It is worth the read because it is so much more than what is seen on stage. I am not an emotional person but I was crying through the end of the book for the characters and I was enraged at Hugo for what I thought was going to be a miserable ending...

However, the reason I was able to get through the book was because I first listened to the abridged (5 hours) version on Audible. It compelled me to put the effort into the whole book because I really wanted to know the whole story.

I'll have to give it another go. I have the abridged version. I like the idea of listening to it as an audiobook. It is my absolute favorite stage production ever.

Why can't it just stand as burgular?Because it's incorrect. It's burglar. It's like a little-kid version of the word. It reminds me of Jagular instead of Jaguar.

Toe socks. For some reason it reminds me of a day last summer when the family was together and barefoot--and we spent a half-hour or so comparing toes. Fascinating to discover how many different kinds of toes there were, and who shared the same type.

(Most people in my family are like me and can't drink, so we have to find something to do to entertain ourselves!)

I love how you and your family analyze each other ... I'm not making fun of you, I'm being sincere. Some families take each other for granted or spend so little time honestly noticing one another.

so who has toes similar to yours?

I want a professional picture of our family some day - blue jeans, white tees and bare feet...

I have a great bridal portrait of my daughter....hair all done; make up perfect, wedding dress on....and she's slumped into a chair kicking up her bare feet. :)

I'll change from feet to hands. My dad had big beautiful hands. I have his hands. I always say I have big hands for a woman. Not abnormally big or anything, I do wear a size 5 wedding band, but for a woman I have long fingers and very deep nail beds. My dad had the same hands only hopefully mine are a bit more feminine. Anyway...the day my son was born, the very first time I held him and took hold of his little hand, I said, "He's got my dad's hands"....and he does. Nice, big strong hands...long fingers and very deep nail beds.

I've seen it done where the host comes in from time-to-time and makes a single observation. That's all there is until the next time, but people could then discuss that post/observation.

If there was ever a problem with that, I never saw it. People saw it as the honor that it indeed was, and made an even greater effort to be respectful.

People will rise to the occasion, but unfortunately, as you point out, there is no guarantee.

I was the oldest girl. I spent a lot of time taking care of/playing with my brothers and sisters (except my older brother). Great times, and I enjoyed it all. However, when one is around people that much, there is time one needs to be alone. The best place to be alone, to be where no one could find me (or at least get to me) was in tree tops. I learned to climb much higher than anyone else, so of course I earned the label, "Tomboy." Tomboy, I decided, was just another name for oldest sister desperate to be alone for awhile.

People frown on mothers climbing trees to get away from their children.

A boy and a girl would have been nice. However, I can't decide which of my daughters I'd trade in. Sometimes neither; sometimes both!

Did your son end up looking like his father and your daughter like you? How old are they now? Both mine, although they do not look too much alike, more closely resemble my husband than they do me.

I am coming up on the anniversary of my give a damn being busted three years ago. (My brother asked me not to be a part of his life and I obliged him because I hated the pain of riding his roller coaster promises.)

But my parents visited for Dead Turkey Day and when he called to speak to them he asked to speak to me also. Our conversation went like this:

Big Bro: We need to talk more often.
Me: I'd like that. Or email, since you are so busy.
Big Bro: I'll do that, I'll write when we get home from New York.

Of course, life went on and no notes or phone calls came. And then I did something that totally betrays my busted give a damn mode - I bought Christmas presents for his family. I was so excited to do this, to try and open the door. Well, today a gift came from him and I am afraid of getting back into the obligatory gift swap (I hate obligatory gifts, they are not true gifts) where the depth of our relationship devolves into sending Barnes and Noble gift cards.

So I want to do more, but I am weary of getting my sister soul crushed again. I've cried too much. [Maybe I should shut off REM...] :shifty:

Any suggestions from people more sensitive than myself?

First of all, I LOVE Barnes & Noble gift cards! Has our relationship devolved to that point yet?

Second of all, the trick to Christmas presents is to keep eyes and ears open during the earlier part of the year for something someone might enjoy. Get it then. Wrap it, put a name on it, and half the time, by Christmas it will be a surprise to you, too.

Third, don't be afraid to put your heart on the line. If it gets crushed, God will rebuild it into a something bigger, stronger, faster and a million times better than what it was before. When you give your heart, it is the other person's. If they break it, then it was theirs to break. However, it is my experience as people mature, they are more careful of the things they treasure.

Real women are not afraid to cry. I actually cried this past summer. After about twenty years, it felt great. Maybe I'll make it ten years this next time. Usually I find listening to sad songs is a good compromise. Speaking of which, how are you feeling after listening to your melancholy song the other night?

I don't know what to say or to add after reading Meri's advice....
but I do know that roller coaster emotions get very old and take a toll on a person. I also know that it's really hard to actually bust that "give a damn" when it comes to family.
I've been on a ride like this with my mother for quite some time now....I will say when I quit "playing the game", she actually started being nicer to me. I would say I don't give a damn, but deep down, I know I do. On the surface though.....I just can't keep setting myself up to get knocked back down. But as I said, at least assuming a "don't give a damn" has made her a little bit nicer to me.....
I realize this doesn't help you though.

all great advice....
and I too LOVE barnes and noble gift cards.
my husband once tried to explain to me that there are these places called "libraries" where you can borrow books for free instead of of spending lots of money on buying the books....but I discovered they make you return the books. I didn't like that part of it at all.....

I got a Kindle! It is better than libraries or Barnes and Noble!!!

It is nice to know someone understands.

When my daughter was four he asked her to be flower girl at his wedding. She, being a girlie-girl, was so excited. When we arrived he barely acknowledged our existence - no being flower girl, not even a minute to talk.

I saw it in London four times - each time we were willing to pay higher prices for better seats. We'll take the children to the same theatre in a few years.

i've seen it here. at this venue, the loge is the best spot, both for the audio and visibility. If you sit above the orchestra you can see the specials.....like the swirling that's supposed to be the water when Javert 'jumps'...

I have to say, Who Am I, The Song of Angry Men and the duet with Valjean and Javert and Javert's suicide, were/ are probably my favorite pieces of music in the show. I love them all, but they are my favorites.

oh, how sad for your daughter....
and the thing is, it's one thing to hurt me; it's another thing altogether to hurt my child.
that's kind of when I quit playing my mother's game. She hurt my children...especially my daughter.
I told her that I let her hurt me long enough but there was no way I'd allow her to do the same to my daughter.
I do feel bad for my mother, b/c she is such a sad soul....but how do you help someone who will not help themself?

I'll change from feet to hands. My dad had big beautiful hands. I have his hands. I always say I have big hands for a woman. Not abnormally big or anything, I do wear a size 5 wedding band, but for a woman I have long fingers and very deep nail beds. My dad had the same hands only hopefully mine are a bit more feminine. Anyway...the day my son was born, the very first time I held him and took hold of his little hand, I said, "He's got my dad's hands"....and he does. Nice, big strong hands...long fingers and very deep nail beds.

a person who wears a size 5 wedding bad does NOT have big hands. you might have long fingers but you do not have big hands. I have big hands. short fingers but big hands.

do you play piano? those sound like piano playing hands.

I have relative pitch, my husband and two of my kids have perfect pitch... and my middle child tries. She plays piano rather well, though.

I have good pitch memory. I would love perfect pitch, it would make so much less complicated. I just do the best i can. the voice is there, the sight reading is iffy, but perfect pitch would be swell.

Had you mailed the gifts already? Was this a spontaneous gift by him or a 'send a gift cuz i got a gift' gift?

He called though, so he's making a step. Just do a little at a time....no need to throw yourself in headfirst, just a dip of the toe and a wade to the ankles.

To quote 'What about Bob?' ......baby steps...

I'm ignoring it--any ankle of mine needs to man up if it wants me to lay claim to it. It's not that swollen. But if it causes any more blisters from rubbing against the shoe, I'm going to be most unhappy. The blisters hurt worse than the strain.

Morning Devotional

Be encouraging to others!

"Encourage and strengthen him." Deuteronomy 3:28

God knew that Joshua would need all the help he could get in leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. So He told his mentor, Moses, "Encourage and strengthen him, for he will lead this people across and will cause them to inherit the land" (v. 27-28). God recognized that Moses was the best man to strengthen and encourage Joshua because he'd dealt with pressures and "people problems" at the Red Sea, and again in the desert when Israel grumbled against God - and him.

Everybody needs encouragement, including you! You need others to cheer you on when you've been battered by setbacks and circumstances. German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe said, "Correction does much, but encouragement does much more." It rekindles your spirit and gives you the oomph to keep going. One well known pastor wrote, "Nothing can uplift more than the encouragement of a friend or loved one. It's the oxygen of the soul. Having run two miles, a person may need to pause and catch his or her breath before running another two. Before facing a formidable task, or even the wearying routines of life, a person needs to pause for encouragement before tackling the work ahead. So become oxygen to the souls of those around you. Strengthen them to persevere for the Kingdom. Encourage them with God's promise to work good in all things."

Stop and think about somebody who could use a little encouragement, and before today is over, make it a point to get in touch with them. "Let us pursue the things...by which one may edify [build up] another" (Ro 14:19 NKJV).

 for Terri for her cat. Losing a pet is hard.
Thanks, Mimiheart.

It was hard. And I am usually very practical and non-mushy about pets. I am not one to say "my pet is like one of my kids!".....but seeing them suffer, and losing them is still hard. I cried like a baby.

I should come to your house. Sounds delicious. Today's my birthday, so I'm trying to pass off as many responsibilities as I can to my husband. I spent the morning fixing (and eating) waffles and cleaning the kitchen. Then this afternoon we are spending the day with the extended family, going out for lunch, singing carols at a nursing home, reading the Christmas story from the Bible while the kids put on the nativity scene, then a gift exchange game. I'm as ready as I'm going to be.

Okay--crazy Target lady story.

Last time I went I got candles for the menorah. And the lady helping me find them said, "Merry Christmas" after getting them. I just smiled and said, "You too..." while laughing inside at the absurdity of it. (I'm not one who buys into the "war on Christmas" and this is why.)

Today I got some more Chanukah things while I was there... and the lady at the check out says to me when she saw them, "My friend is in Israel right now. She gets to be in Isreal when Jesus was born."

I'm very good at smiling and nodding. :D

I would love to be able to have my mother with me at Christmas. Last time was 40 years ago. :cry:My mother and I tolerate each other. Which is more than what we used to do. She loves the kids, and once she gets here I doubt I'll see them for the majority of the time. However, I'm also aware of the fact that my mother and I get along much better in different locations. We have about a week of being able to be with each other without trying to pull each other's hair out.

So I'm not so much excited as I am nervous. I hope everything will be fine, but I'm not going to hold my breath. At least she's not staying with me.

As an adult, I did not have my mother enough for us to get on one another's nerves. If I got on her nerves as a child, she never let on! *LOL*

Every year on Christmas Eve, I try to remember the eight reindeer, which brings to mind the seven dwarves. Each year I manage to remember six reindeer and six dwarves. This year I was thrilled that I remembered seven reindeer--until I realized I could only come up with five dwarves.

Here is who I have. Who am I missing?

He says too many people "combine" them....

As a matter of fact, we did that this year. Combined his birthday and Christmas gift....as well as his grandparents kicking in for his birthday. The gift he wanted was pretty expensive....he knew he wasn't going to get it UNLESS they were combined!

But I think what bothered him the most were that his friends combined the events. So other people in his circle of friends would get taken out for a night on the town for their birthdays, and then they would be part of the Christmas get-together...but with him they often seemed to make the Christmas get-together his birthday gathering, as well...He just wanted some its-all-about-me time, I think.

Hey! I'm in Phoenix. Have a Merry Christmas, Melinda.

I know that, Mimi...I've thought of you while I'm here.
I'm not sure where I am, hubby picked me up at the airport and drove me to the motel. It's close to the jobsite. It's not a fancy place, but it's fairly new so it is quite nice ... and vacant. We ate at a Ruby Tuesdays last night, and it was actually quite busy. They had been slow earlier, so they sent some of their workers home, and then the rush hit. So the service was a bit slow, but everyone was nice and patient and very Merry on their Christmas Eve.
Hubby's working 1/2 a day today, so I came to the business center to check things out, especially with Jeff and Mitchell.....

wow, Mimi...again you are a class act. A week before you pull each others' hair out? with my mom, it's usually just an afternoon...
although I will say, my mom is an absolutely wonderful, funny, lady. Everyone loves her and she loves everyone. It's just hard to be her daughter.

Ruby Tuesdays is pretty good. My mother's pulling in the driveway now... ttfn.

On the fifth night of Chanukah my children received:

Oldest: Clothes and "The Tales of Beedle the Bard"
Middle: Gelt, a PEZ dispenser and Dora Checkers
Youngest: Gelt, a PEZ dispenser and a Wall-E game that I will never be able to figure out

I got a HUGE bag of toasted marshmallow jelly beans, and my children have been swept away to the hotel with my mother for the night.

Mother got a picture of two dogs wrestling that I drew--and three kids.

Stepfather got a chocolate orange.

Happy fifth night of Chanukah, Mimi. I gave my 18-year-old The Tales of Beedle the Bard. She already finished it and now it's my turn to read it. It's been a good day, a little tiring, but a good kind of tired.

Yesterday, the doggie death watch was a bit hard; he did die yesterday evening--but by today, already, we were able to laugh at some of his old antics.

Good morning, Melinda. And your Christmas day?

my Christmas Day was wonderful....different than usual; but wonderful. My husband and I had the whole discussion about taking a bad situation and turning it into a good one. He had to be in Phoenix for work; wouldn't make it home for Christmas. I told him I would come to him for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
I had absolutely no problems traveling on Christmas Eve. I talked to a few others at the airports and this was not their stories. Many of them were quite aggravated at their Christmas travels; but thankfully, mine were uneventful. Husband and I had Christmas Eve dinner at Ruby Tuesdays. The restaurant was actually busy. Not full; but busy. The manager informed us that it had been empty earlier, so she sent home most of her workers, then the crowd came. She asked us to be please patient as the service would be slow. What I observed were many tables of very happy, very patient families. I witnessed one table with about 8 people who all prayed before their meal. It was not our normal Christmas Eve spent with family; but it was wonderful.
My husband kept telling me he had a surprise for me for Christmas Day. Looking back I cannot believe I did not catch on sooner.... he worked half a day and then came and picked me up from the motel. Drove me into downtown Phoenix. I was busy just being a passenger and observing my passing surroundings; I like to be surprised so I wasn't even attempting too much to figure it out. Just rolling with the flow.......when all of a sudden I saw it. And I snapped. My husband surprised me by taking me to the Suns/Spurs basketball game!!!! He knows I am in love with Steve Nash and living where we do we are surrounded by Spurs fans, but I still cling to the Suns and Steve ... I could not have been any more surprised or any happier.
again, had we been home with our family, it would never dawn on us to go to a basketball game on Christmas Day, but we had so much fun and it was a great game.

Meh. She got most of my year end bonus this year which also happens to be the majority of what my raise next year will be. She's welcome to go buy whatever the hell she wants. :)

See, I've played this game for the last decade and a half and I'm sick of it.

On receipt of gift
her "this isn't what I wanted, you don't know me, if you paid attention to me you'd know what I wanted bla bla bla bla bla (me feeling like an insensitive heel)"

This year I decided no more. I told her ahead of time what I was giving, she didn't object, she got what I promised. Merry Christmas.

The best part of Christmases that are different is that they stand out instead of one blending into the other. Those are nice, too, but so are the ones that stand out.

My Christmas was very nice. (Koushi, this is for you as well.) I did not get a present from my husband this year, not in the traditional sense. My computer went down a month or so ago, so at that time we got a new computer. I told him that's all I needed for birthday, Christmas, and through Mother's Day. He's very happy, and so am I.

Possible response: "Honey, you are a sweet mystery to me. There is something about you that interferes with my otherwise perfect mind-reading talents. And I do listen to you--but my memory is not as good as it ever was, so take pity on me. I but ask of thee a list, so great is my desire to please thee."

Morning Devotional

It just occurred to me I haven't seen CID today and we have not yet had our morning devotional. Today, It's All in the Family.

God is able to turn a curse into a blessing.

You're in the right family!

Face it, there are times in life when we wish we'd been born into a different family. George Burns quipped, "Happiness is having a large, caring, close-knit family - in another city!" All joking aside, the family you're in is no accident. God told Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you...before you were born I [set you apart for a special purpose]" (Jer 1:5 NKJV).
We tend to think of Jesus' family only in terms of His heavenly Father. But He had a human family too; one that didn't always understand Him. God used His family to mold Him and move Him towards His destiny, right down to where He would be born. "Joseph...went...to...Bethlehem ...because he was from the family of David...While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have the baby" (v. 4-6 NCV). Notice the words "the time came." There's no coincidence or confusion on God's calendar. He plans our lives right down to the minutest detail. He says, "What I have planned, that will I do" (Isa 46:11 NIV). Jesus likely became a carpenter because that was Joseph's trade. And because of His obligations as the oldest son, He probably waited till he was thirty to begin public ministry. "What does all this mean to me?" you ask. Simply put: God will use your family to prepare you for the assignment He's given you in life. He placed you there to shape you and make you more like Him - hopefully through godly role models and loving relationships. But even when you're born into a dysfunctional, emotionally-distant family, He can still turn a curse into a blessing (See Dt 23:5). So, trust Him!

And let us also pray for all those who are traveling today. As always, our prayers continue for Mitchell.

yes, How was your Christmas Meri? Your the asker, so now we're asking back.

I've been posting bits and pieces on here. It's been a very good Christmas, kind of ongoing, as we'll be having another family gathering tomorrow.

To sum up, Christmas Eve was a little unusual in the fact my husband has been working out of town and didn't get home until very late--but he was here for Christmas! Meanwhile, a dog I periodically take care of was dying, so Christmas Eve was more or less watching and waiting. The dog died in the early evening. As sad as that was, by morning we were able to start laughing a little about what a character that dog had been. During his life, he had bitten everyone who had anything to do with him--except me. We were trying to decide why I had not been worthy of a bite--whether I'm either too tough to bite, or maybe just not as tasty as everyone else.

My Christas gift was a computer we got in November after my old computer said, "Enough! Not doing this any more!" and presented me with the Blue Screen of Death.

We were all home for Christmas, and all was very well.

yike

lol koushi........you listen with 'man ears'. lol, my husband does that.
i TOLD you what i wanted. "when", when i said "i want ______ ". OR .....THIS is really nice.....

women would like to think that when you like something, the person who is supposed to care about you pays attention to what you like.

I stopped taking pop quizes when I left high school.

If she's going to pop a test on me to see if I love her or not, she's going to be very dissapointed in the results.

"But that's so impersonal. If you KNEW me you'd KNOW what I want without me having to tell you. This just prooves that you don't ever pay attention to anything I ever say."

Get the impression I might have suggested just that? ;)

koushi........... it sounds much like my husband and I.

He doesn't pay attention and he doesn't listen. He doesn't watch and he doesn't usually try.

After years of dealing with it, it gets tiresome when you TRY to do something for your husband that you know he'll appreciate and he does, because you paid attention to what he said he wanted only to have your husband not do the same thing.

over the course of the months she's probably said, "i love blah blah blah" or "i'd really like" or "it would be so nice" and it's fallen on deaf ears.

it gets disheartening and after a while women get ****y about it. it hurts to know what you care about is unimportant to the person who is supposed to care about you most.

I finally didn't have kids to wake me up, so the neighbors dog started barking at 6:30 and hasn't stopped. *cry*
