You know that movie "Steel Magnolias"? My favorite scene is at the funeral when Sally Field's character is talking about wanting to HIT someone and she is sobbing (I first saw that movie right after my mom died and I deeply identified with what the character was saying). When Olympia Dukakis pulls Ouisa forward and tells Sally Field to "Hit HER!" It was so shocking that it made me laugh and laugh and laugh.
Most of you are aware that my mom died right before my senior year of high school started. At my mom's wake, my best friend's ex-boyfriend was phobic of dead bodies. The ONLY reason he came was to show his support for me. His new girlfriend came to show her support for him, since he had so much trouble dealing with any kind of death. The new girlfriend and my best friend were mortal enemies since middle school when the other young woman pushed my friend off the chorus bleachers. So that he wouldn't feel like he had to go over to the casket with my mom's body, she came over while I was standing there and was talking to me with my friend standing beside me. I was somewhat confused since this person had never given me the time of day throughout the three years we had been attending school together and suddenly she is trying to talk to me at a time when I was having enough trouble dealing with my own emotions. As we were talking I asked, "Yeah, you never met my mom, did you?" She replied, "No" and I said, "Mom, Summer; Summer, Mom" as though I was introducing her to my mother's dead body.
I was completely serious. After all, mom was still alive. She wasn't in her BODY, but she was alive SOMEWHERE!
Her face went white and she looked at me like I was insane and got away from me as fast as she could. My friend busted out laughing and said that it was the most priceless moment of her life. At the time, I had no clue what was so funny, but it was such a relief to laugh. To this day, my friend and I laugh over how absolutely numb I had to have been to have done that. Even at my 10 year high school reunion, the poor girl still acted like I was crazy. Sometimes, the saddest moments of life have the greatest moments of humor to lighten our load, if only we look for them.

I'm trying to decide what was the most fun I had at school with classmates. I wouldn't say it was fun, exactly, more like memorable. Everyone knew I didn't lie--but there came a day three boys desperately needed me to tell a lie. They had about thirty minutes to teach me. The kicker was that they needed me to lie to a priest.
Thinking back to elementary school, for me, I had fun most of the time (even if I don't remember specific things). There were no other girls in my grade, but I had a really fun friend that was in the grade below mine. But our best times were playing at her house....her mother didn't work (mine did) and was very creative and fostered any creative idea the kids came up with. They had one big room that was curtained off to create two bedrooms (they had 4 kids and not a huge house)...and we would make up plays and use the that room to put on the plays. Her mom would help us make props. Any sibling that wasn't in the play was part of the audience. *LOL* Shades of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland -- "Hey kids! Let's put on a show!"

I wonder how many kids still put on plays? I know my brothers and sisters and I did, but there was quite a group of us. My two daughters did not. I don't know if it was only because there were two of them, or if they never cared to.

We got the idea from Little Women. I don't think my daughters ever read that book. Ouch. I think maybe I should insist that they do over the summer.

Catching fireflies. Playing hide and go seek. Marshmallows at the campfire. Hiding in the closet and pretending I was in a cave. Reading under the covers with a flashlight (got in trouble, but it was worth it! ;) ). Riding my bike at the campground. Deep sea fishing with my dad on a charter boat. Eating fresh caught perch around the campfire. The summer the library had a 'bingo board' to get kids to vary what they read (I blacked out my board and won a book from the library for it). Using a kitchen spoon to dig a hole in the front yard and pretending the spoon was a person going swimming in a pool. Ice pops with the neighbors kids. Block parties where we raced our Big Wheels. Learning to roller skate on one skate at a time, until I was brave enough to try both skates. Baking with mom. Going on tours of Smithsonian with Mom and my brother or with the whole family.

not fun. never had 'FUN' in school, except occasionally. memorable: Brian G eating almost everyone's cups (containing 3) of prunes.......he had to have about...mmmm 60 at least.....
everyone was watching him and cheering. I never knew if he exploded. It wasn't talked about.
Basketball in gym my sophomore year. friend walking through wanting to know what game we were playing, because there were so many elbows being thrown and tripping, he couldn't quite figure out the game. that was fun
riding on the cheerleader bus for basketball games. very fun. would come home with no voice left.....very fun.

Alright, I'll jump in this Nostalgia Fest too.
Going fishing with my dad...Staying the weekends with my grandparents, and every Friday I would ride with Papaw to the Class 6 store (liquor store for those of you militarily challenged) so he could pick up a case of Old Milwaukee for the weekend...I always got a candy bar out of the deal...Watching Justin Wilson and Hee Haw with them on Saturday nights...Playing in the huge tree in their neighbors' yard with the other neighborhood kids...Mr. Rick and Miss Molly didn't mind us playing in the tree, they always said that was what it was for and it was nice to see kids enjoying it again, since their's had grown up...Pine cone wars...In the summer I'd go to Oklahoma to my other grandmother for a few weeks, and my cousins and I would have walnut and persimmon wars...I liked being back in Alabama, pine cones didn't hurt as much. :))
Going to the creek down from our house and catching crawfish...riding Lucky Gold Strike, that was my Palamino Quarter Horse...staying up late and waiting for my big brother to come home so I could harass him about his girlfriend(s) cause at 8 years old girls were yucky....Man, so many memories...good times.

my daughter hasn't read Little Women either. I have suggested it innumerable times. I loved all three of the books and can't imagine not reading them. I read them for the first time in 5th grade. Cried and cried when Beth died.
When we were in middle school, my dad built an addition on our house. There was a large opening where the fireplace was going (it's like 10 feet across) we used that as our opening for our stage and got old curtains for the curtains and used the window openings as like peekout areas for parts of it.
We did Rowan and Martin sketches....with the old man on the tricycle (Arte Johnson) and Gladys (Ruth Buzzi) among other things. All the moms had to come watch and we put folding chairs in the back yard as the seats (they had aisles and everything....)

It seems as though there should be something inherently wrong with that, but they still taste wonderful....

She would be the lion tamer and my younger brother and I would be the dogs or lions or tigers or occasionally the elephants, giraffes, water buffalo. One time, we tried 'walking' down the stairs like the dog does (on hands and knees, head first going down). I don't cry at plays or movies, either. I was never a crier as a kid, but during my mid teens, I cried a couple of oceans. I swore once I got past that, I'd never cry again. Of course, I do, but usually it takes going through great stress and then being surprised by something totally unrelated. I hate crying when it's me.

Morning Devotional
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad. (Proverbs 12:25)
TODAY, ENCOURAGE SOMEBODY (1)
The nineteenth-century writer Walt Whitman struggled for years to get anyone interested in his poetry. In the midst of his discouragement he received a life-changing note from an admirer of his work. The note read, "Dear Sir, I am not blind to the worth of the wonderful gift of Leaves of Grass. I find it the most extraordinary piece of wit and wisdom that America has yet contributed. I greet you at the beginning of a great career." It was signed by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Whitman enjoyed a long career and is now considered one of the giants of American literature. But when times were tough he needed encouragement to keep going. And he's not alone.
When we're on the brink of failure, the right word at the right time can keep us in the game. When we're too tired or discouraged to keep going, an act of compassion can give us new strength. Encouragement is one of the central themes of the Bible: "Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad" (Pr 12:25). "Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees" (Isa 35:3). "For I, the Lord your God, will hold your right hand, saying to you, 'Fear not, I will help you'" (Isa 41:13).
Encouragement doesn't deny the problem; it enables us to overcome it. It doesn't validate stubbornness or stupidity; it simply corrects and guides us in the right path. It doesn't leave us alone to carry the burden, it lets us know that God is present to help and strengthen us. So today, encourage somebody!

The actress I worked for, her husband was the former CEO of Pepsico. Among some of photos on the wall was one of him with a few guys I didn't recognize. Since most of the photos were of quite famous celebrities they hob-nobbed with, I asked who was in the photo with him. He told me, "Oh that was at my birthday party. CCR was the band. That's them."

Morning Devotional
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad. (Proverbs 12:25)
Today, Encourage Somebody (2)
Henry Ford and Thomas Edison were friends; they met at a convention sponsored by Edison's company where Ford worked as an engineer. Someone introduced Ford to Edison as "a young man who has made a gas car." Ford and Edison talked a while about the automobile, then Edison banged his fist on the table with excitement. "You have it! Your car is self-contained and carries its own power plant." Ford later recalled, "No man up to then had given me any encouragement. I had hoped that I was headed right. Sometimes I knew that I was, sometimes I only wondered, but here, out of a clear sky, the greatest inventive genius in the world had given me complete approval."
Sir Isaac Newton is best known for his Theory of Gravitation and description of the Three Laws of Motion. But Newton might never have published his work had it not been for Edmond Halley. A well-respected scientist in his own right, Halley visited Newton at Cambridge to discuss a problem he was working on, only to discover that Newton had already solved it. Halley encouraged Newton to publish his work, and even offered to do it at his own expense. The result was the publication of Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica in 1687, which laid the groundwork for the study of mathematics and changed the way people see the world.
Who can you encourage to do great things? Who has God put into your life to cheer on, raise up, or assist on their journey? When you help others to do the things God created them to do, you share in their achievement.

Religion Forum Post of the Week
No. Unity for the sake of unity is in many instances the same as mass (spiritual in this instance) suicide.
I will not compromise my beliefs, convictions, and what I know is right for the sake of unity for unity.
We should all be working towards making sure that we personally are following Christ, his teachings, and the words of his Apostles as closely as we can.
There will be a unification one day, when that last trumpet sounds. The name above the door of a building will have nothing to do with who is found worthy. It will be the relationship the individual had with his or her God.
