Morning Devotional

You are the salt of the earth. (Matthew 5:13)

What are You Called to Do? (3)

Observe:

(1) Your calling is often connected to what troubles you deeply. For Moses it was the oppression of his people. So God used that, and called Moses to lead his people to freedom. For William Wilberforce it was slavery. He devoted his entire life to seeing it eradicated in England, which it finally was shortly before his death.

For Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. it was the injustice of a society that enslaved and oppressed African-Americans. So he dreamed and he preached and he marched and he organized and he boycotted, and the Civil Rights Movement was galvanized.

If you want to discover your calling, begin praying about what troubles you deeply. Usually we try to avoid unpleasantness, but if you have a sense that your calling involves helping the poor, spend time around those in poverty. Allow your heart to be moved, carry within you the conviction that things must change, and keep praying, "Lord, make me a change agent."

(2) Your calling means God believes in you. When Jesus called His disciples they didn't look like winners. Generally, in their day if someone was going to be the follower of a rabbi it happened much earlier. Plus, rabbis didn't recruit, they took applications.

But not Jesus. He picked a doctor, a tax collector and fishermen and said, "I believe in you. What I know I will teach you." He promised, "He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also" (Jn 14:12). No wonder they left their nets! Jesus empowered His followers to go out to live as He lived. Today, that's what He is calling you to do.

Look for me in springtime
as raindrops fill the air...
In the splendor of the rainbow,
you'll find my presence there.

You will find me in the fragrance
of April's sweet perfume;
Drifting through the clover,
on a sultry day in June.

An August day will find me
upon the summer breeze...
On the distant sound of the thunder,
in the gently swaying trees.

In the golden fields of harvest,
is where I can be found;
As autumn time approaches
and leaves comes tumbling down.

In the wintertime when days are short
and chill is in the air...
Just look into a moonlit night,
you'll find me lingering there.

When the setting sun has gone away
and shadows fill the night;
When the cloak of darkness lifts its veil,
I'll be your morning light.

So when you feel discouraged,
get on your knees and pray;
You'll feel me there beside you...
I'm just a breath away.

A good thought, Sketch, but it gets complicated in any number of ways. There are those of us who have developed a fierce loyalty to the Religion Forum and are protective both of it, its members--and perhaps especially--it's Moderators.

There are any number of tools that we can use. We can try to resolve the issue in the thread itself. Sometimes this works well. But I can also recall a time last Fall, I tried to facilitate this--and the issue, as small as it was, continued to fester. Had I advised instead that it be taken immediately to TTTM, it would have been dealt with much more swiftly and efficiently--and probably would have resulted in less hard feelings all around.

Another time I was involved in a series of deliberately light-hearted, off-topic posts MEANT to bring civility and good nature back into various threads--but the intentions of those of us involved were TOO good. We had a Moderator come storming in, asking what we thought we were doing taking so many threads off topic.

Thicker skin--check; Problem solving within the thread--check; Bringing in (short-term) humor--check; Asking for Moderator assistance--check and double check. This last is often the most efficient, but it is not the only tool in the toolbox. Thanks for reminding us all.

Religion Forum Post of the Week

While that's true, it's also true that we each come to understand mathematics, child psychology, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Batman in our own way.

If you believe God is real, and actually exists, not just in our own minds as some sort of psychosis or coping mechanism of sorts, then the reality about him is some specific reality. Our beliefs and mental capacity as human beings notwithstanding, facts are. God is.

I believe he is real and has thoughts, a way to show himself to man if he so chooses, and that he has the wisdom and capacity to do whatever it is in his interest to do. I do not believe that God is just an idea beyond our comprehension.

Jesus answered..."It is also written..." (Matthew 4:7)

Knowing What "Is Also Written"

After the blessing comes the battle! And Jesus was no exception. Following His baptism "the Spirit sent him out into the desert" (Mk 1:12), and after fasting forty days He was hungry. That's when Satan showed up and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread" (Mt 4:3).

You can count on the enemy to show up at your most vulnerable moments. And when he does you'd better know what the Word of God actually says - not just selected snippets and quotes you've heard second or third hand. "All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching ...in righteousness" (2Ti 3:16).

We pick the parts of Scripture that fit our lifestyle and bolster our theology, but when the enemy manipulates God's Word and uses it against you, you need to be able to say, "It is also written." You need to know what else God has to say. The Bible says Satan "will speak against the Most High...oppress his saints and try to change...times and ...laws" (Dan 7:25). Satan knows the Word of God is "a double-edged sword" (Heb 4:12), but he'll still try to engage you in a swordfight!

But "Jesus answered...'It is also written: Do not put...God to the test.'" He knew what His Father had actually said, and refused to allow Satan to dictate His responses, including what He should eat. Whose menu are you eating from today? Are you like the prodigal, settling for pig-swill while your Father has a feast prepared for you? Tell Satan, "Get thee behind me" (Mt 16:23), and stop letting him bamboozle you with lies and half-truths! Get into God's Word and get it into you!

I say yes - BUT, we could easily manage without help if the government did not require (despite all evidence of its futility) she be "educated" until she is 18. We are trying to avoid picking Uncle Sam's pockets, but his rules may not allow us. :wall:

Any thoughts?
Are you picking Uncle Sam's pockets or is he picking yours?

You pay taxes right? I rather see gubmint aid going to people who are truly deserving of it rather than those who are too frickin' lazy to get off their butts and work.

Sometimes one should accept the gift that is offered--even when one can afford to go out and purchase the same gift for herself.

There is a saying: Have you had a kindness shown? Then pass it on! Let it travel down the years; let it wipe another's tears...

I would accept this kindness and then go work further kindnesses of your own.

A few years ago, right after my kids were born, I was only making about $11 an hour, and my wife couldn't work because even if she did we wouldn't have been able to afford daycare....we had to get food stamps...I felt humiliated that we had to depend on the gubmint, it went against everything I believe in...

One night I was talking with my dad, who was the most conservative person I've ever met....He made Limbaugh look like Barny Fwank...And he said, "Son you and I are paying for welfare, and I have no problem with tax dollars going to you...You need it, you're an honest man doing the best you can to raise your family."

Ever since then I've looked at welfare differently...it's not evil, it's just been abused...stricter welfare laws are what we need, not complete abolishment.

At this point, in this society, it is a resource available to you. To not use the services available would be a waste of those services and a disservice to your daugther. The best thing to do is something; the worst thing is to do nothing. What I am best at doing are the things that need to be done--but no one else is there (or is willing) to do them.

When I ask God to make me an instrument of his will, I'm going to assume He wants me working at something, not at doing nothing.

Unless, that is, it takes work to do nothing; then that's usually what He wants done for that specific case.

i don't agree at all with your first statement. Quite frequently, if you do nothing, something takes care of itself. Often, if you do something, you actually impede the correct outcome of something, prolonging the problem (ie, FDR and the depression or our current 'methods of fixing our crisis' in our current government) sometimes, it is good to remember that medical saying "first do no harm".

We may be talking parallels. At home, it's a matter of someone taking responsibility. At work, it is often a matter of someone saying, "We need someone who can handle this."

Trust me, in the job force, Substitute Teacher comes after trash collector and dog catcher. Substitute Teacher at the middle school level is lowest of all.

It's not as if I enter into a situation at the highest level--it is always at servant (even slave) level. I have a talent for having fun in the midst of drudgery. It's also at that low level where one can become most cognizant of what is going wrong--and what can be done to correct it.

In short, what I am sometimes very good at is making very bad situations a great deal better. It just seems odd that you seem to advising me to turn down jobs because someone else might be even better at it. By the time they get to me, all the "better" people have said, "No thanks."

Not having enough problems of my own, I decided to go and search out a few national problems with possible solutions. I liked this one best:

For all of you who are concerned about President Obama's stimulus package, send this to the Prez.

Dear Mr. President:

There's about 40 million people over 50 in the work force; Pay them $1 million apiece severance with stipulations:

1) They leave their jobs. Forty million job openings - Unemployment fixed.
2) They buy NEW American cars. Forty million cars ordered - Auto Industry fixed.
3) They either buy a house or pay off their mortgage - Housing Crisis fixed.

It is so simple and easy to do -- Only 40 million, not trillions.

It will solve the nation's problems.

that's a good one meri..........like the guy who the movie Pursuit of Happyness was based on said...he is financing a study to see what would happen if the gov't gave a million dollars to every legal resident of the US who is over 18 and registered to vote.

I calculate it would be about 200M, maybe 250M people.
if you figure the census is around 450M and subtract kids and non-voters. it's still less than the 15 trillion they're lookin' at.

imagine what we could do.

Zero doesnt exist.

For b = 0, the equation bx = a can be rewritten as 0x = a or simply 0 = a. Thus, in this case, the equation bx = a has no solution if a is not equal to 0, and has any x as a solution if a equals 0. In either case, there is no unique value, so http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/7/c/9/7c942fcac9e188ac272196e849975656.png is undefined. Conversely, in a field, the expression http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/7/c/9/7c942fcac9e188ac272196e849975656.png is always defined if b is not equal to zero.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/d/a/8/da80309294cbb21942e1768973178bad.png hence:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/8/c/b/8cb82fb503208f3cb7cf9cc11a4280bd.png Dividing by x − x gives:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/3/c/8/3c877f1fbdbccf3276d7431319bb2a62.png and dividing by x gives:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/math/c/4/c/c4c9b852c938da096b69fc257a7a8d82.png The "proof" above requires the use of the distributive law. However, this requirement introduces an asymmetry between the two operations in that multiplication distributes over addition, but not the other way around. Thus, the multiplicative identity element, 1, has an additive inverse, −1, but the additive identity element, 0, does not have a multiplicative inverse.

1865 - The Secret Service Division was created on July 5, 1865 in Washington, D.C., to suppress counterfeit currency. Chief William P. Wood was sworn in by Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch.

1867 - Secret Service responsibilities were broadened to include "detecting persons perpetrating frauds against the government." This appropriation resulted in investigations into the Ku Klux Klan, non-conforming distillers, smugglers, mail robbers, land frauds, and a number of other infractions against the federal laws.

OK, now that is freaky.

It was freaky, but I saved telling the last part until morning. Vir and RayMan who witnessed the final exchange between Fire Watch and me last night will laugh and say it served me right. (The symbolism is pretty good.)

I assumed I had died of a heart attack (runs in the family), but the first thing I noted was that I had a good heart. So on I went. I got to the stomach and my stomach had been trying to absorb something that had caused a blockage, resulting in my death. It was a black keyboard button--and it read "Ban."

"A good heart didn't save me from eating a ban," I thought and woke up.

One thing (perhaps the only thing) that strikes true terror into the heart of Meri is that image of the finger on the ban button. I should probably print it out and tape it to my computer monitor as a reminder to perhaps take a step or two back from that line. Or Fire Watch can make it my avatar when he's seriously annoyed with me. Of course, that would mean that he was admitting to being the more serious of the two of us...

Morning Devotional

He saved others; himself he cannot save. (Matthew 27:42)

He Chose to Save You!

When the pastor introduced the visiting speaker, an elderly preacher walked to the pulpit and told this story: "A father, his son, and his son's friend were sailing off the Pacific coast when a storm overturned their boat sweeping all of them into the ocean. Grabbing a rescue line, in a split second the father had to make the most excruciating decision of his life - which boy to throw the other end to and which one to sacrifice. He knew his son had accepted Christ and his friend hadn't. Anguished, the father yelled, 'I love you son,' and threw the rope to his son's friend. By the time he'd pulled the boy back to the capsized boat his son had disappeared beneath the waves. His body was never recovered. The father knew his son would step into eternity with Jesus and couldn't bear the thought of his friend facing eternity without Christ."

At the end of the service a teenage boy approached the old man and said, "That's a nice story, but what father in his right mind would sacrifice his son's life in hopes that the other boy would become a Christian?" "You've got the point," the old preacher replied, "It's not realistic. But I'm standing here today to tell you that story gives me a glimpse into what it must have been like for God to sacrifice His only Son for us. You see...I was that father, and your pastor was my son's friend."

Those who watched Christ die said, "He saved others; himself he cannot save." And they were right; He couldn't do both, so He chose to save you.

"How many of you want to be in seventh grade next year?"

All of them did.

Vir, here is a math challenge for you (or anyone else interested).

I just saw this thread and the Trinity thead one right after the other. Make up and solve a math problem that will calculate the day the Trinity Thread and the Gathering Place thread will have the same number of posts. If you want extra credit, include the time of day both will be equal.

Add one more leg to that problem and you'll have a Trifecta.

How many threads will lie between the Gathering Place and Trinity threads at the time the two become equal?

Will that do?

Depends on whether vir's basic attitude towards math has changed or not.
