the minivan with all the kids with me. Luckily, I was going slow enough to stop right before hitting her. She stared at me and didn't move until I honked the horn.

When I was still driving a tractor/trailer, I was coming down I-75 in Florida one day. I was driving a conventional tractor (flat nose, no hood).
I noticed a pheasant flying left to right that was going to cross my path. The bird hit the front of the truck right under the drivers side windshield. At my next fuel stop, I saw that it had put a bowling-ball sized dent in the metal under the windshield. I can only imagine the damage it could have caused if it was flying a foot higher or was coming at me directly instead of laterally.....

Haven't hit anything- but, have had a very angry buffalo hit me. Parked in the middle of the road on the refuge, waiting for a herd to cross the street. One of the big bulls turned, faced the Bronco, stomped his foot on the ground, and charged. He rammed his head into the cattle guard, shook his head and walked off. Stupid thing scratched my cattle guard, but didn't cause any real damage.
And my friends wonder why I tell them to NEVER get out of the car to take pictures of the buffalo and longhorn when they are crossing the road. Several people have been gored by them.

YES - I've smacked a full grown doe. Was driving down a road about 10:00pm - @ 35-40mph -
One side, is industrial - the other side - is cornfield. The deer jumped out of the cornfield - smack in front of me - I swerved into the left lane (* oncoming lane - luckily, no-one else was on the road ) - and only clipped its head. No damage to the car. (phew!)
Didn't kill it. Just stunned it - pretty good I imagine. Went back 5 minutes later and it was gone.
---
We've got an overpopulation problem up here - not enough hunters - and my neighbor can only eat so much. ( Guy's gutting a deer every other weekend - he lives on deer & turkey )
---
OUCH - deer road with a 55mph speed limit and tickets for going slow -
The state tells you on roads with deer - don't do over 50 - because all the fatal crashes (driver/passenger) are 50mph & over. Lucky for me - the roads we've got deer on are 25 & 35 - I see em all over the place up here too - not daily though. Sometimes groups of 3-5 at once.

I wasn't driving, but..when I was in high school, me and a buddy were on I-20 at 2 in the morning heading to Atlanta...because we had nothing better to do.
We may have had some beers, but I can't remember...more than likely we had...it was about 20 degrees outside, and we decided to play a game of "freeze out".
If you don't know, freeze out is a car game where you see who bitches out and turns on the heat first...we turned on the air, rolled down the windows, and were riding at about 80 mph with no shirts on...for some reason we both started screaming...I guess thinking this would cause adrenaline to kick in and warm us up...neither one of us were going to lose.
All of a sudden we see something in the road...halfway between both lanes...my buddy slammed the brakes, but it was too late.
We hit what would have been an 8 point buck, but after impact it was 5 and a half points.
He was so ****ed he jumped out of the truck, ran over to the deer, which was laying there kicking and twitching, trying to stay alive...and he started kicking and beating the **** out of the deer screaming, "My ****ing truck, my ****ing truck!!"
Totally screwed up his bumper grill one head light...his alignment was so screwed the steering wheel had to be turned all the way to the right to go straight...it was a fun ride home...bot airbags had deployed...
We had loaded the deer in the bed of the truck, and when we got to his house he went to his room, came back out with a hunting knife and castrated the poor deer...he drove around with deer testicles hanging from his antenna for several months after that.
Needless to say, my buddy was ordered by the court a few years later to start going to counseling.
My condolences to any members of PETA that may read this post.

I've encountered many deer in my travels. The closest i've come to hitting one, was one that grazed the side my truck......it didn't cause any damage or apparently injure the deer........the secret to my success is that when in deer country, I scan from side to side......if I see any sign of a deer, I slow down immediately. If they are simply standing at the side of the road frozen, I honk my horn until they spook and run.
Deer can be a real hazard.

Twice for me...
Once, I was travelling in a GOV to Traverse City to meet with the recruiters, and hit a deer on the way up. The CO is never happy about someone wrecking his vehicles. The NCOIC was all slap-happy because he knew what I was in for when I returned to the headquarters. He had to also travel to the headquarters for a CO's meeting, so as I was following him back, he hit a deer. It's always much better when there is someone else getting his azz chewed right next to you...

Just tapped a couple of them.
However, a couple of months ago, a buddy of mine bought a snowmobile, and was trailering it home late at night, by himself, in his pickup truck.
He also bought a new helmet. While he was driving, he thought he'd try on the new helmet again. He just got the strap tightened, when he hit a deer.
He wasn't buckled in, and his helmeted head hit the roof of the truck. His neck was sore, but otherwise unscathed. If he hadn't been wearing the helmet, he'd probably be toast.
How often do people get into a car accident wearing a helmet?

A deer jumped out of some tall grass directly in front of my brand new car (hadn't even made the first payment). I was going about 55; she mangled the left front end then flipped around to smash in my door.
I think they stand by the side of the road waiting on the newer models to jump out in front of them. I have never known anyone to hit on in a junker.

My expererience was like many others I have read here. The deer hit me. I was driving my Ford Aerostar van at night on Niles Canyon Road near Fremont California, and caught a glimpse of the deer to my left. I hit the brakes, but the deer kept coming and ran right into my front left fender. The impact and the forward movement of my car caused the deer to snap around and hit my door with his hindquarters. The impact was so hard, that I thought surely he was dead, but after pulling off the road, I got out and looked and there was no sign or sound of the deer anywhere..... well, except the impression of his ass in my door. :eh:

One jumped into the side of my friend's car, and unfortunately the window was down. Deer hair everywhere inside.

Deers are real tough. That's for sure.

Are you part of the "Bambi Killers Club"?
I used to go to restraunt in Colorado Springs that specialized in serving wild game entrees. I used to order venison roast with a side of hassenpfieffer. We kidded about ordering a 'Bambi & Thumper'.:))

Came across a semi that had hit a black angus cow. The cow wasn't really hurt (she was up walking about), but the bumper on the semi was bent in to the point it was embedded in the front tire.

I didn't mention that when the deer hit my Chevette I was
a young girl and pretty spooked by "Jason" movies.
It's well after midnight, no house lights on around,
before the age of cheap cell phones,
I sit there and wait for a passing car (my car was undrivable)
while watching the unmoving figure with eagle eyes
for any movement because "Jason" never dies.
Jason could transform himself to look like a deer
in my over-active imagination! lol
And then the best part. Four women stopped to help me.
They were coming home from a animal activist meeting.
They comforted me and took me to one of their homes
so I could call the police and my boyfriend to come pick me up.
Then all four of them brought me back to the accident
and waited with me for everyone to show up.
I knew what was going to happen and I tried
to assure them that I would be fine and that
they could go home, but they insisted on staying
with me..
To the horror of these four very kind woman,
my boyfriend (now husband) and the police officer load the deer
into the back of my boyfriends truck
while talking about what a good
clean hit I made and how tasty it was going to be.

Hell, I was run into by a deer in Germany.
At night.
In the forest.
On foot.
We sorta stepped on the spot where he was bedded down. He butted me and I punched the little SOB 'cause he screwed up the night attack we were gonna spring on some Jaegers. Someone shot a flare after him while he was high-tailing it out of the AO.

i don't run over pigeons. i havent encountered deer, moose, coyote or anything of that sort. just squirrels, pigeons, cats, etc... and it breaks my heart if i see them run over by some reckless, speeding moron on the road. but never had that inopportune moment yet and i hope i won't *knock on wood*

I hit an armadillo once. That was an odd sound.
And one time I hit a wild turkey.

Years ago I was with a guy who totaled the front end of a completely cherry mustang when he hit a pregnant cow on a dark road.
He wasn't speeding, the limit was 50, but the road was unlit and a large truck coming our way with its brights on blinded us and we didn't see it until it was too late. It was standing crossways taking up the entire lane. There was no way to avoid it. What a mess! Oh was he ****ed!

Almost, late night, rural highway doing 60 in a '62 Beetle. Out of nowhere four deer running left to right across the road, no time to react at all. And I drove right through them and missed them all! Two passed just in front and two just behind. Talk about lucky cause I'll tell you when it comes to Deer vs. VW bug at 60mph, there is no winner.

They've jumped out in front of us a couple of times, but haven't hit one. This past spring was the worst. My husband was going 45 mph and slammed on the brakes, almost putting the car on it's nose as THREE started across the road.
Did they run? Get startled? Nope, they just looked at us and continued to amble across the highway.
My children discovered what seatbelts actually do.
I had a skunk hit the underside of my car once (decades ago), didn't get sprayed. Never hit anything else that I know of.
The deer situation here is escalating. We try hard to keep an eye out, but I fear that one of these days our luck is going to run out.
