In my rear view mirror the sun is going down
sinking behind bridges in the road
and I think of all the good things
that we have left undone
and I suffer premonitions
confirm suspicions
of the holocaust to come
the wire that holds the cork
that keeps the anger in
gives way
and suddenly it's day again
the sun is in the east
even though the day is done
two suns in the sunset
hmmmmmmmmm
could be the human race is run
like the moment when the brakes lock
and you slide towards the big truck
you stretch the frozen moments with your fear
and you'll never hear their voices
and you'll never see their faces
you have no recourse to the law anymore
and as the windshield melts
my tears evaporate
leaving only charcoal to defend
finally I understand
the feelings of the few
ashes and diamonds
foe and friend
we were all equal in the end
Incredibly powerful lyrics.
Waters may be a jerk, but he can write like few others.

I'm sorry to hear that.
Although Waters is waaaaaaay to the left of me, and his songs are sometimes irritating in their assumptions, they almost always present a good look at the human psyche. The Wall just blew me away....
In a slightly odd twist, although I can appreciate early Floyd, I don't particularly care for it. The same can be said for the last albums; the best work that the band (really, Waters) did was from Dark Side of the Moon (quite possibly the greatest rock album ever) to The Final Cut.
Just my take... :)

One of my favorites.... The Final Cut
Through the fish-eyed lens of tear stained eyes
I can barely define the shape of this moment in time
And far from flying high in clear blue skies
I'm spiraling down to the hole in the ground where I hide.
If you negotiate the minefield in the drive
And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
And if you make it past the shotgun in the hall,
Dial the combination, open the priesthole
And if I'm in I'll tell you what's behind the wall.
There's a kid who had a big hallucination
Making love to girls in magazines.
He wonders if you're sleeping with your new found faith.
Could anybody love him
Or is it just a crazy dream?
And if I show you my dark side
Will you still hold me tonight?
And if I open my heart to you
And show you my weak side
What would you do?
Would you sell your story to Rolling Stone?
Would you take the children away
And leave me alone?
And smile in reassurance
As you whisper down the phone?
Would you send me packing?
Or would you take me home?
Thought I oughta bare my naked feelings,
Thought I oughta tear the curtain down.
I held the blade in trembling hands
Prepared to make it but just then the phone rang
I never had the nerve to make the final cut.
"Hello? Listen, I think I've got it. Okay, listen its a HaHa!"

I hear something from Animals on occassion, usually late at night, from the Final Cut, only on my CD player.
I wish my vcr wasn't broken, I'd love to put in The Wall now. I just love the animation in it, although "crude" by todays standards. I love the way they meld the images.
Used to go see it (and The Song Remains the Same & Rocky Horror) almost every weekend at Midnight Madness when I was younger... do they still do that?

Not wanting to repeat myself, but I do believe Pink Floyd is the greatest band of all time. When I was young, music like this was forbidden, but the likes of Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings (which I still listen to) were encouraged. There is nothing better than creating the ambience, obtaining a suitable intoxicant, and jamming to your favorite album. Wish You Were Here and the Dark Side are good, The Wall, even being overplayed is another good one. Thanks for listening ya'all. Jam on.

Day after day, love turns grey
Like the skin of a dying man.
Night after night, we pretend its all right
But I have grown older and
You have grown colder and
Nothing is very much fun any more.
And I can feel one of my turns coming on.
I feel cold as a razor blade,
Tight as a tourniquet,
Dry as a funeral drum.
Roger Waters may have been a dill-rod, but an absolute genius with lyrics.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but youre older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the english way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought Id something more to say
Home, home again
I like to be here when I can
And when I come home cold and tired
Its good to warm my bones beside the fire
Far away across the field
The tolling of the iron bell
Calls the faithful to their knees
To hear the softly spoken magic spells.

The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land
Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky:
A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers,
But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking
He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
He's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, it's not enough
His blood has frozen & curdled with fright
His knees have trembled & given way in the night
His hand has weakened at the moment of truth
His step has faltered
One world, one soul
Time pass, the river rolls
.........
And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
And silent replies that swirl invitation
Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
A grim intimation of what is to be
There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder that words,
Of promises broken....Given what happened last Tuesday, I think this is probably the most appropriate Floyd song.
I have every song ever recorded by them including the original demo sent out when Sid Barret first introduced them. They sounded like the frakken Beatles in the demo.

Went to see them in Vancouver BC a number of years ago, Me and a number of friends piled into a van and drove a number of hours...partying the whole time, arrived the nite before the concert and just found a park to stay in. when we woke the next morning we all piled out of the van and staggered our way down to the beach wondering why so many people were staring at us......turns out we were parked in the part of the park where the gay people hang out! Concert though was fantastic!! division bell tour

Reminds me of our forays to the Texas Jam in the mid - late 80s, except the part about the park.... One year, a couple of us went on a beer run and ended up getting busted up by some creeps and landed at the charity hospital in Dallas.

I got elastic bands keepin my shoes on.
Got those swollen hand blues.
Got thirteen channels of **** on the T.V. to choose from.
I've got electric light.
And I've got second sight.
And amazing powers of observation.
And that is how I know
When I try to get through
On the telephone to you
There'll be nobody home

The last line is like a baseball bat to the head...
not nearly as much as these:
Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way
Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but its sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over, thought I'd something more to say

I've always loved that song, so lyrical yet so real.
But while I feel it, it doesn't hit me the same way as the last lines of "Nobody Home"... so simple, yet set up to be so powerful.

lol…
Pink Floyd has always been an excellent accompaniment for any number of activities…
My favorite:
Back in the mid-70’s
me and my sweet lady (who was to become my first wife)
favored the music of Pink Floyd (among others)
for those exquisite times
during which we, she and I, thoroughly enjoyed each other in every possible manner
in the most insatiable and yet unhurried way
(with sessions lasting all night, or all morning, or all afternoon…
or sometimes, on the weekend, all three… :shifty:)
as we embraced in the timeless dance of love
and hungrily devoured each other…
The ethereal dreaminess of some of the tunes
was perfect for the mood,
accentuated by patchouli oil, Gonish incense, and gentle breezes blowing through our tiny cottage
(as well as the occasional mind-altering substance ;))…
and the tempo of some of the tunes was perfect for... well… you know…
BTW, I'm fairly certain that "Obscured By Clouds" and "Dark Side Of The Moon" were on the turntable
when we conceived our first child...
who, BTW, will be celebrating his 32rd birthday next month.
