First I've heard that one, too. My great-grandfather would have loved it.
I'm trying to remember one that we used to giggle over in junior high school. Maybe someone can help me out with the parts I've forgotten.
There once was a farmer
Who took a young miss
In back of his barn
Where he gave her a...
Lecture on horses and eggs
And told her she had
Such beautiful...
Manners for a girl of her charms
And that he'd like to take her
in his...
Washing and ironing
And then if she did
They could get married
and raise lots of...
Sweet violetsThere's a few like that. You'd probably like the shaving cream song.

Oh I stuck my head in the little skunk's hole
And the little skunk said, "Well, bless my soul.
Take it out! Take it out! Take it out!
Remove it!"
Well I didn't take it out.
And the little skunk said,
"If you don't take it out,
You'll wish you had!
Take it out! Take it out! Take it out!"
P.U. I removed it!

And of course, the most random song ever...
Peepin' through the knothole on grandpa's wooden leg.
Oh' who'll wind the clock when I am gone?
Go get the ax, there's a flea in Lizzy's ear.
And a boy's best friend is his mother.
I fell from a window, a second story window.
Oh why'd they build the shore so near the ocean?
Who cut the sleaves out of dear old daddy's vest,
And dug up Fido's bones to build the sewer?
A horsey stood around, with his feet upon the ground.
Oh, who'll wind the clock when I am gone?
Go get the ax, there's a fly in Lizzy's ear,
And a boy's best friend is his mother.

April 12th, 2009, 12:14 am
Now that this thread has had fifteen thousand problem-free posts, I have been given permission to have the following discussion. There is a ruling against political discussion in the Religion Forum because political discussion has its own forum. However, it is recognized that during fellowship, historical/political discussion may become a part of fellowshipping, as we kick different subjects and ideas around in this more relaxed atmosphere.
The question is do we want to allow political/historical subjects to be allowed in here as viable topics for fellowshipping? If the majority of us who regularly post here do, I can then ask Fire Watch to relax the rule for this thread.
While Fire Watch is allowing this discussion, he warns allowing such topics into this thread may change it from being a trouble free thread. It is his feeling such discussions would change the tone of this thread and we would begin to see some of the same issues that trouble other threads. Therefore, his own recommendation is against us trying it—the thread is doing quite well as is.
So, the first vote has been cast. What say the rest of you? (As official vote taker, I’m not voting one way or the other. I’m fading back into my well remembered role of unbiased reporter.)

I will not change my work hours and I'm not shelling out a whole bunch of money for a babysitter for my son while he's at dad's new place. I may help out with paying the babysitter, but helping out is it. My son needs me and my life to be as stable as possible. This divorce and finding out his baby sister isn't his sister is going to devastate my son, he doesn't need my life being screwed up to add to the mix of pain that is going to be in his life. We've had historical political figures come up, and nothing good really came of it. *cough* 16th President *cough* We've also had nothing come of it... like when I mentioned that my son was doing a report on Jefferson. From a Christian perspective, I believe that our ability to witness is gravely compromised every time we open our fat mouths about current "political" events. Some topics we have to take that risk, but they are few and they are biblically based.

What we do here IS fellowship. Should fellowship encompass a broader range of topics than is currently permitted?
In other words, fellowship of any (reasonable) topic would be permitted. Non-fellowship of any (reasonable) topic is not encouraged in this thread and never has been. We have wonderful debate forums for that. But this is fellowship.

What is 'non-fellowship'? :eh:
This is how I look at it. There are a lot of great topics out there in the Land of Many Threads. I join those threads because the topic draws me in--it doesn't even matter who the people are. Here in this place, it is not the topic, but the people who draw me in. I enjoy talking with you guys about anything you wish to talk about. If you come in really happy (or really mad) about something your state's governor just did, and wish to share, I'm all in favor of that.
If I come in because I was really excited about a history lesson I happened to be teaching that day (or really disgruntled), I"m in favor of talking about what's on my mind.
Sure, both discussions might turn political for a bit, until someone comes in and announces they are going hunting or biking--but it's all part of the partying and relaxation that goes on here.
My thoughts and expectations are even IF Fire Watch decides to approve a trial here, we are not going to see much of a change--indeed, if any at all. We'll probably say, "Hey, that's cool--now tell us what song you're listening to these days." Then we'll go on talking about family, friends, and jobs. But every so often the news, history, and politics might be passing topics.
Non-fellowship is people coming in who don't really want to be with people--they just want their say because the topic between friends just happens to cover politics.

As far as a a "trial period...."
This entire thread is a trial period. If the Religion Forum rules are further relaxed for this thread, that loosening will also forever be "trial." The "trial" might last one hour--or for three years and one day--or for the life of the thread.
Each one of you sees this place and each other slightly differently than the next. Each sees who comes here, how we act, and the overall mood of this thread. Based on your own thoughts and visions, each of you will have a great opinion on whether we and this thread can be better served--or not--by expanding our types of discussion.
The pending decision will not be the direct result of any vote. Fire Watch will make the decision, just as he made the decision to allow this thread into existence...just as he made the decision to allow this discussion to take place.
As you all may have noticed, Fire Watch lets me play, but he also has me reined. Right now he's letting me play. Ultimately, he has control of the rein.

I can't think of a reason not to discuss politics/historical subjects in this thread, where a lot of subjects are discussed. Some of the other threads in this forum touch on these subjects occasionally and they don't get heated or derailed.

3 are firmly against the rule being suspended for this thread.
8 believe the rule might be somewhat relaxed--but vary as to how much.
3 are in favor of suspending the rule for this thread.
Some have yet to respond. Even if the remaining should respond in favor of suspending the rule, the tally would show that the majority would still favor some kind of restriction.
My question was whether we should lift the restriction, not change the restriction. Therefore, even though I (and the statistics) can make an excellent argument that the majority are against the current restriction, I cannot make the argument that everyone wants the restriction lifted.

No where did I say it was hard to bake bread. It is however very difficult to match the skill, talent, and experience of those fine Italian master bakers who have spent generations honing the skill. I'm proud to spend money there helping to make the American dream real for them. They came here looking for opportunity and made the most of it. That's an outlook on life that I admire.

The rest of the world writes rules for California to make this face at: :eh:
If Californians waited for cold weather to enjoy chili, we'd get to have it 3 times a year. Chili is good on it's own, but it is also an excellent side dish to a BBQ'ed steak!

Anyone who owns and operates their own business has my admiration, too. Great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mother, father all made bread in my family--and now I'm teaching daughters to do the same. At one time, my family was so large that my mom would scrub out the steel washtub we used to bathe the newest baby because she didn't have bowls large enough to hold all the bread dough needed. Bathing babies and breadmaking--forever linked in family lore.

That is what freezers are for. We keep plenty of meat in the freezer year round, so I can usually persuade my wife to cook up some homemade chili (usually with deer meat) most anytime of the year...though I must admit she doesn't require nearly as much arm twisting on the cold miserable winter days.

Good morning Meriweather. You get up so early. I hope you get enough sleep.

Well yes and no. The rule specifically covers non-discussion of politcal figures/candidates (or things that are mostly of a political nature) in the Religion Forum. Some overlap is to be expected.
I remember not too long ago perusing the threads here in RF and it struck me how many of our RF threads at that time were about evolution, politics, and atheism. Yes, a few of these threads were relocated by Mods, but mostly we self-corrected, and within a few days the threads were once more focused on religion.
I tend towards thinking that focus is the key. If we focus on not having certain kinds of threads here in the Religion Forum, that is different than focusing on threads of a religious nature. Each one of us can and should choose the threads that promote religious discussion. We can submit threads that are focused on religion.
