With only 90 days until the Daytona 500, who will win in 2009? (This is the "regular season" poll - to clear up an issue from last year; the "chase" poll will be created after the 26th race like it has been the last two years, and will be for the final championship.)

Jimmie Johnson (4 in a row, beating Cale)
Carl Edwards
Greg Biffle
Kevin Harvick
Clint Bowyer
Jeff Burton
Jeff Gordon
Denny Hamlin
Stewart, Kyle B, Kenseth, Junior (please specify)
someone else (please specify)

Sorry, I'm slipping in my old age - I should have had this poll up yesterday. :(

Yeah, I forgot :D

Okay, it's a tough call - I thought Junior was going to win last year (i.e., the one ending yesterday) and was hoping Jeff would win - but I'm going to bow to the inevitable and pick Jimmie Johnson again.

With the way that crew is working together, that's just the advantage you need to pick up maybe two or three places per race - and over a 26-race regular season, that's about 250 points.

And I really don't see them slowing down any time soon.

Just like usual - the first 8 finishers in the Chase get their own spot; the next four get lumped together, and the last spot is "everybody else".

Kind of wish they'd give us at least 13 options in the polls

You could do it by teams... and ask respondents to identify which driver on that team.

Then we'd just have two poll options:

Hendrick
Everyone else

In fact, we could probably disable that second option and not make any difference

I mean the last three years as the winner out on the track. I think each of the last two years HERE, he only got one vote!

(lots of us smacking our heads on that one...)

I would love to predict Jimmie for 2009, but four in a row? Man! That is long odds.

I'm still thinking... maybe Jr... maybe Kyle... probably Edwards.

I want Jeff or Junior to win... but Jimmie's got the best crew in the sport, and that's a BIG plus.

The poll is not about who you want to win; it is about who you think will win. Last year I thought Kyle Busch would win; I certainly did not want him to win. In 2009 I would like Mark Martin to win, but I doubt very much that he will. At this time I am still leaning toward Edwards... but have not entered my choice yet.

which is why I picked Jimmie.

Not if you've already won the first three. And then, it could be an indicator of some kind of advantage (driver, team, vehicle, etc.), which would be an indicator of a BETTER chance than everyone else.

Odds of tossing "heads" 4 times in a row: 1 in 16.
Odds of tossing "heads" 4 times in a row, having already tossed 3 of them: 1 in 2.
And if the coin has some kind of weighting bias, it could be better than 1 in 2.

Hey everyone, the 2009 poll closes 15 February - get your picks in now!

You are right... the chance of winning this season is the same regardless whether he won the last three or not, but still... three-peats are extraordinarily rare in professional sports and four-peats are virtually unknown.

I made my choice... Carl Edwards.

... and I notice you were clear this time about this prediction being only for the pre-season.

I have Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin in my Fantasy NASCAR league, so I'm prepared to kick some fanny.

Oh yeah, that's right!

1 Jeff Gordon 459 Leader
2 Clint Bowyer 441 -18
3 Matt Kenseth 419 -40
4 Greg Biffle 419 -40
5 David Reutimann 408 -51
6 Kyle Busch 405 -54
7 Kurt Busch 393 -66
8 Tony Stewart 379 -80
9 Carl Edwards 377 -82
10 Bobby Labonte 360 -99
11 Kevin Harvick 351 -108
12 Michael Waltrip 346 -113

I feel sorry for the guy in last place in my fantasy league. He has Kenseth on his team, but left him on the bench the first two races. I offered Kahne up in trade for him, and I'll bet he wish he took it, since he declined the trade and instead, put Kenseth into his lineup for Race 3.

But Yours Truly has moved up to 2nd

Not necessarily... he picked up four places in the standings today and besides, it was only the fifth race of the season. There are twenty more races to go; plenty of time for anyone to win the pre-season.

Actually, 21... and it's the "regular season". (I thought we agreed that the Bud Pole and the Twins were the "pre-season"!) :D

If Gordon is doing this well WITHOUT winning - what's it going to be like when he STARTS winning?

I pick him to get four wins this year.

Yeah... 21. I noticed my mistake after posting and didn't figure anyone would care. ;)

Yes... the way he is running he certainly could win four, but there are a lot of other guys running well too... like the Busch brothers, the always dangerous JJ and Edwards, and even a couple of the not so glamorous guys like Boyer and Reutimann. Hamlin is strong so far too.

I wish I did as good in the poll here as I did in my fantasy league... because I **benched** Kasey Kahne... and he came in fifth... and it was the RIGHT move!

My other drivers are Jeff Gordon and Denny Hamlin!

With 10 races left in the "regular season", anyone who is more than 1595 points behind 12th (1610, minus 15 for the fact that 12th and 13th are so close that anyone who is 1596 points back can't pass BOTH of them) has officially been eliminated from the Chase.

At this early date, that includes anyone 46th and below, such as Travis Kvapil and Jeremy Mayfield.

But expect that number to go up quickly!

Realistically, anyone more than 600 points is pretty much done, without a WHOLE bunch of luck - so say 34th (Robby Gordon) on back.

And while none of the ones up front are perfectly "safe", I'll just venture an opinion that Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, and possibly Jimmie Johnson are pretty much assured of being there come the playoffs.
