I do understand that compared to God, I am zilch. I don't understand how that makes me undeserving of love.

We had guests last night and I had to go.

The wages of sin are death. We have all sinned and come short of the glory of God. We deserve death...I am preaching to the choir, I know. This I believe is what Vir and CID were saying also. We have accepted Christ and our debt is paid. You don't deserve love from God but our given it by his grace. That is the heavenly concept, from an earthly one...we are to love one another and yes...now you deserve love from your fellow man.

In my years of teaching, I've only run into one, perhaps two, students who seemed to exude evil. Other than speaking to them quietly, or stepping between them and other students, I left them alone.

From these experiences I understand the concept, "The wages of sin is death." One cannot love the dead.

By contrast, the love of God has such purity and is so uplifting, there is no taint of being undeserving--there is just awe, and a pure wish back that I could love like that--because everyone is deserving of that kind of love. We are a special people, we children of God.

It seems we may be using 'deserved' in two different ways. Vir spoke of doing work and therefore deserving pay. That's not how I would use the word 'deserving.' If I do work for an agreed upon wage, then I am owed. If I did a very fine job, I may be deserving of praise--but that does not mean I am owed praise. I can be deserving of something and yet never receive an ounce of it.

I know others are finding this discussion with me very frustrating, and I definitely do not mean to be frustrating. I am having an interesting time with it; I'm having fun.

And yes, I know, People. Isn't that just like me to be having all the fun while driving the rest of you nuts. If we ever get together, I picture a long line of people standing in line, waiting to throttle me. I'd probably have fun with that, too--but then, in that instance, so would all of you.

Eh, I am not going to read through what everyone has already said, I'll just put forth my thoughts.

If God set rules in black and white and said, "Stray from these rules and you shall die" then, if you broke the rules, what happens?

You die!

So, let's say God did that, and I broke a rule. God loves me and doesn't want me to die. He knows I didn't INTEND to break the rule, so even though I deserve (as in: That is the standard punishment) death, he knows I am sorry, so he gives me grace. He does NOT give me what I DESERVE (punishment), he suspends my sentence because he knows that I learned from what I did wrong and don't plan to do it again.

For those not getting Meri's point (hopefully I'm getting it right):

God loves me. He made promises to me and as long as I am making every effort to follow him, he will keep his promises. He gives me what I deserve (from his promises) in the cup that overflows.

In fact, I am not being obdurate. What I am doing is having a fun, interesting, thoughtful, and mystifying time trying to see what others are describing. However, it seems to me others are just finding it frustrating.

For me, it is finding the second view in the same picture--the same kind of perceptual illusion I love finding in this picture. What do you see most easily? The young woman or the old crone?

Where people are having trouble with me is that I am saying people, intrinsically, deserve/are worthy of love.

Perhaps what has not been said is that in my mind it follows that people are working hard at being the best they can be, and at striving to be perfect even as our Father is perfect.

I am not saying we deserve love even though we are sinners. I am saying there is something at the core of each person that makes us deserving/worthy of love. The core that is us, with sin removed.

Hi there sluggards. I have got all the morning chores out of the way have been planting coleus and getting ready to stick a couple tomato plants into hanging bags that are supposed to be fab for them.

Then it is time to finish researching my History of Western Civilization Mid-Term and write up an award winning paper on the Glories of Ancient Greece. (Quit preening Constantine.)

I like it when I have energy to get up and do stuff on Saturday morning.

We all know the worst of ourselves, the darkest parts that no one else sees and we all know that they are there and they exist within us.

It was something that my husband and I had to work very hard to overcome in our marriage, that basic knowledge of "You love me even though I am NOT worthy...that is why the love is UNconditional."

If you are saying, "God created us without sin. What God creates is good. Good things are godly and thus, we are worthy of love (outside of our sin) because God created us." That I get. I think it is our sin that we are aware of within us that gets in the way of the idea that we ARE worthy of love BECAUSE God created us to be (outside of our sin).

I think I am coming somewhat closer in understanding.

Because we are God's creation, I see people as being worthy of love even though they are not perfect. I see us being able to grow in ways of perfection--and that the love of others nurtures this growth. Definitely, God's love nurtures us.

Morning Devotional

The God of all comfort. (2 Corinthians 1:3 )

God Will Bring You Through

God can bring you through situations you think you won't survive, or feel you'll be stuck in forever. He can make you comfortable in the most uncomfortable places, and give you peace in the midst of trauma. Before your life is over you'll live, love, and experience loss. Losing some things will actually help you to appreciate the things you still have. It's the taste of failure that makes success sweet. You'll live each day not knowing what tomorrow holds, but confident that God has your tomorrows all planned out. They're not in the hands of your boss or your banker or your mate or anybody else. Nor are they in your own hands to manipulate and control. No, all your tomorrows are in God's hands.

Just because you don't recognize the path you're on doesn't mean that God's not leading you. He promises, "I will lead them in paths they have not known. I will make darkness light before them, and crooked places straight. These things I will do for them, and not forsake them" (Isa 42:16 NKJV). So get to know God - you'll need Him. And He'll be there for you. He'll be there when everybody and everything else has failed you. He'll be there for you in the dark places. "Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning" (Ps 30:5 NKJV). However long the night, morning always comes, and with it His joy. As you look back you'll realize that His grace protected you, provided for you, secured you, calmed you, comforted you and brought you through. Times and seasons change, but not God. He's always "the God of all comfort."

I don't think of it in terms of people being stubborn. I see it as people working to get their points understood and working to understand others.

Do you actually feel stubborn?

I once had an interesting conversation with my sister about being stubborn. You've got to take this with a grain of salt because she claims before she was born her wish was to be the most stubborn person in the world. Someone, she says, misunderstood, and thought she said wanted to live with the most stubborn person in the world--and that's how we became sisters.

We were doing something together, and I thought she was being a little grouchy was all. Finally she said, "You didn't even notice I was being stubborn, did you?"

Me: "Huh?"

Her: "Were you being stubborn?"

Me: "No."

Her: "You didn't feel it, did you? You didn't feel yourself being stubborn."

Me: "What are you talking about?"

Her: "You are so stubborn you don't even have to work at it, you don't even notice it. I can feel when I'm being stubborn."

So, Terri, can you feel yourself being stubborn? I tried to tell my sister since I couldn't feel it, it must mean I am not at all stubborn, but she walked off in a huff.

How is it decided how members or participants of a group will be identified? I've always wondered if there are rules to that.

Forumites or forumers? Is it just the way they sound? It certainly sounds better to call residents of my hometown "Santa Paulans" rather than "Santa Paulites." But are residents of Washington called "Washingtonians" or "Washingtoners" or "Washingtonites"? Are there Tallahassans or Tallahassians or Tallahaseers?

We're good. We got invited to a Celebrate Recovery BBQ today, just got back. Plenty of BBQ Chicken and hotdogs...sweet tea and lemonade...no beer, since we were in mixed company (translate Baptists)...games and stuff for the kids, folks sitting around picking guitar<<this is where I was. :)

Would have stayed longer but Emily decided it would be fun to play in an ant bed, so we had to come on home and doctor her.

But are residents of Washington called "Washingtonians" or "Washingtoners" or "Washingtonites"? Are there Tallahassans or Tallahassians or Tallahaseers?
Interesting topic of discussion, I would imagine it's all in how it sounds. My town is Anniston, we're Annistonians, while there are several Annistoners it kind of looks bad on the rest of us. ;)

How's your Saturday?

Playing beauty salon with the daughters. Both decided they needed haircuts. I'm also working on a P.E. award--I may need to go resupply the printer with ink. Next stocked up on scrub brushes and cleaning supplies. This house still needs a lot of scrubbing to make up for the licks and promises I've been giving it all school year.

Boy, can I commisserate with Emily. Those ants can be on you fast. Does she have a lot of itchy bites?

Yet we are told in Genesis, that after God created man, He looked at everything He had made and found it very good. We are told our sins are forgiven. We are told we are the salt of the Earth, and the light of the light of the world.

Note, I am not saying we make ourselves good. I am saying God made us good, He forgives us, He redeems us. We work at becoming perfect as our Father is perfect.

Yes, God is real love, there is no question of that.

RayMan and I were talking about this earlier in a PM. Not being able to hold a grudge is not necessarily always a positive thing. The same attitude (or whatever it is) that prevents me from holding a grudge is most likely the same thing that prevents me from holding people as accountable as I probably should.

On my most recent trip to England, I went with a friend. Now, this friend looks EXACTLY the same as she did in high school (okay, so her skin has a few more wrinkles)...She is still very trim and slim. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to keep up with her.

Believe it or not, I discovered I was in better shape. We would be walking all around London (or Liverpool) and I'd still be going and she would say, "Okay, I have to rest for a few minutes!" I sat and rested more on this trip than any of my other trips! *L*

Let patience have its perfect work. (James 1:3)

Be Open to Change - and Pursue It!

A letter was returned to the Post Office. Handwritten on the envelope were the words, "He's dead." Through an oversight the letter was inadvertently sent to the same address again. Again it was returned to the Post Office with yet another message: "He's still dead!" Let's be honest; most of us resist change. We desire improvement, but we don't want to pay the price for it. And that's a problem, because we will never become what God intends us to be by remaining what we are. It's not enough to be open to change, we need to pursue it.

If you're serious about changing your life, Dr. John Maxwell says: "Don't just change enough to get away from your problems - change enough to solve them. Don't change your circumstances to improve your life - change yourself to improve your circumstances. Don't do the same old things expecting different results - get different results by doing something new. Don't see change as something hurtful that must be done - see it as something helpful that can be done. Don't avoid paying the immediate price tag of change - if you do, you will pay the ultimate price of never improving."

James writes: "When your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing" (Jas 1:3-4).

Character building is a slow process; it happens day-by-day. Whenever we try to escape life's difficulties we short-circuit the process, delay our growth, and end up with a worse kind of pain - the worthless type that accompanies denial and avoidance. So, be open to change - and pursue it!

Some people are willful in their ignorance.

My mother's ethics book from nursing school in the 50's (Catholic hospital version) calls it, "Invincible ignorance". I love that term. In essence, fact can be presented and despite fact, the individual continues to believe errantly.

I often say, "thank God breathing is a natural reflex or some people would be too stupid to inhale", to which my husband said, "no, that's wrong, you shouldn't want that because if they were too stupid that whole natural selection thing would happen and we'd be a lot better off". Can't argue with that.

1726 People's revolt due to increase in gin/brandy tax
1818 General Andrew Jackson captures Pensacola FL
1830 "Mary Had A Little Lamb" is written
1844 Samual Morse taps out "What hath God wrought" (1st telegraph message)
1866 Berkeley CA named (for George Berkeley, Bishop of Cloyne)
1883 Brooklyn Bridge opened by President Arthur & Governor Cleveland
1902 Cleveland's Bill Bradley is First in American League to hit a homerun in four consecutive games--not duplicated until Babe Ruth does it June 25, 1918
1918 Cleveland beats Yankees 3-2 in 19 inning
1929 Detroit Tigers beats Chicago White Sox, 6-5, in 21 innings
1964 Beatles' 3rd appearance on Ed Sullivan

I didn't know Mary Had a Little Lamb was a nursery rhyme with an American origin. It was written after Mary Sawyer, at the suggestion of her brother, took her pet lamb to school.

No, it's nothing sinister. I was very small when we went to see Bambi. I had the Little Golden Book at home, so I knew how it was all going to play out. I had already discovered the great thing about stories is that they could all start over again where everyone was still alive. When I was a little older, if I didn't like the ending, I'd simply write out one that I did like. I'm the eternal optimist.

Kind of. I knew what a story was. It was make believe. If the story was make believe, then the death was make believe--which made everything all right. However, the ending had to fit the story. Ever read a story that ended in death just because the author was too lazy to write a proper ending? Those were the endings I used to rewrite, until the death did make sense, or the story ended better another way.

Ah, Vir, do you cry over books and movies?

I remember once reading a Forward to a Stephen King book where he said something to the effect if someone could read a horror story, at night, while all alone, and then sleep easily, they had no imagination. I could do all of that easily because my imagination could find solutions to the horror his imagination conjured up.
