Didn't you see today's news headlines? It said California lawmakers are actually thinking about talking about doing away with State welfare. In the (unlikely) event that comes to pass, we would be the first state to do so.

I get this urge to go over there and do some filing. I'd sort the thing into various neat little sub-topics, label them, set up a cross-index with a nice little color-coded schemes. Then I'd probably write summaries. You know, that could keep me out of trouble and well-behaved for quite a lengthy time.

True. Honestly I have no prblem with welfare. Some folks don't make enough money to afford health insurance for their kids, or buy groceries plus pay their other bills. I've been there I've been on food stamps and my kids on Medicaid. I was able to better myself and get off of it. Everyone needs a little help every now and then. But allowing people to abuse the system is what is the problem. Some able bodied people will live off the gubmint all their lives. That ain't right, get up and go to work.
The current welfare system, state and federal, needs to be completely done away with and refocused. Give people a timeline. You have X amount of days to find work. Save it for folks who really need it.

Yes. We were without health insurance for almost all of last year--talk about a year of holding our breath hoping nothing would happen to any of the four of us. We've really messed up our health coverage here in America. First we limit those who wish to pursue an education and career in medicine, making for a shortage in doctors; meanwhile technology is moving so fast and is so expensive, I'm wondering why taxpayers don't take over that part of the bill. Taxes pay for facilities and equipment; patients and insurance pay for services and supplies. Don't even get me started on pharmaceuticals. My medicine cabinent has one bottle in it. Aspirin.
As for the rest of welfare, I vote we go back to local charities. Let people know who they are helping; let people who are being helped be helped by actual people not the state.

Caveat. When I reported cbut1 for his extremely disrespectful characterization of Pentecostalism last week I did so because he was dissing a religious group not because he was mischaracterizing my faith.
I would and have done the same thing when people diss Catholics, Jews or Mormons on this forum but I don't feel any need to "defend" Pentecostalism. Why do you guys feel like you need to defend Catholicism? Seems to me it has been around long enough to stand on its own merits, which are many.

A lot of the defense is correcting misinformation that is continually being presented as fact.
There was also the discussion that someone's harmless joke is some else's disrespect. After all this time in the Religion Forum, I still have a tough time identifying violations.

I'm not certain. But.....you are honestly asking why we would want to defend the actual doctrines of our faith from mischaracterizations? Call me crazy, but I'd just as soon someone disagree with what I actually believe, rather than what they (erroneously) think I believe, or what they have (erroneously) been led to think I believe by someone mischaracterizing what it is I believe. Someone comes in and says "Catholics worship Mary" and you think I shouldn't defend what, in my opinion, is an assault on the truth? Someone says Trinitarians are polytheists and you think I shouldn't correct that gross mischaracterization?

But the next time someone actually comes in and says Pentecostals believe something that Pentecostals don't actually believe, you just sit all quiet-like, and don't correct them. That's your prerogative. But if you correct them, just know that as far as I'm concerned, you'll be "defending" your faith.
I would and have done the same thing when people diss Catholics, Jews or Mormons on this forum but I don't feel any need to "defend" Pentecostalism.Like I said, next time someone says Pentecostals believe something that they don't, don't "defend" it. I'm all for charity, that would be the best thing.
As far as health care goes...and I realized this sometime in the few years I was selling insurance...The problem is people running to the Dr. over the smallest thing...They've got sniffles they go to the Dr....They got a hangnail, they go to the Dr...I'm exaggerating, but not much...When they go they pay their 10, 20 or 30 dollar copay..The Dr. then runs a multitude of useless tests, and sticks it to the insurance company at a jacked up rate. They'll charge as high as the insurance company will allow the to do so...
I don't have regular health insurance, nor does my wife...We have a major medical plan, which is fairly inexpensive...It will pay in the event of surgery, fractures, terminal illness, hospital stays, etc...Things like the flu, sinus infection, bronchitis we pay out of pocket...and guess what...it's not that expensive...they don't run all the useless tests, they check me out, give me a shot, prescribe some meds and it's not even $100 minus the prescriptions...
If more people would be willing to pay out of pocket there wouldn't be all this whining...And if the insurance companies had stricter guidelines the Dr.'s wouldn't be jacking up their fees.
Technology is a separate issue...should the taxpayers pay for that...if there wasn't 9 million useless things we were already paying for then maybe.

I haven't been to the doctor in years. I suppose the closest I get is the clinic to get the TB tests I'm required to take (for teaching) every few years. I know how to take care of cold and flu. I don't even bother with flu shots.
I know what you mean--I hear of people going to the doctor for very minor things, and I suppose that does add up for insurance companies. The tests are another thing I really don't understand--it seems most of them are run to rule things out that aren't too likely anyway.
One thing I've noticed as a P.E. teacher is how the notes have changed over the years. Kids can now get notes from their doctor that pretty much say, "When Johnny doesn't feel like participating in P.E., excuse him." Johnny has no medical condition, but just in case he might, the note is written.

I'll go with "mischaracterization" first:
If I feel I know enough about that faith to do so, yes. Although I always qualify my statement by letting people know it is MY understanding of another's faith and whatever someone of that faith says should trump what I say about it every time. If you haven't seen me do that regarding the Mormon faith, then you simply haven't been in the right threads at the right time. I don't have to agree one whit with a faith to at least be able to understand it and correct a few mischaracterizations, as long as someone has taken the time to educate me on it.
And as for reporting people that "diss" other faiths:
If you haven't seen "us guys" reporting people for disrespectful posts about other faiths, then you haven't been paying attention.

With all due respect Teriri. I don't recall seeing it and I have been paying attention. When is the last time a Catholic started a thread in TTTM about sombody disrespecting Pentecostals, Mormons or Baptists?
All I am really saying is that CID or I will bring those things up because we view all Christians, regardless of the name over the Church door as our brothers and sisters in Christ and don't feel that there is anything special about "our Church, because we are all part of THE Church. Call me overly sensitive but it doesn't seem like all y'all feel the same way.
That is why I have a problem with the whole "one true church" thing whether it refers to Catholic, Mormon or Baptist. It divides the body of Christ and I am against that. Invariably the people who feel they are in the "one true church" feel that true unity in the faith will only be attained when all Christians become part of "their" church.
I just really have a problem with it. I won't rant about it anymore though.

I'm sorry that I do not catalog such things, file by reporter's faith, and time stamp them for you, RayMan. I'm also sorry that others might have been faster at reporting, because there are plenty of "you beat me to it"s. Additionally, I am not always certain what constitutes disrespect in the eyes of a moderator, and I have to feel very sure that someone has gone far past any line I might draw. And I'm sorry that your join date is so much later that you haven't witnessed everything that's ever happened in this regard.
However, I am not sorry enough to start keeping statistics for you, Ray. Keeping tally isn't really my thing.

But it might be overly sensitive to think that just because the adherents to one faith or another believe their Church "the one, true Church" that they do not also view all Christians, regardless of the name over the Church door, as our brothers and sisters in Christ, or that they are not also part of "THE Church" (body of believers).

It is difficult for me to differentiate what I believe (and that would include all the doctrine and theology) from my faith. I've always thought of my faith as being what I believe.
I have to wonder if I am alone in this.
If I am using the wrong word, then I apologize for that. But I'm still not sure it is the wrong word, just maybe not specific enough.

Forgive me, I don't know that much Catholic terminology, and wouldn't pretend to, so if this doesn't come across clearly ask me to elaborate.
Faith is one's belief in God...Your faith is in Christ, just as mine is, just as Ray's, Meri's, hben and anyone else that believes Christ is the Son of God, he died on a cross for our transgressions and on the third day rose again.
Doctrine or theology is (at least to me) what a church teaches and practices as in their traditions and whatnot...I was raised Episcopal, within the Episcopal church we had a very formal service, extremely structured...much like the Catholic Church...we had incense burning, we took the Holy Eucharist every Sunday, and we all drank from the same cup...We had (and I still have mine someplace) the Book of Common Prayer which we would read from every Sunday along with the Bible lesson that the Priest gave, we had confession, I was Confirmed when I was 13...so very much like the Roman Catholic Church, I would assume...we didn't have much emphasis on the Spiritual Gifts, i.e. tongues, healing, discernment, etc...
Now, in the Pentecostal church we have much emphasis on the Spiritual Gifts...our services are structured, but more loosely...you never know what may happen...the structure pretty much stops at "Service starts at 11." Anything after that we believe that the Holy Spirit is in control, we may be out of their by noon or it may be 2...some churches may take Communion every Sunday, some only once a month...
The thing to remember with Pentecostal churches is that we aren't all the same, there are so many denominations that fall into the category of Pentecostal...same as the term Evangelical and Reformed...Within each denomination there is a doctrine or a theology that they may go by, within that are the "rules" of the denomination....
So, our faith is the same, since we all believe in Christ...just the way we teach and practice our faith is what differs...It's my opinion that none is the right or wrong way, so as long as it's Biblically based, it comes down to how we feel we can serve the Lord the best, how we can learn of him and his ways the best, and how we are comfortable worshiping him.

I think you have been clear here. We simply differ in a few things.
First, let me say that my understanding of "faith" isn't some sort of Catholic terminology -- it's what I've understood the word to mean for as long as I've known the word. For me, it has always been synonymous with "belief." So, yes, my faith is my belief in God, in Jesus as the Christ, that we share. But, to me, my faith is also my belief in specific doctrine and theology. They are also what I believe, not merely traditions (note: lower case "t"...I'm not talking about Sacred Traditions, which I would never describe as "mere"). I believe them to be part of a deposit of faith from God incarnate Himself, not "whatnot". It's a matter of scope (I think that's the word I'm looking for). How broad, or how narrow the belief system you intend for the word to encompass in a given sentence or context. You said Faith is one's belief in God.. and then went on to say Your faith is in Christ, just as mine is, just as Ray's, Meri's, hben and anyone else that believes Christ is the Son of God, he died on a cross for our transgressions and on the third day rose again. But that would leave out Jews or Muslims and they clearly have faith in God. So, if you (or Ray) say "Christians are one faith" you are narrowing down the scope, are you not? Narrowing it to those that believe in Jesus. And later in your post, you narrowed the scope to "Biblically based." What is the substantive difference between narrowing down the scope of "faith in God" (I guess that would be to describe theists?) to "faith in God and Jesus as the Christ that is Biblically-based" (to describe Christians), and narrowing the scope to "faith in God and Jesus as the Christ that is based in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition" (to describe a specific denomination or, set of beliefs)? It's all faith, isn't it?
If I understand your and RayMan's beliefs enough to know that when you say "faith" you only mean one thing, then that is helpful. It would be just as helpful for you to know that when I say "my faith" it could be meant in the broader term (Christianity) or the narrower one (Christianity as taught in Catholic doctrine). It could even be meant in the much broader term (those who believe in God).
I am very sorry if RayMan is unhappy that I, like some Christians, believe there is correct and incorrect doctrine and thus include it when we speak of our "faith". I love and respect him -- and you, too, of course! -- but I cannot NOT believe what I believe to be true. I will just have to live with his disappointment in me.

I think you have been clear here. We simply differ in a few things.
I try. ;)
First, let me say that my understanding of "faith" isn't some sort of Catholic terminology -- it's what I've understood the word to mean for as long as I've known the word.
I wasn't saying that in regard to the word "faith", I think that one is pretty much universal in it's meaning...where the difference comes in is what we perceive doctrine and theology as.
My thoughts are this...the only doctrine I need to follow is that of the Bible...any other texts or writings which cannot be Biblically supported are simply man made rules and regulations that I don't subscribe to...certain theologies are no more than a man's opinion on God and scripture, sometimes it's right sometimes it's not.
.I'm not talking about Sacred Traditions, which I would never describe as "mere"). I believe them to be part of a deposit of faith from God incarnate Himself, not "whatnot".
I wasn't referring to the Sacred Traditions as "whatnot"...that's just a term I'll throw in from time to time as a filler. ;)
In fact, as I said earlier, I don't know that much about the Catholic Church so I'm not sure that I even know what the Sacred Traditions are...I may, a lot of times different denominations use different terms to describe the same thing.
It's a matter of scope (I think that's the word I'm looking for). How broad, or how narrow the belief system you intend for the word to encompass in a given sentence or context.
I'm with you.
You said and then went on to say But that would leave out Jews or Muslims and they clearly have faith in God.
Jews and Muslims are not pertinent to this conversation, I don't doubt their faith in God...There are different sects of Islam but they all worship Allah.
There are Orthodox Jews and Reformed Jews, perhaps others I'm unaware of but they all worship the same God.
Just as all Christians worship the same God.
So, if you (or Ray) say "Christians are one faith" you are narrowing down the scope, are you not? Narrowing it to those that believe in Jesus. And later in your post, you narrowed the scope to "Biblically based."
Christians are one faith and their faith is Biblically based, so in my mind that's the same thing.
What is the substantive difference between narrowing down the scope of "faith in God" (I guess that would be to describe theists?) to "faith in God and Jesus as the Christ that is Biblically-based" (to describe Christians), and narrowing the scope to "faith in God and Jesus as the Christ that is based in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition" (to describe a specific denomination or, set of beliefs)? It's all faith, isn't it?
Now I live in the heart of the Bible Belt...if I say to my neighbor, "Jim has faith in God." They are gonna know that I mean Jim is a Christian. But if I was in somewhere like NYC where there's a melting pot of different cultures and religions and I made the same statement some would ask, "Is Jim Jewish?" "Is he Buddhist?" "Is he Muslim?" So in that situation I would have to narrow it down and say, "Jim has faith in Christ." Now there's no question...
It can be narrowed down further by saying, "Jim is Lutheran." Now, I've not only told the person what faith Jim is but also what doctrine he follows within that faith.
So yes, it is all faith.
When I speak of "my faith" I am typically referring to my specific beliefs as a Pentecostal Christian, when I say "our faith" I'm referring to Christians in general...and when I simply say "faith" that would be the generic term for belief in God, no matter what ones religion is.
So, maybe we're on the same page here?
I am very sorry if RayMan is unhappy that I, like some Christians, believe there is correct and incorrect doctrine and thus include it when we speak of our "faith". I love and respect him -- and you, too, of course! -- but I cannot NOT believe what I believe to be true. I will just have to live with his disappointment in me.
I love and respect you as well Miss Terria. And I too believe that there are incorrect ways and doctrines...but if a Christian's faith is Biblically based then I don't believe it is incorrect.

The differences of doctrine and practice. I acknowledge it. Should I be using a different word than "faith"?
Apparently we have differing concepts of what we mean when using the word. When speaking of "the faith" I use it the way I believe Jude did.
Jud 1:3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.
I believe "the faith" is Christianity, not Baptist, not Pentecostal nor Catholic.
I see Judaism as a different faith. I see Hinduism or Islam as different faiths. I don't see anyone who has put their faith in Christ for salvation as being of a different faith than myself since I have also placed my faith in Him.
I am sorry to have upset you and if you think I have bad feelings of any sort towards you or any other Catholic then I have done a extremely poor job of expressing myself. Which I apparently have done and which I apologize for. I probably should have kept my thoughts to myself on this subject.
I simply and sincerely don't get the concept of "defending the faith" when discussing religious doctrine with other Christian believers. But then again it does sound like I have a different viewpoint than many people on what the words "the faith" signify.

A factor you may not be considering is how each of us perceives what should be reported to TTTM. I may not be quick to go there, but I think I am quick to speak up in threads here.
A second factor, RayMan, is simple deference. I have great confidence in you and other Pentecostals. When I read the post in question, perhaps even before you saw it, I truly didn't know whether it would be taken as good-natured ribbing or disrespect. So, yes, I held back. When you wrote it was disrespect, then it was you I supported, not by going to TTTM, but by stating my vote that the post be deleted. I still don't think cbut1 meant anything mean in his post, but nor did he seem to be willing to accept it was inappropriate given where we are and those present.
Third, I do try to let the parties involved handle matters as they think best. You may have noticed this when Tex and Mike had their differences over a discussion I was involved in. I would have handled it differently, but I completely respect their decisions to handle it in the manner they did.

No apology needed, RayMan. I, for one, am glad you took time to express your thoughts because they certainly are worth the time to consider and mull over. It also helps us to understand how you are look at faith.
I still believe it is important for me to correct misrepresentations of Catholic teachings (perhaps that is the more precise word). I feel if I take time to correct what some have wrong, it could be a step in showing others that our different denominations are not as widely split as they may believe. I believe Christian unity should matter to all of us.

Morning Meri,
I should have simply made my statement about "defending the faith" against other Christians being something I don't understand and not tried to illustrate my point. It seems that the point is being ignored in favor of telling me why my illustration is wrong.
One of the next courses on my to do list for the General Ed requirement for the degree I am pursuing is English Comprehension and Writing. I think I had best take that this next quarter to improve my communication skills. Not to try and change people's beliefs or attempt to force them to agree with mine, just to be more comprehensible to the good folk here in the RF.

I am curious about a matter kind of related to what we have been discussing. When LoneStarHero started the Flying Spaghetti Monster thread here in the Religion Forum, I was hoping we could all ignore it, and that it would slip away. That was a thread I felt disrespectful both to God and to all who believe in God. It was nicely down the page when you bumped it back up. I've been trying to understand why you did that. Truly, I don't mean to be critical--it really is just an overwhelming curiosity.

You speak here about defending "the faith" and here is what I said (bolding mine, just as you bolded the entire sentence previously):
Also...when I see someone mischaracterizing my faith I am compelled to defend it.
As I said, it may be good to know that you use the word "faith" in only one way. But it would be helpful if you realized that I use it in both broad and narrower terms. And since that sentence was me having to justify (and yes, that is EXACTLY what I felt I was being asked to do) my participation in the Trinity thread, it might have been a clue that I might be defending my faith (which to me is synonymus with belief) in the doctrine of the Trinity.
I will only add this: you can disagree with me regarding faith, doctrine, theology -- all that -- every day of the week and twice on Sunday, and not hurt me. What hurt me was your very strong implication that I do not defend those in this forum who are not Catholic.

CID, i'd rather people went to their doctor for sniffles and a hangnail than come to the emergency department for same, and they do it CONSTANTLY.
as to paying out of pocket, it's like my mom was saying regarding a commercial for a local HMO. The commercial talked about how much money they saved going to xyz hmo.
and the kicker of the commercial was 'with the money we saved we went to disneyworld', to which my mom said, "this is the problem with health care, people's priorities are wrong. They want health care for cheap and to have money for vacations."
we don't have our priorities in order. Wants come before needs and most people can't tell the difference any more.

Actually Terria if you go back over my earlier post you will see that I put quotes around the phrase "the faith," it is in no way correct to say that I only view faith in only one way.
Most Pentecostals have a different view of faith than other Christians. We see lots of differents types of faith listed in the N.T. When I write faith with "the" in front of it as in the verse I quoted from Jude I am speaking, as I believe Jude was of the whole ball of wax which encompasses THE Christian Faith, not my personal faith in Christ, not my faith for healing, my faith that God will deliver me from every evil think that attacks my faith, not my faith that my kids will all turn out alright because they were brought up in "THE Faith" and their mom and I pray for them "in" faith.
The N.T. speaks of many different manifestations of faith. Strong faith, weak faith, great faith, little faith, no faith. In all these contexts the faith referred to is describing actively trusting God and believing in both his ability and willingness to deliver and protect according to the promises in His word. It's a Pentecostal thing.
Please accept my apology for hurting your feelings. That was not my intent. The treatment of Catholicism as "a faith" or "the faith" separate from the rest of the Christian faith community is just something rubs my fur the wrong way whether it is being done by Catholics or non-Catholics.
It never occurs to me to present "my faith" as Pentecostalism. My faith is in Christ and is therefore "the Christian faith." The fact that I am part of a different subset of Christianity means nothing to me when dealing with other believers who consider themselves Christians.
I might start a thread on the many different manifestations of personal faith there are within "the faith" called Christianity.
BTW - I am sorry that I gave you the idea I was singling you out for censure. I have indeed seen you stick up for those who are outside your own subset of Christian belief. I should have been more clear in pointing out that I was talking about what I see as a general pattern with a number of our Catholic posters rather than trying to accuse you personally of not caring for non-Catholic Christian believers.

That's fine. Please note that what sent you off on your rant (your word, not mine) was not me saying "THE faith" but "MY faith." Perhaps you can understand my surprise (among a few other emotions) at being the recipient of said rant.
That it doesn't occur to you is fine for you, Ray. That it occurs to me to present "MY faith" as everything I believe (including doctrines that may or may not be shared by any other denomination) when discussing doctrine (hello? Trinity thread? The thing that started this?), was not, in my humble opinion, worthy of what I received. By the way, apology accepted.
Well, I am part of "us guys" and Hadassah is part of "us guys" and Meriweather is part of "us guys" so when you say "I don't recall seeing it and I have been paying attention" that includes me, and them, IMO. So...when you take your class on English Comprehension and Writing, revisit this whole conversation, and maybe you can let me know where each of us messed up in that regard.
The apology contained in this last paragraph was the only one that mattered to me. It was that implication that had me crying myself to sleep last night and the apology is the one that has me crying at my desk this morning.

I am perfectly willing to take the blame for muddying the waters. Catholic terminology is very difficult for me to understand at times. Terri, I know I speak in behalf of everyone when I say I am so sorry that you are in tears.
One point that should be made RayMan, and was made recently in TTTM, is that people do have a choice. We can choose to ignore, and let an incident slip away without comment, or we can make a report to TTTM. It is an individual's best judgment that comes into play on whether to report or not.
Not making a report, in my opinion, is no indication what-so-ever, that a person is allowing anyone or any group, to be mocked or disrespected. We all know the moment a report is made, a hundred times, perhaps even a thousand times, more attention is given to a post that would have otherwise been forgotten an instant later.
We know each other well enough here that we should be able to trust the decisions each makes.
Take heart, Terri. Most of this is simple misunderstanding that needed a chance for airing and clarification.

My foster sister has one son who is my middle daughter's age with some learning disabilities and behavior problems, and a daughter who is a year and a half younger than my youngest. The two children don't have the same father. The boy's father was going to school and doing well. She cheated on him with the girl's father. They got a divorce, and father A left.
The girl's father is an utter sleazeball. He's one of those people you meet and you just can't wait to get out of his presence so you can wash his "slime" off you. (I'm not the only one who feels this way about him.) He's really just a creep. He also has kids my foster sister's age and treats her son like something to wipe off your shoe. A year ago she left him (I don't know if they were married and divorced, or if they just never married, in the end, she's no longer with him.)
I don't speak to her much. We're not unfriendly towards each other, it's just we both have busy lives and not much in common other than kids. (Our parenting styles are very different.) I got a text message from her yesterday out of the blue asking how I was. I told her "fine, you?" She said, "In a word, pregnant--don't tell mom yet."

Morning Devotional
Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak. (James 1:19)
Are You a Good Listener?
Someone quipped, "God gave us two ears and one mouth because we need to listen twice as much as we talk." Learning that means being "quick to listen, slow to speak." Good listening builds relationships. But good listeners aren't born, they're bred! So here are a few suggestions to improve your listening:
(1) Listen without interrupting. Resist the temptation to jump in and finish the sentence, or hijack the floor. Rein yourself in - just listen.
(2) Listen to understand. Try to understand their point of view, feelings, thinking and needs. Good listening is hearing what they actually think, mean or feel, not what you imagine they do. Instead of guessing, ask, "Am I understanding you correctly? Do you mean...? Are you feeling...?" In other words, don't assume - verify.
(3) Listen without judging. Don't rush to conclusions. If what they say doesn't quite add up, keep listening. "He who answers a matter before he hears it, it is folly and shame to him" (Pr 18:13). When you hear more, it may make sense.
(4) Listen without correcting, countering or devaluing. Saying, "That's not the way it was," or, "What did you expect? If you hadn't..." or, "You're just being too sensitive," puts people on guard and stops real communication.
(5) Validate the speaker. Accept their perceptions and feelings as valid expressions of a valued person. "If I understand you correctly, you're thinking...feeling...Am I right?" Ask them to help get you on the same page with them. "Given what you've told me, I can see why you'd feel what you feel," is very validating and will increase their confidence and willingness to consider the solutions you may offer.

what kind of stories??
one from work from many years ago. I was triaging a little old lady and getting her list of medications from her. She said, "i take this and this and this and this and i take FROLIC ACID." I remained very professional and said 'thank you very much, the doctor will be in soon," walked out to the nurse's station and promptly cracked up because she obviously ment FOLIC ACID...
We wrote it in our 'great ED quotes" book.

He was known as Andre.....that's all that's needed...He couldn't speak a word of Greek or Italian...:))
So he usually played the roll of the bodyguard...His partner Jim, who was known as Tex but came from NYC, always made it a point when they were with a dealer to make sure they knew, "Andre don't talk...anything needs to be said, you tell me, don't say a word to Andre or he'll kill you..."
If Andre did speak it was in broken English or German, which of course Pops was fluent in both....or he'd just grunt.
Andre and Tex were in the middle of a big heroin deal with two Turks and an Israeli named David...David was a little weasel looking guy, Andre was big and strong like bull...
They were at this bar discussing the transaction and David had to go to the bathroom, Tex instructed Andre to go with him and keep an eye on him...The bathroom was down a couple of steps, Andre wasn't paying attention, missed a step, twists his ankle and then begins to fluently cuss in English.
David hears this, "I thought you did not know English!!, You are American!!"
Andre picks up the little weasel, pulls his gun and says "One more word and it will be your last."
Little David went running out of the bar...and according to Andre a stream of urine went with him. :))

I'm in my bedroom and my son can't sleep so he decides to crawl in my bed. We're talking and I turn on the fan in my window to cool off my room. Both of us said "ahh!" because the air felt soooo good. Then........I'm saying "Ewww! What's that smell?" at the same time my son is saying "Ewww! I smell skunk!" Choke and be cool or breathe and be hot. What's a gal to do?

Ah, CID, I can’t believe you messed up that story. Here we go again…I’ll start, and then you can take over.
Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived an ogre and four Meri men…not to to be confused with merry men…. They were called “Meri Men” because to them fell the job of protecting this land, called Hannityland, from the likes of people called Meri. The ogre’s name, of course, is Fire Watch. The four men are commonly known as CID, RayMan, Smyrna, and Koushi.
The ogre and the men were all quite content, hunting, fishing, playing football…until, one day... Meri wanders in. “Would you look at that,” noted CID . “She acts like we allow just anyone here.”
“I’ll bet she’ll want to keep a pink pony in the back garden,” RayMan said.
“Doesn’t look to be much of a shopper,” Smyrna added. “You know the type. Won’t help the economy.”
“Worse,” Koushi said, “She’s married.”
“I’m hungry,” said the ogre. “I want taters.”
“Duty first,” said the four men. “We’ve spotted a Meri for you—and now it is up to you to capture her and throw her into the banlands.”
“I suppose,” said the ogre, putting down the football and getting to his feet. (He had just been tackled by CID.)

Good morning beautiful

With you by my side
And when I open my eyes
And see your sweet face
It's a good morning beautiful day
I didn't see the light
I didn't know day from night
I had no reason to care
But since you came along
I can face the dawn
Cause I know you'll be there
Good morning beautiful
How was your night
Mine was wonderful
With you by my side
And when I open my eyes
And see your sweet face
It's a good morning beautiful day
I'll never worry
If it's raining outside
Cause in here with you girl
The sun always shines
Good morning beautiful
How was your night
Mine was wonderful
With you by my side
And when I open my eyes

Absolutely! I mean, I have not! (Done much worse that is. I am still alive.)
In any case, I agree the problem is not with me making the ogre Fire Watch. The conflict in the story clearly is that CID has succeeded in tackling Fire Watch, and now is trying to distract him by pointing out an innocent passerby. Will the ruse work? I think not. CID might want to think about running--but as the story is now in his court, I'll let him tell it. It involves an avatar change.

I was inspired to make Fire Watch the ogre. Or, perhaps it was inspiring to make Fire Watch the ogre. In any case, it is a done deal, partial payment for him insulting my home state of Idaho. The problem, I think, is when I get home from work he immediately crawls up into my lap and promptly falls asleep. But, by the time we want to go to sleep, he's refreshed and ready to play. Maybe I will try to play with him this afternoon and keep him awake.
When he DOES fall asleep with us, he'd melt your heart (yes, even cats-suck people). So, I'd much prefer his sleep pattern get adjusted than to ban him permanently at night.

my cat is 18 and she's banned from our room during sleeping hours for years. She has no issue walking across heads to get to the other side of the bed and then looks at you like there's something wrong with YOU when you brush her away......
OR she sits on the night stand and taps on your arm or head to get you to open the blind so she can sit in the window.
Neither is acceptable.

Neither is acceptable. Our older cat, up until the time we got the new "interloper," is perfectly happy to be curled up next to my husband for 6 hours or so. Then he will get up and come to ME to be let out (this usually at about 3 in the morning). I don't mind that too much, because I wake up, let him out, and go back to sleep. Which isn't as bad as continuous bouncing, play-fighting with hands or feet. We have to get SOME uninterrupted sleep!

But I'll take my time anywhere
Free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere
Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home
(And the earth becomes my throne)
And the earth becomes my throne
I adapt to the unknown
Under wandering stars I've grown
By myself but not alone
I ask no one
And my ties are severed clean
Less I have the more I gain
Off the beaten path I reign
Roamer, wanderer
Nomad, vagabond
Call me what you will
Yeah, you wi-i-i-ill
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
and I'll take my time anywhere
Anywhere I roam
Where I lay my head is home
heh-yeah
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind
And I'll take my time anywhere
Anywhere I may roam
Where I lay my head is home
That's right
But I'll take my time anywhere
I'm free to speak my mind anywhere
And I'll redefine anywhere
Anywhere I may roam
Where I lay my head is home
Carved upon my stone
My body lies, but still I roam,
Yeah yeah!
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam
Woah
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam
Yeah!
Wherever I may wander, wander, wander
Wherever I may roam
Yeah, yeah, wherever I may roam
Yeah, yeah, wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam
Wherever I may roam (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU9XrnF7mnc)

Morning Devotional
Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong. (Proverbs 24:3)
If You Want to Succeed - Prepare Well!
What happens when you're not well-prepared? Things you hope won't happen, do, and they occur with greater frequency than the things you hope will happen. The dividing line between winning and losing - is preparation! Tennis champion Arthur Ashe said, "The key to winning is self-confidence, and the key to self-confidence is preparation." Singing, "If you wish upon a star" won't make your dreams come true; you've got to prepare yourself.
Ever wonder what Jesus was doing during those pre-dawn risings and nights of prayer? Preparing! If you plan to keep growing, preparation must become a way of life. You must never stop asking, "Lord, what do You want me to do? What will it cost me in time, effort and resources? What obstacles must I overcome?" If you live with that mindset you'll be well on your way to fulfilling God's purpose for your life.
Asked how long it would take to bring his ship to a stop, the Queen Mary's captain replied, "A little over a mile." Then he added, "A good captain thinks at least a mile ahead." Your success in any venture is determined by how important it is to you, and your ability to prepare for it.
The Living Bible paraphrases it this way: "Any enterprise is built by wise planning, becomes strong through common sense, and profits wonderfully by keeping abreast of the facts." Alexander Hamilton, a founding father of the United States, said, "Men give me credit for genius, but all the genius I have lies in this: when I have a subject to hand, I study it profoundly." So, if you want to succeed - prepare well!

The only can of tobacco I've seen are the ones one of my brothers used to have in his pants pocket, which of course, was attached to his legs.

My daughter's friend's father opened the mailbox yesterday to find an official looking envelope that obviously contained some type of traffic citation. He went back into the house and called his daughter downstairs. He showed the envelope to his daughter. "We're going to open this one together," he told her. So they did.
It was a picture of the father's truck going through a red light.

Well, mine was left sitting on the table it normally doesn't sit on because I was watching Schindler's List last night and laying on the couch...I fell asleep, woke up it was still there....Went to bed, woke up around 7 came in here and it was gone...kids say they didn't move it...wife says she didn't move it, but I know that's where it was...I've searched all around, under the couch, under the chair, under the table and it's disappeared...it's a mystery.

It will be interesting to see where it turns up. In our house the missing always turns up in younger daughter's bedroom. I once found fifteen pairs (no exaggeration) of scissors up there--all of which at fifteen different times she swore she did not have and that she had looked "all over" for them. It doesn't have to be scissors. If I left the car parked out front and it turned up missing, I'd simply go back into the house, walk upstairs, and there it would be in youngest daughter's room. Under the bed. Of course, one would have to shovel out all the other junk before one could find the bed, but that's another story.

the incredible missing scissors are second only to the amazing vanishing tape. You buy these items and put them where they belong. Family members who insist they are innocent know where to find said items and take them. They disappear into a worm hole (or a daughter's room........or a son's room........) never to be seen again.
So, you buy another of said item and amazingly, the same thing happens again.
Hence, 15 pairs of scissors and probably 3 dozen rolls of tape.

That is so sad, Hadassah. I remember running through sprinklers, wading pools, chasing each other with hoses, squirt guns, water balloons and the like. I remember spending entire afternoons up in a tree; the tree sometimes being a pirate ship, a rocketship, or even a fort. Sometimes branches would become horses and it was time for cowboys and Indians; there was always a war going on somewhere. We had croquet, badminton, and of course baseball and basketball.

Maybe fun at school with playmates?
I'm trying to decide what was the most fun I had at school with classmates. I wouldn't say it was fun, exactly, more like memorable. Everyone knew I didn't lie--but there came a day three boys desperately needed me to tell a lie. They had about thirty minutes to teach me. The kicker was that they needed me to lie to a priest.
