Morning Devotional

Whenever the Lord assigns us a difficult task, He gives us what we need to carry it out. John Wesley wrote, “Among the many difficulties of our early ministry, my brother Charles often said, ‘If the Lord would give me wings, I’d fly.’ I used to answer, ‘If God bids me fly, I will trust Him for the wings.’”

Today’s Scripture tells us that Joshua was thrust into a position of great responsibility. No doubt the enormity of the challenge before him made him tremble with fear. How could he ever follow such a great leader as Moses? In his own strength it would be impossible to lead the people into the Promised Land. But along with the marching orders, the Lord gave him an assuring promise: “I will not leave you nor forsake you” (Josh. 1:5). Then He said, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (v.9). Such reassurances were the backing Joshua needed.

If God has given you some special work to do that frightens you, it’s your responsibility to jump at it. It’s up to the Lord to see you through. As you faithfully do your part, He will do His part.

Look for me in springtime
as raindrops fill the air...
In the splendor of the rainbow,
you'll find my presence there.

You will find me in the fragrance
of April's sweet perfume;
Drifting through the clover,
on a sultry day in June.

An August day will find me
upon the summer breeze...
On the distant sound of the thunder,
in the gently swaying trees.

In the golden fields of harvest,
is where I can be found;
As autumn time approaches
and leaves comes tumbling down.

In the wintertime when days are short
and chill is in the air...
Just look into a moonlit night,
you'll find me lingering there.

When the setting sun has gone away
and shadows fill the night;
When the cloak of darkness lifts its veil,
I'll be your morning light.

So when you feel discouraged,
get on your knees and pray;
You'll feel me there beside you...
I'm just a breath away.

Take heart, RayMan.

Growing up, I was surrounded by babies and toddlers learning to speak. Little ones can only manage some of the sounds in some of the words. From these sounds, one must be able to garner meaning. I had so much practice, translating baby talk was one thing at which I came to excel.

Yogi's manner of speaking patterns follow this same pattern. He leaves out many of the sounds (words) to what he means. Thus, If you can't imitate him, don't copy him, is easily translated into: "If imitating the techniques he uses does not give you the results he gets, then don't copy him."

My guess is that Yogi always thought at a much greater speed than which he could speak.

Morning Devotional

Through wisdom a house is built. (Proverbs 24:3)

Succeeding at Home

Building a good relationship at home is like building a wall: It's done brick by brick. And the mortar that holds it together is unconditional, un-condemning, unselfish love. The only way you'll know how good a job you've done is when it's tested by the storms of life. One of the most important keys to succeeding at home is - communication. So:

(1) Become creative. Spend time together as a family. Call your mate during the day and try to meet sometimes for lunch. Drive your kids to school or soccer practice so you can talk to them. Communication can happen anywhere, but it won't happen unless you make it a priority.

(2) Identify communication killers. Internet, cell phones and TV are the chief culprits. The average couple spends less than one hour a week in meaningful communication; they spend five times more each day watching television. This is a "screen test" you'll have to pass if you want to succeed at home.

(3) Encourage every member to speak their mind. And when they do, don't criticize or retaliate. Differences of opinion are healthy. Handled right, they can make things better.

(4) Be conscious of how you interact with your family. You may have unwittingly adopted a style that stifles communication. Stop and consider; do you: (a) retaliate - that has a degrading effect; (b) dominate - that has an intimidating effect; (c) isolate - that has a frustrating effect. (d) cooperate - that has an encouraging effect.

If you're in the habit of using any communication style other than a cooperative one, start working immediately to change it. You'll have to, if you want to build a good relationship with your family.

I am thinking that breathing through one's nose is a thing to enjoy and appreciate. In fact, today, it has been a great luxury. I have not taken breathing for granted even once today.

I've had this viral infection the past two-three weeks, and for two solid weeks my nose was of absolutely no use. It is also very hard to talk and breathe at the same time when one does not have use of one's nose. Today, for the first time in a long time, I could talk and breathe at the same time. It was wonderful.

I declare this, Appreciate Your Nose Day. I'll bet the rest of you haven't thought of your nose even once today. Give it a pat. It does a good job for you.

How are you doing today, Noelle?

Hadassah
April 3rd, 2009, 8:59 pm
ah, the nose is a wonderful thing when it comes to breathing. When you breathe in air through your nose, the air is filtered, heated, and moistened before it enters the trachea. If the air wasn't filtered by the cilia in the nose, we'd get all kinds of chemicals, dust and dirt, viruses, and bacteria in our lungs.

noelle12
April 3rd, 2009, 9:25 pm
How are you doing today, Noelle?

I can't complain. I'm doing pretty well.

My most difficult time is definitely in the morning because my hubby is NOT a morning person, and my daughter tends to wake up fairly late, so my poor hubby has to do a LOT in not much time, and I can't help. It's really frustrating. It is much better when someone is here (like my MIL) who can take care of my daughter when she is ready to wake up, and my hubby only has to get himself ready.

During the day my daughter is usually in the care of someone else, and not in my home, so I just lay around. I actually made my (unborn) baby a little hat. A friend brought me a thingy and taught me how to do it. I'm not really crafty, so this was a major accomplishment.

Evenings are not bad. My hubby takes care of my daughter and me. Often someone from church brings dinner. Fortunately my daughter goes to bed really well most of the time, so that makes it a little easier on my hubby.

I'm scheduled to see my doctor every week. My next appointment is Monday, and each Monday for a while. They told me I'll be on bed rest until 36 weeks (a mere 7˝ more weeks), but as time goes on they may loosen some of my restrictions. Right now I am pretty much restricted to bed only.

ah, the nose is a wonderful thing when it comes to breathing. When you breathe in air through your nose, the air is filtered, heated, and moistened before it enters the trachea. If the air wasn't filtered by the cilia in the nose, we'd get all kinds of chemicals, dust and dirt, viruses, and bacteria in our lungs.

Aren't you the romantic.

Morning Devotional

If there is anything praiseworthy-meditate on these things. (Philippians 4:8)

Find Something to Praise God For

General Robbie Risner described the seven years he spent as a prisoner of war as "the essence of despair." He said, "If you could have squeezed the feeling out of the word despair, it would have come out lead-colored, dingy and dirty."

What's amazing is how he survived. He pried the cover off a floor drain in his cell and lowered his head into the opening. There he noticed a solitary blade of grass, the only smidgeon of color in his colorless world. Calling it a blood transfusion for the soul, Risner began each day in prayer, lying on the floor of his cell with his head down the vent, focused on that single blade of grass.

Jesus said, "Your eye...provides light for your body. When your eye is good, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness" (Mt 6:22-23).What are you looking at? Each day you get to decide where you'll focus. And you won't have to look hard to find things to complain about: war, gas prices, the economy, global warming, and crime.

God gave Adam and Eve everything they needed in the Garden of Eden, but they chose to focus on the one thing they couldn't have. He divided the Red Sea, sent signs to guide the Israelites in the wilderness and provided food so they'd never go hungry. Initially, "They... sang his praise. But...soon forgot what he had done" (Ps 106:12-13).

Don't be like that. The Bible says, "If there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things." Surely you can find something to praise God for today!

Religion Forum Post of the Week

We do a good job here in the Religion Forum with launching threads that begin good debates. What we have less of are threads that launch us into quiet, reflective waters. Such threads softly drift off the front page all too quickly. I know the following one touched a group of us--including RayMan and me.

It is human nature to not truly listen to another with concentration, 100% focus. The mind usually wanders to response, reflection, or a simple desire that they speak in specifics and quit rambling on. Listening is, unfortunately, an art. The bottom line is that most rarely hear what is actually said.

The above is related to a physical conversation where you not only hear but also see those speaking to you. An ideal time conducive to acknowledgment (listening) of statements made.

But, what about non-physical conversation? A time when concentration and focus are paramount?

Some say God does not answer. But then.... how well do they listen?

interestingly, I had this conversation with my daughter the other day. She was praying for her sweetie. she said, "I haven't heard God answering, so I'm just gonna keep on praying". Has anyone ever had days where they look at all the things they've accomplished and realize that no one would ever know how much they've done because there's so much they haven't done? *sigh*

Well, got 4 loads of laundry done, the stairs swept (again, did it last night to), and the dishes put away. Got a shower in and now, I'm off to work. Ta-ta, y'all!

After that, I have to get groceries, put them away, and get about 5 hours of sleep before I get up for work tomorrow morning.

So at my father's birthday party last week, his friend tried to convert me, again. (This is a longstanding tradition every time we get together. I'm used to it, now.) This time, I happened to have a Hebrew/English Tanach in my car, as I came straight from work. I showed it to him... he said it was wrong because it didn't have Genesis in it. I told him that Beresheet WAS Genesis, just the Hebrew name for that book. He said he couldn't find it. I had to explain to him that since Hebrew goes right to left, the books are backwards.

Cops murdered in California and Pittsburgh. Parents murdering their children. People going on rampages and murdering others before killing themselves. Wars, floods, tornadoes, earthquakes. And so much other pain, man-made or otherwise. And then there's the pain and suffering our friends and family, as well as we ourselves, go through. How do we pray? It seems as if it would take hours and we don't know when the next disaster is going to strike, or when the next psycho is going to use his (or her) assault rifle on others.

Hadassah, when things are at their worst, we must be at our best.

The financial mess appears to be in the psyche of many people and manifesting itself in these horrendous crimes. I have not seen an example quite like these that we have witnessed this past week in my lifetime. Use your influence with the Lord Jesus in your heart, to settle things down around you and use your gifts to fix what ever you can.

In this darkness, the smallest of light can be seen more clearly by all.

Oh Lord God, so much pain..........

remember the Bible says 'these are the beginning of woes' and that things would be like birth pangs. which means things will be speeding up and getting worse. Jesus said we should pray that we can withstand the time of the trial. Maybe our prayer should be,

Dear Lord, things are getting worse and worse at a faster and faster pace. I have no idea how to pray or who to pray for, so I'm praying for everyone, that we may be able to withstand the time of the trial.
As it says in the psalm, "be with me Lord, when I am in trouble, be with me Lord, I pray." I ask your help and protection for myself and all your creation. Be with us Lord and protect us. See us through this. We ask this in the glorious name of your son, Jesus. Amen.

Oh Lord God, so much pain..........

In times like these, the thought which stabilizes me is, The question is not IF we will suffer, but HOW will we suffer.

Suffering is not only that which is personal, but also family, community, nation, world. One of the things I address in prayer each day is how I will suffer. I like it because it present a picture of stepping up to the plate instead of running and hiding under the bed (which is the picture if conjures up for me).

Using the word how, also focuses me on the way I will handle suffering, and of course, that conjures up Christ handling suffering. He remained silent. He comforted and encouraged others. He accepted help. He laid down his life. The he arose again.

One caveat about silence: It's one thing to remain silent through a trial that only lasts a short part of the day--and quite another thing to remain silent for days on end. I discovered people who do not need to whine--but they do need to vent. There is a balance to remaining quiet.

Morning Devotional

I have stilled and quieted my soul. (Psalm 131:2)

Having a Peaceful State of Mind

One of the greatest stress inducers we face daily is noise. We live in a noisy world. To enjoy a more peaceful atmosphere - we must create one! So find a place where you won't be interrupted and learn to enjoy simply being quiet for a while. If you're a high-energy, time-conscious, results-oriented individual with too much to do and not enough time to do it, you'll discover this is not easy. And before you start thinking, "This is not very spiritual," take a moment and consider these four Scriptures:

(1) "The fruit of righteousness will be peace; the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever" (Isa 32:17).

(2) "Better one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind" (Ecc 4:6).

(3) "Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business" (1Th 4:11).

(4) "Be still, and know that I am God" (Ps 46:10). You can't live a continually noisy life and expect to walk in peace.

Jesus made sure He had seasons of peace and time alone. Nobody had a greater life's purpose or more incessant demands placed upon Him than He did. Yet the Bible says, He "often withdrew to lonely places and prayed" (Lk 5:16). Surely if Jesus needed this type of lifestyle, you do too. Spending quiet time with God is essential to restoring your body, your mind and your emotions. The truth is, you need it regularly, so insist on having it and don't let anyone take it from you. Work your schedule around God - don't try to work God in around your schedule.

We're not going to discuss Sir Francis Bacon? I suppose that's another subject that qualifies as politcal discussion and not allowed here?

"Sir Francis Bacon (later Lord Verulam and the Viscount St. Albans) was an English lawyer, statesman, essayist, historian, intellectual reformer, philosopher, and champion of modern science. Early in his career he claimed “all knowledge as his province” and afterwards dedicated himself to a wholesale revaluation and re-structuring of traditional learning. To take the place of the established tradition (a miscellany of Scholasticism, humanism, and natural magic), he proposed an entirely new system based on empirical and inductive principles and the active development of new arts and inventions, a system whose ultimate goal would be the production of practical knowledge for “the use and benefit of men” and the relief of the human condition."
